HBO is moving forward with a Game of Thrones prequel movie, with Beau Willimon attached to write the script.
The project will reportedly focus on King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros and is being envisioned as a massive, Dune-sized feature film.
Aegon’s Conquest Heads to the Big Screen
HBO is developing the film as a large-scale theatrical event centered on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary ruler who forged the Seven Kingdoms into one realm.
Aegon’s conquest remains one of the most pivotal chapters in Westerosi history, set roughly three centuries before the events of Game of Thrones.
The story would chronicle Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they invade Westeros with their dragons and establish the Targaryen dynasty.
It’s distinct from the upcoming series adaptation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, where “Egg” refers to Aegon V Targaryen, a later monarch in the Targaryen line.
The project is reportedly being envisioned on the scale of Dune, signaling a massive production with heavy visual effects and epic battle sequences.

Beau Willimon Takes the Reins
Willimon is best known for his work on Andor and House of Cards.
His background in political drama and grounded character storytelling suggests the film could lean heavily into the power struggles, alliances, and betrayals that define Aegon’s rise.
An Aegon-centered film would mark the first time the franchise officially transitions to a theatrical format after years of dominating television.
A Long-Discussed Idea Finally Moves Forward
The concept of a Game of Thrones movie isn’t new. As far back as 2013, original series showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss reportedly pitched the idea of concluding the series with three feature films, similar to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and its sequels.
However, HBO’s then-parent company AT&T reportedly declined the proposal. The series ultimately concluded in 2019 on HBO.
Now, with the franchise continuing to expand through prequels like House of the Dragon and additional spinoffs in development, the timing appears right for a theatrical leap.

Ellison’s Praise for Thrones
Recently, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison was asked about his favorite HBO show and cited Game of Thrones, further fueling speculation that the brand remains a high priority at the corporate level.
With the franchise still drawing strong global interest, a cinematic retelling of Aegon’s conquest could serve as HBO’s most ambitious expansion yet.
If greenlit at full scale, the film would not only revisit one of Westeros’ most iconic stories but also mark a major evolution for the franchise, from premium cable juggernaut to blockbuster theatrical event.
