The showrunner of the upcoming Netflix Tomb Raider the Legend of Lara Croft anime wants to make it clear to fans that the show is also made by fans.
Speaking of the fans, they weren’t too happy with the trailer that dropped a month ago (watch below). On Netflix’s YouTube channel, the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft trailer has 15k dislikes compared to 10k likes. This shows that fans are divided, which is often a red flag.
One of the most liked comments about the trailer asks, ‘Where… are… her… guns?’ Another adds, ‘I see Lara is still falling repeatedly.’
Another fan commented, “This looks nothing like the Croft I grew up with and adore… She’s surrounded by all these people. Give her some room to breathe. Lara was at her best when she didn’t need anyone on her missions.”
Still another said, “Remember when she was a cool, confident and cocky seasoned explorer before they added trauma, grief, and daddy issues and made her practically insufferable?”
What does the showrunner say about Tomb Raider the Legend of Lara Croft?
Ew.com caught up with showrunner Tasha Huo, who made it crystal clear that their version of Tomb Raider is the same one fans know and love.
“There’s a desperate concern that the show is going to be too modern and not be enough of the Lara we know and love,” Huo said. “I just want the fans to know that this is the show that we’ve all been waiting for as fans. It feeds into all the stuff we love from the original games. This is a show made by fans, from top to bottom.”
The series will fill the gap between the Survivor trilogy of games (spanning 2013’s Tomb Raider, 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, and 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider) and is described as “a character-driven sliver of Croft’s formative years, a coming-of-age tale.”
“What created the woman we knew and loved from the ‘90s,” affirmed Huo.
Tasha Huo adds that the series unearths “the life obstacles that made Lara go from that dark, sad, kind of traumatized person in the Survivor series into that bright light that she became in the classic era.”
In discussing the essence of Lara Croft’s character and her journey in the upcoming series, showrunner Tasha Huo highlights the resilience that defines Lara.
“We follow Lara as she’s faced with difficult obstacles. We have to make those choices as Lara in the games, and it was important to me that there was a lot of darkness that she had to experience,” Huo explained. “In the games, she would die, and die, and die, and get back up. That was so important to me, to show that kind of hero that she is, that no matter what, I’ll get to my feet. You’ve got to throw her to the ground. We have to beat Lara up, because what makes her such a hero is that she gets back up, no matter what.”
Tasha Huo was also a writer on The Witcher: Blood Origin and is writing the upcoming Red Sonja movie and the live-action Naruto.
Tomb Raider the Legend of Lara Croft premieres Oct. 10 on Netflix and features Haley Atwell as the titular character.
