Following my own review where I give it a 0/10, now former X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo tears into Marvel’s What If…? Season 3.
Posting on X, DeMayo first tweeted, “#whatif season 3 yikes just yikes.”
He followed it up with a second tweet, “I’d watch more to give notes on how it could’ve easily been done better but I have some water to watch boil.”
What if…? Season 3 writer developing X-Men ’97 Season 2
A fan made a comment about being concerned for X-Men ’97 Season 2, as DeMayo is no longer involved after having been fired from the series.
“I know Marvel and Chauncey tore up my intercut time hopping across the first episodes because it was ‘too complicated,'” DeMayo replied, referring to Marvel’s Matthew Chauncey who is credited as the writer on What If and Ms. Marvel and will be writing and producing X-Men ’97 Season 2.
“Yet complication and layers is what this show #whatif needed,” added DeMayo.
Kevin Feige not involved with X-Men ’97
The fan continued with question how Kevin Feige could let things get so bad. However, according to DeMayo, Feige isn’t really involved.
“Kevin was barely involved in #xmen97 outside of him greenlighting my pitch,” said DeMayo.
The fan asked DeMayo if he reached out to Feige.
DeMayo replied, “It would’ve been untoward. As I stated in my OF video, I reached out to Marvel the Thursday before I was let go stating that I no longer felt safe as a gay black man at the studio and that certain execs and crew were targeting me. I was let go the next Tuesday.”
Claims of racism at Marvel
Another fan commented how DeMayo would have done so much better, which saw DeMayo continue about his claims of racism at Marvel.
“Keep in mind that the creative team behind #whatif is entirely white and Marvel likes that vibe,” said DeMayo.
What’s wrong with What If…? Season 3?
A fan questioned why DeMayo hates What If, which saw DeMayo shoot back, “To has no substance and feels like fanfic. The dialogue is flat and so obvious, and some of the premises are just weird.”
Not returning to X-Men ’97
Another fan chimed in and said they need DeMayo back for X-Men ’97 Season 3, but DeMayo confirmed that’s not happening.
“They’re throwing out or reworking most of my season 2 as well,” he said.
X-Men ’97 “too gay”
A fan also remarked, “Howard and Ol girl cuddled up on my Disney title screen… just casual bestality nbd.”
DeMayo replied, “Yeah, but Xavier and Magneto staring at one another for five seconds was too gay and needed to be cut.”
What If Season 3 is the worst
A fan also remarked how What If Season 3 is the worst of the seasons.
“This is also the season where AC Bradley completely stepped back for Chauncey to take over,” said DeMayo. AC Bradley is listed on IMDB as the writer of the first Season of What If, is listed as writer on half the episodes of Season 2, and only two episodes of the third season, and she also produced the series.
The fan replied, “Honestly, she deserves to work in a better place than Marvel because their management right now is weird.”
“Agreed,” said DeMayo.
