Shazam! opens to around a $55 million box office opening weekend when the Saturday previews are factored into the equation. It’s a safe bet that those that saw it on the Saturday preview from a couple of weeks ago would have seen it this weekend, so Shazam! is off to a decent start.
Some industry estimates (Marvel fans?) actually had Shazam! coming in at a low estimated opening weekend of $40 million, so we see Shazam! absolutely crushes that. I’ve been saying that Shazam! would open to around $55 million all along, so I was right on the money.
The numbers for Shazam! include $3.3 million from the advanced Saturday screenings and around $20.5 million for Friday. The actuals will be in on Monday.
Update: It’s reported the opening is higher than expected with $56.7 million (including the Saturday preview).
Internationally sees the movie open to around $44 million, so the movie has almost made back its reported $100 million budget from its opening weekend alone. Update: Foreign gross is now at $102 million.
Over at Rotten Tomatoes, the flick stands at a 91% critics score, with 90% of the audience stating they liked it. Metacritic is at a 71, and the movie also received an “A” CinemaScore.
I have yet to post my review, but my own thoughts on Shazam! is that it is a fun and entertaining movie. It’s not my favorite DCEU movie by far, there are some definite issues with the film, but it’s a step in the right direction, and Zachary Levi makes a great new addition to the DC superhero lineup. I also go over the post-credit scenes here.
