Marvel and DC are voted among the biggest losers in Hollywood in 2023 which also includes Disney, diversity, Ezra Miller, Jonathan Majors, and more.
The Hollywood Report published its annual list of “Biggest Hollywood Winners and Losers” in 2023 “From Margot Robbie to Marvel.”
“A brutally honest rundown of who had the best and worst year in entertainment,” states the site.
Why are Marvel and DC losers?
Regarding Marvel and DC, it’s no surprise to learn both companies are losers this year. Both have had major bombs at the box office and fans haven’t been happy with Marvel and DC for quite a while.
Bombs from Marvel include Thor: Love and Thunder, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and especially The Marvels — the worst performing MCU and superhero movie of all time. Disney has now ended its theatrical run after only three weeks.
Likewise, with DC, bombs include Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle. It’s also not looking good for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the last of the DCEU movies. James Gunn is now rebooting the DCU starting with Superman: Legacy.
“It’s like this,” offers THR. “Marvel has been going to the same creative well for years, putting out increasingly convoluted stories, amid weakening special effects, and amid an increasing number of releases, in both theaters and TV, and you were expected to watch all of it just to understand what the heck is going on, and the studio seemed to think audiences would just keep showing up in droves despite all of this.”
What about Ezra Miller and Jonathan Majors?
Ezra Miller starred in The Flash, which I reviewed and said is absolutely atrocious. It just might be the worst superhero movie of all time. Miller has been in the hot seat with the law and is thought to be done as The Flash.
The same is for Marvel’s Jonathan Majors as his court case is currently taking place in NYC over allegedly physically assaulting a girlfriend. Majors is supposed to be the MCU’s next big bad with Kang the Conqueror. However, Quantumania completely backfired and rumors offer Marvel is moving away from Kang, which could mean Majors time in the MCU is winding down.
“Playing a major Marvel/DC character across a multitude of films is a Hollywood brass ring,” says THR why the actors are considered losers in 2023. “In addition to being an incredibly cool gig, you become downright iconic to millions of fans worldwide which, in turn, gives you a level of casting bankability for your career moving forward. Unless, of course, you end up blowing it.”
Disney is a loser because of Bob Iger
THR points to Disney being a loser because of Bob Iger.
The stock price is at its worst in six years, Disney+ isn’t doing all that well, and similar to Marvel, the Disney movies haven’t been doing all that well. The latest is Wish which just bombed at the box office. It’s also pointed out that Iger’s reaction to the strikes didn’t help things and that Star Wars hasn’t been doing all that great.
“Who wants to bet Bob Iger wishes he stayed retired?” questions the site.
Diversity fails
Regarding diversity, THR goes over a list of TV shows that have been canceled including Amazon’s A League of Their Own, ABC’s The Wonder Years reboot, Starz’ Blindspotting, Disney+’s Doogie Kamealoha M.D., Netflix’s Glamorous, Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q..
“Amid all the post-gold-rush belt-tightening at the studios, many titles embracing diverse actors and narratives got cut during 2022, and this continued into 2023,” they say.
