Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination have released a new The Super Mario Galaxy Movie first look trailer, officially welcoming Yoshi into the sequel’s galaxy‑spanning adventure.
Titled as a “Yoshi First Look,” the footage confirms what fans have been expecting since the post‑credit tease of the 2023 film: Yoshi is no longer a tease, he’s part of the team.

Yoshi Joins the Adventure
The trailer highlights Yoshi as a full‑fledged companion rather than a background cameo. He’s shown racing across alien terrain, leaping between floating platforms, and charging into danger alongside Mario as the story expands far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.
The footage emphasizes movement, scale, and speed, reinforcing that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will lean heavily into the gameplay mechanics and visual identity of the Super Mario Galaxy games.
New Galaxies, Bigger Scope
As the tagline promises — “New galaxies. New friends.” — the trailer showcases multiple cosmic environments, each with its own look and physics.
Planets, star paths, and unfamiliar worlds suggest the sequel’s plot will revolve around traveling between galaxies rather than staying rooted in one central location.
This aligns with earlier marketing and teaser footage that positioned the sequel as a major escalation in scope compared to the first movie.
Returning Creative Team
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reunites much of the creative team behind the 2023 hit. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. Brian Tyler returns to compose the score.
Producers Chris Meledandri (Illumination) and Shigeru Miyamoto (Nintendo) are once again overseeing the project. Universal Pictures and Nintendo are co‑financing, with Universal handling worldwide theatrical distribution.
Release Date
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens exclusively in theaters on April 1, 2026.
The original Super Mario Bros. Movie earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest‑grossing animated films of all time. With Yoshi now officially in the spotlight, the sequel is clearly aiming to go even bigger.
