It’s been quite a day for Marvel Studios as they took Comic-Con by storm with all the announcements and trailers released.
Earlier in Hall H saw Marvel Studios reveal brand new concept art for the Captain Marvel movie as well as the villains and the timeline of the film.
Captain Marvel will actually be taking place in the 1990’s – prior to Iron Man – and will feature the Skrulls as the villains. The Skrulls are actually owned by both Marvel Studios and Fox Studios, similar to how Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were used. A while back saw Kevin Feige explain why the Skrulls weren’t used in the first Avengers movie, which was because Joss Whedon was already dealing with many characters in the movie and didn’t want to get into the shapeshifting aspect of the Skrulls. Using the Chitauri as the aliens in The Avengers kept things a lot more simple.
The good news is that Captain Marvel will use the Skrulls as the villains, which obviously means shapeshifting will play into the movie. Maybe it will be some sort of take on the Secret Invasion comic? Update: Kevin Feige has said the movie will adapt the Kree Skrull War.
Also the fact that Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s raises a lot of question in the MCU. For one: Why haven’t we heard of Captain Marvel? Also, since Captain Marvel is set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, did she age? Or did something happen to Captain Marvel? Maybe she’s been off planet for the past 20-30 years? Does Carol Danvers even age in the comics (serious question, I don’t know)? It will be interesting to see how everything fits. Update: Captain Marvel won’t appear in Avengers: Infinity War.
