Venom 3 Off To Promising Start In China

Venom 3 Off To Promising Start In China

Venom 3 opened Wednesday in China and it’s off to a promising start which could potentially mean good things for its U.S. debut and reaction from fans.

The latest estimates have the third film opening in the U.S. to the lowest of the franchise, a soft $65M, which is down quite a bit from Let There Be Carnage‘s opening of $90 million and the first Venom‘s opening of $80 million.

I think it’s as I said in my two previous reports, word-of-mouth is going to sink or swim Venom: The Last Dance.

What is the Venom 3 China news?

So what is going on in China is that Venom 3 has the highest one-day opening for a comic book movie following all the covid nonsense, even higher than Deadpool & Wolverine in the Middle Kingdom.

That’s not all as Venom 3 also has the second highest opening in 2024 in China, only trailing Godzilla X Kong.

However, the stat I found most interesting is that the Chinese liked the first Venom, they didn’t like Let There Be Carnage (agreed, it sucked), but they like The Last Dance.

Get this, the Chinese gave Let There Be Carnage a 5.5, but they gave Venom 3 a solid 9.0, which is the equivalent of an “A-” CinemaScore.

Now whether that correlates to the same reactions in the U.S. is unknown or whether it translates to a high box office is also up in the air, but at least it is a positive sign.

Luiz Fernando on X does a great job of going over foreign box office grosses and sheds some light on the Venom 3 opening day numbers in China:

  • Venom: The Last Dance grossed $9.4M on Wednesday
  • Highest opening day for a CBM post-covid
  • Second biggest opening day in 2024
  • Solid 9.0 rating
  • $768k in pre-sales for THU when it will play over 141k screenings (+5k)
  • $1.5M in pre-sales for its FRI-SUN 3-day weekend
  • Eyeing a 45M-50M 5-day opening & a $30M-$35M 3-day weekend in China, what could potentially become the biggest opening for CBMs Post-COVID in China

Venom: The Last Dance opens Thursday with the previews and officially on Friday. The film is directed by Kelly Marcel and stars Tom Hardy.
