James Gunn Wants Robert Pattinson As The DCU’s Batman: Is Superman Too Goofy?

James Gunn Wants Robert Pattinson As The DCU's Batman: Is His Superman Too Goofy?

It’s claimed that James Gunn wants to merge the DCU with the Matt Reeves Batman universe and bring in Robert Pattinson side by side David Corenswet as the new Superman.

Recently saw the announcement that the Clayface movie will be set in the DCU, produced by Reeves. Worth a mention is the flick seems to be more on the serious and horror side of things unlike Gunn’s Superman movie. Gunn has said the various DCU projects will have different tones, so Superman will be different than Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker, etc. So that means something like Clayface can fit with the DCU.

Gunn also recently said the DCU Brave and the Bold isn’t ready, which sounds like he isn’t thrilled with the script. It’s supposed to be directed by Andy Muschietti, but there has been little talk and The Flash mega-bombed. Update: Andy Muschietti confirms his Batman has been postponed.

Matt Reeves The Batman set with Robert Pattinson

“Something definitely going on”

The info comes via Jeff Sneider who recently dropped bombs including the Spider-Man 4 report and the possible casting of Sadie Sink as the X-Men’s Jean Grey in the MCU.

Regarding Batman, Sneider says he is hearing that James Gunn wants Robert Pattinson as the DCU Batman. Sneider says, “There’s something definitely going on between these two” :

“I think James wants Pattinson into the DCU. I think so. I think Reeves is resistant to that. And it may be that ‘okay if we do that, yeah I need a certain amount of control about the way [Batman] and the other characters interact with him behave.'”

So what Sneider is saying is that if they merge, Reeves wants guarantees that he has some control over Batman and related characters. I think it’s a smart idea, especially after watching Gunn’s first Superman trailer.

Matt Reeves Confirms The Batman: Part II Script Near Completion, Filming Begins Next Year

Not the reason for The Batman: Part Two‘s production delays

Upon hearing that, my first thought was maybe that’s the reason for what seems to be the delay surrounding Matt Reeves finishing his script for The Batman: Part Two (update: The Batman: Part Two has been delayed a year)? Maybe Reeves is fine tuning things to eventually pair his Robert Pattinson Batman with Gunn’s David Corenswet Man of Steel?

However, that doesn’t seem to be the case as Sneider says the production delay is “because of something else entirely, it’s because of a personal thing that I’m not going to get into.” Reeves recently said that he still finishing the script but confirmed the sequel will film next year.

I’ve also throw this out there: I’ve wondered if Reeves has issues with WBD CEO David Zaslav, as I have been told Zaslav wants to sell to Comcast/Universal. So what’s that mean for Reeves’ Batman universe? Or for that matter, the Gunn DCU?

Gunn Reeves DCU could work

Matt Reeves being a part of the DCU also wouldn’t surprise me. Recall how years ago my DC insiders said a DC reboot was underway involving Reeves, Gunn, and at the time, J.J. Abrams. Matt Reeves was also up to take over DC following the Nolan films, but WB went with Zack Snyder because Nolan told them to. Now years later Matt Reeves is at DC and also finally got to do his Batman movie he wanted to do years ago. Just think if Reeves first took over DC all those years ago how different things would have been?

Gunn also indirectly comments on the possible merger on Threads when a fan remarks that he fears other fans think Gunn’s Superman is to goofy to fit with Reeves and Pattinson’s Batman (personally, I think it could work under Reeves not Gunn writing or directing):

People are free to think and feel what they want to feel!
