Disney Cancels Likely Woke Live-Action Robin Hood Following Remake Flops

Disney has quietly canceled its planned live-action Robin Hood remake, adding another project to the growing list of reboots and remakes that have stalled or been scrapped as the company reevaluates its strategy.

The project was first announced in 2020 as a Disney+ exclusive. It was being developed as a live-action and CGI hybrid inspired by the 1973 animated classic, with Raya and the Last Dragon co-director Carlos López Estrada attached to helm the film and Kari Granlund writing the screenplay. Reports at the time also described it as a musical.

Director Confirms The Project Is Dead

News of the cancellation came directly from Estrada during a recent Reddit AMA when a fan asked about the status of the movie.

“It’s dead sadly,” Estrada said, while adding that he believed the team had developed something special and original, particularly with the music. He also revealed he still thinks about making a similar project independently with different characters.

Disney has not publicly commented on why the project was shelved.

Another Disney Remake Bites The Dust

The cancellation follows a rough stretch for Disney’s remake machine. While earlier projects such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King generated massive box office numbers, more recent efforts have struggled to generate the same enthusiasm.

Disney’s live-action remake strategy has increasingly come under fire from fans who feel the new versions often fail to capture what made the animated originals popular in the first place. Other announced projects have also reportedly stalled, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, while the planned Aristocats remake was also dropped.

Would Robin Hood Have Gone The Same Route?

While Disney never revealed specific story details, the cancellation is already raising questions among fans about what direction the movie would have taken.

The company has faced repeated backlash in recent years over changes made to classic characters and stories in various remakes. With audiences increasingly rejecting what many view as unnecessary modernizations of beloved properties, Disney may have decided that Robin Hood simply wasn’t worth the risk.

Whatever the reason, the planned remake is no longer moving forward, leaving the 1973 animated version as Disney’s only take on the legendary outlaw of Sherwood Forest.
