Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s long-rumored collaboration has finally been revealed. The film is titled Digger, and the first teaser and poster are now out.
Warner Bros. and Legendary confirmed the movie will hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
Digger Teaser Revealed
The teaser leans hard into mystery and dark comedy, flashing the tagline: “In Digger we trust.”
The official description calls it “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” signaling a sharp tonal shift for Cruise and a return to satire for González Iñárritu.
Visually, the teaser shows Cruise in cowboy boots, dancing with a shovel inside what looks like a low-rent Los Angeles apartment. Other shots place him on a pier. He appears disheveled, off-balance, and far removed from his usual polished action-hero image.
What Is Digger About?
While plot details remain under wraps, industry buzz has claimed the film centers on a powerful global figure attempting to convince the public that he is a savior.
If true, that angle lines up closely with González Iñárritu’s past work, which often skewers ego, fame, and self-importance through absurdist humor and biting commentary.

Cruise Takes a Left Turn
Digger marks a noticeable departure for Tom Cruise, who has spent the past decade anchored to massive franchise filmmaking. The teaser alone suggests a more eccentric, character-driven performance that leans into discomfort rather than spectacle.
It’s a rare look at Cruise embracing something smaller, stranger, and potentially divisive.
Iñárritu’s First Film Since Bardo
Digger is Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first feature since 2022’s Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, which he made for Netflix.
The filmmaker is best known for The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director, and Birdman, which won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Birdman starred Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Ed Norton, and Zach Galifianakis, and became one of the most talked-about films of the decade.
Release Date and Studio Info
Digger is being released by Warner Bros. in partnership with Legendary.
The film opens exclusively in theaters on October 2, 2026.
