The Dark Knight Rises midnight opening has scored Warner Bros. the #2 spot for best gross behind the $43.5 million midnight opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

The amount blows away The Avengers midnight debut, which had around $18.7 million, and marks the best showing for a midnight super hero and 2D film.

The Dark Knight Rises is on track to make between $80-90 million today, and on track between $175 million to $180 for the weekend, according to some estimates.

The Avengers movie currently holds the best 3-day opening with $207 million.

The Dark Knight Rises opens in theaters July 20th, 2012 and is directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Michael Cain as Alfred, Juno Temple and Josh Pence as a young Ra’s al Ghul.
