With Disney set to purchase Fox Studios next Spring, it’s apparently learned with that will come no more standalone Deadpool movies.
Willie Geist spoke with Ryan Reynolds on his Sunday TODAY show back in October and included a snippet in his latest interview with Hugh Jackman.
The interview with Hugh Jackman starts off with Willie Geist stating, “I interviewed your buddy, Ryan Reynolds, and he said, ‘There probably won’t be another standalone Deadpool movie,’ and then he stopped and he said…”
The Hugh Jackman interview then switches gears and shows a clip from the Reynolds interview, with Reynolds saying, “I continue to do full court press for Hugh Jackman to come back, to no avail as of yet… God knows he’s just been failing miserably since Wolverine…”
The Jackman interview then goes into talk of Wolverine and Jackman’s possible return to the role and a Deadpool team-up.
Regarding no more standalone Deadpool movies, the interview with Hugh Jackman doesn’t go into the subject, and unfortunately, the full interview with Ryan Reynolds from October from Sunday Today with Willie Geist isn’t available online in its entirety.
What’s interesting about Ryan Reynolds offering there will be no more standalone Deadpool movies is that back in July a reported Fox Studios leaker stated Disney is possibly retitling the third Deadpool movie, “Deadpool 3: X-Force.”
We can also speculate that subsequent Deadpool movies will possibly either be team up flicks with the Merc With A Mouth (such as Deadpool and Cable) and / or Deadpool movies will be used to introduce other characters paired with Ryan Reynolds.
Of course, it should be said we don’t know if no more standalone Deadpool movies is because of Disney’s influence or what Ryan Reynolds has had planned all along.
Disney CEO Bob Iger did confirm Deadpool can still be rated-R at Disney, which is in line with Reynolds’ original vision.
“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool,” Iger said back in December 2017. “As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”
