Matt Reeves has provided a long-awaited update on The Batman: Part II, confirming that the script is nearing completion and production is set to begin in 2025.
Matt Reeves Confirms Script Status and Filming Timeline
In a joint interview at Variety with Reeves’ Catwoman of choice, Zoe Kravitz questions Reeves, “And you’re writing [The Batman Part II] right now?” Reeves confirmed:
Yeah, we’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year.
What’s Next for The Penguin Spin-Off?
Reeves also hinted at the future of The Penguin series, which stars Colin Farrell as Oz Cobblepot. Kravitz asked if there will be a second season for The Penguin; Reeves replied:
Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.
Aligns with what James Gunn has said
DC co-head James Gunn has been swamped by fans on social media regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II. Gunn has replied numerous times that reports in the media the script is finished is not right and has also said the script has yet to be completed and turned in.
So hearing directly from Reeves should calm the fans down a bit, and worth a mention that hearing The Batman: Part Two will film next year is good news.
Robert Pattinson’s Busy Schedule
Robert Pattinson recently signed on for the new Christopher Nolan movie which is also set to film next year. With Reeves confirming Batman 2 also shoots next year, that means obviously Pattinson will have time to do both.
It’s a similar situation for Marvel’s Tom Holland who has also signed on to the Nolan movie. Holland also has Spider-Man 4 to film next year and maybe even Avengers: Doomsday which could reteam Spidey with Robert Downey Jr.
Speculation on Villains and Plot
No plot details are known about The Batman: Part Two. It’s been said to be taking place after the first film, in the winter, leading to speculation the villain could be Mr. Freeze. While the last we saw of Mr. Freeze on the big screen was the goofy version in 1997’s Batman & Robin played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, it’s assumed whatever villain Reeves decides to go with in Batman 2 will be more grounded and realistic, much like Paul Dano’s Riddler in the first movie. Hush is also another speculated villain.
The Batman: Part Two has an October 2, 2026 release date. Colin Farrell will also be returning as Oz Cobblepot, and IMDb also lists Jeffrey Wright back as Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred. It’s unknown if Zoe Kravitz will be back as Selina Kyle and/or if a new love interest for Bruce Wayne will be introduced in the sequel.
