The Booster Gold series is back in play.
DC Studios and HBO Max are reported to be officially moving ahead with the Booster Gold series.
Via Deadline, Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins is writing the pilot. It’s added that Jenkins is also expected to serve as showrunner if the series is picked up.
Update: Jenkins confirmed the news on Instagram: “It’s true y’all! I’m writing a pilot about this lovable goofball for @hbomax !! Honored to work for James Gunn and very happy to inherit this project from Danny McBride, two of my creative heroes.”
DC Studios Gives Booster a Boost
Originally announced by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran over two years ago as part of their DC Universe reboot, Booster Gold was pitched as a unique comedy-adventure about a fame-obsessed superhero from the future using basic technology to fake his way through the present.
But the project had been stuck in limbo. The show previously lost its initial showrunner (Gunn in December said, “Booster Gold isn’t quite there”), and despite online speculation, Gunn seemed to downplay rumors that Kumail Nanjiani was attached to star.
Now, with Jenkins officially on board, the series appears to have fresh momentum, and it’s arriving right in time for DC’s San Diego Comic-Con push. Gunn will be at the SDCC this weekend along with John Cena to promote Peacemaker Season 2, so maybe Gunn will offer updates on the wider slate.

Who Is Booster Gold?
Created by Dan Jurgens, Booster Gold (real name Michael Jon “Booster” Carter) hails from Gotham City. He’s a disgraced college football star who was expelled for gambling and ultimately becomes a time-traveling superhero. Though part of the Justice League, Booster is known for his narcissism, obsession with fame, and flashy antics. His name came from Ronald Reagan after Booster saved the former president.
The character has been a favorite since the late 1980s, often portrayed as a comedic foil to more serious heroes. Chris Pratt is a fan-favorite to play the character, who played Star-Lord for Gunn in the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy films.

Jenkins Returns to HBO
If Booster Gold moves forward, the series would reunite Jenkins with HBO. His pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death was canceled in early 2024 after two seasons despite a devoted fan base. At the time, Jenkins said the show had “come to a premature end” but thanked HBO leadership for their support.
Jenkins also previously created the cult sci-fi comedy People of Earth on TBS.
What’s Next for DC TV?
The news comes as HBO Max rides high off The Penguin, which just scored 24 Emmy nominations, including one for Limited Anthology Series and nods for stars Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.
Gunn and Safran are said to be considering other DC spinoffs too, including shows based on Superman characters Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi) and Jimmy Olsen (played by Skyler Gisondo).
The Lanterns TV series also recently wrapped filming on its first season.
Peacemaker Season 2 premiers August 21, 2025.
