Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie – rebranded to New Avengers – continues bombing at the box office as it underperforms in its second weekend.
Well, actually, if you listened to me, it came in right about where I said it would.

What is the Thunderbolts – New Avengers second weekend box office?
Following the trades estimating $35 million (makes for a better headline), Thunderbolts – New Avengers is coming in at $33.1 million for weekend two for a 55.5% drop from its opening weekend of $74.3M. That gives it the sixth-worst second weekend in the MCU, all of which have come post-Endgame.
I said it looked like a $32M weekend because it was performing similarly to Shang-Chi, which had a higher Friday and $34.7M second weekend gross. I wasn’t too far off.

55.5% drop doesn’t matter
And while that 55.5% drop is decent, truth be told, it doesn’t really matter as Thunderbolts opened so low. It would have been a different story if Thunderbolts opened in the 100Ms.

Better than Cap 4 but so what?
The second weekend also comes in better than Captain America: Brave New World‘s $28.1M but Cap 4 opened a lot higher. As of ten days, Cap 4 was at $141.1M domestically, while Thunderbolts is at $128.4M.
Cap 4 finished with $415M, it’s looking like Thunderbolts will finish similarly. Their big budgets, however, make those worldwide box offices a bust, which Disney just confirmed for Cap 4 in its recent investor report.

New Avengers rebrand fails to deliver
Speaking of Disney, they also gave Snow White a wider release this week for Mother’s Day weekend in 1200+ theaters. Obviously, that means moms and daughters aren’t showing up for Thunderbolts, which is no surprise, as they didn’t show up for The Marvels.
Up next for the MCU is Fantastic Four, which seems more of the same. Ditto on Disney+ with Ironheart.
That New Avengers rebrand is also a complete fail and a total waste of the New Avengers. Box office numbers below.
