Lanterns Season 2 Gets New Writer As Lindelof, King Step Back

Lanterns Season 2 Gets New Writer As Lindelof, King Step Back

Christopher Cantwell is rumored to be in line to write Lanterns Season 2, should HBO move forward with another season of the DCU series.

According to Jeff Sneider, Cantwell could be stepping in as Tom King and Damon Lindelof are not expected to return in a major capacity, with both said to be busy with other projects.

The rumor is interesting because Cantwell already has ties to DC Comics, including writing credits on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Challengers of the Unknown, Justice League Unlimited, The Flash, Plastic Man No More!, and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest.

On the TV side, Cantwell is known for Halt and Catch Fire, where he served as creator and writer. He also has writing credits on Paper Girls, Vicariously, Krantz, The Prototype, and Our Footloose Remake.

Tom King And Damon Lindelof May Not Be Back In A Big Role

The report claims Tom King and Damon Lindelof would not return in a big capacity for Lanterns Season 2 if the show continues.

King is one of DC’s biggest comic book writers and has been involved with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, while Lindelof is known for Lost, The Leftovers, Watchmen, and other high-profile TV projects.

Lindelof also recently faced severe backlash for his recent Green Lantern remarks, which saw DC Comics writer Grant Morrison blast him; Lindelof ended up apologizing.

Season 2 Still Depends On HBO

For now, Lanterns Season 2 has not been officially announced.

The rumor only says Cantwell could be involved if HBO decides to renew the series, which most likely depends on how Season 1 performs, both with fans and with HBO (Peacemaker Season 2 lost nearly half its viewership and won’t be getting a third season).

The head of HBO also recently said he has to approve all scripts.

Another factor is Paramount’s pending takeover of WBD, which would put DC under new ownership. The sale is expected to close in July.

What Lanterns Is About

Lanterns Season 1 comes from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with the series focusing on Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a dark mystery on Earth.

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

The series follows the two Green Lanterns as they investigate a murder in the American heartland, which ties into a larger mystery involving the DCU.

The show has been described as a grounded detective story, with comparisons to True Detective. It is one of the key projects in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU slate and is expected to connect to the larger story being told across the movies and shows.

Season 1 premieres August 16 on HBO Max.
