MTV RENEWS “THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES” FOR SECOND SEASON
MTV, a unit of Viacom, today announced it has renewed “The Shannara Chronicles,” its adaptation of the international best-selling fantasy novels by Terry Brooks, for a second season. The announcement was made ahead of the 2016 MTV Upfront presentation to be held in New York tomorrow. Developed at Sonar Entertainment, the series is co-produced by MTV, Sonar and Farah Films.
“This dream team delivered a beautiful, ground breaking show with compelling stories and character journeys which brought in new viewers. I can’t wait to see what season 2 brings,” said Mina Lefevre, Executive Vice President and Head of Scripted Development at MTV.
“We’re thrilled to continue the momentum established in Season 1,” said Jenna Glazier, Executive Vice President, Television Series, Sonar Entertainment. “Along with the ongoing support of MTV, the entire creative team is poised to raise the bar even higher in Season 2.”
The first season of “The Shannara Chronicles” averaged a 0.98 L3 rating in MTV’s core P12-34 demo and ranks as MTV’s top-rated new series this year. Additionally, “Shannara” saw the highest average L7 lift (+106%) for a freshman series in MTV history.
“The Shannara Chronicles” was also a strong performer on digital platforms, where it garnered 16.6 million streams across all MTV’s digital properties and brought significant traffic growth to the MTV App. The series also ranks as the highest grossing digital download for a single season on MTV ever.
“The Shannara Chronicles” is executive produced and written by Al Gough and Miles Millar. Jon Favreau, Jonathan Liebesman, Terry Brooks and Dan Farah also serve as executive producers.

Global box-office powerhouses and stars of the upcoming action comedy, Central Intelligence, Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart today announced via this video they will host the “2016 MTV Movie Awards.” This year’s show will tape at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Calif. on Saturday, April 9, to air on Sunday, April 10, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. For the first time ever, MTV will take the telecast entirely outdoors and onto the backlot to capture the essence of movie making magic against a dramatic nighttime backdrop. Performers and presenters will be announced at a later date.
“It’s an honor to be hosting the ‘MTV Movie Awards’ with a guy who’s not only one of the funniest guys on the planet, but who’s often mistaken as my twin, Kevin Hart,” said Dwayne Johnson. “We live for our fans and promise to make this an epic, historic unforgettable night for them.”

In a fan-forward first, MTV is giving the audience the once-in-a-lifetime chance to write and direct the official “2016 MTV Movie Awards” promo campaign with Dwayne and Kevin via multiple simultaneous livestreams. Tomorrow, beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET, the event will broadcast across Facebook Live, YouTube, Periscope, Meerkat and YouNow, allowing fans the opportunity to give the hosts direction via comments and tweets using #movieawards. Once complete, MTV will utilize the footage for promos airing across linear, digital and social platforms, crediting the fans that had a hand in creating the content.
With film revenues exceeding $5.7 billion worldwide, Dwayne Johnson has solidified himself as a global box-office powerhouse in both film and television and for the second time in three years (2013, 2015) has become the #1 International box-office star in the world.
Always adding to his busy schedule, Johnson shows no sign of slowing down as he recently starred in the summer blockbuster San Andreas, and currently stars in the critically acclaimed “Ballers” for HBO, directed by Peter Berg, where he plays an ex-football star turned money manager, navigating life on the other side of the field, which will be going into its second season this year. Also adding to a slew of tent-pole films in 2016, Johnson recently completed filming Central Intelligence opposite Kevin Hart, and will film the big screen adaptation of Baywatch, Furious 8, and an action based feature Rampage. Kevin Hart has continued to work non-stop and in 2015 Kevin can be seen in two movies and on the road for his What Now Comedy tour. MTV announced to a packed room of screaming fans at New York Comic Con that hit drama series “Teen Wolf” will return to MTV for the second half of season five on a brand new day Tuesday, January 5th at 9:00 P.M. Set thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization, the story follows an Elven Princess, Amberle, a half-human half-elf, Wil, and a human, Eretria, as they embark on a quest to stop a Demon army from destroying the Four Lands.
‘The Shannara Chronicles’ stars Poppy Drayton, Austin Butler, Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett and John Rhys-Davies. The series is executive produced by Jon Favreau, Al Gough, Miles Millar, Dan Farah and author Terry Brooks.

MTV today announced its New York Comic Con lineup for October 9 and 10, featuring the return of “Teen Wolf” and the highly-anticipated convention debut of the new epic Sci-Fi/Fantasy drama, “The Shannara Chronicles.” Each can’t-miss panel will feature cast and producers from the shows and the debut of exclusive New York Comic Con trailers. Additionally, both casts will be signing exclusive New York Comic Con collector’s edition items. The network also released the first key art image for “The Shannara Chronicles” today, which is featured above.

“The Shannara Chronicles” is written and executive produced by Al Gough and Miles Millar. Jon Favreau, Jonathan Liebesman, Terry Brooks and Dan Farah also serve as executive producers. The first two episodes were directed by Jonathan Liebesman (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”). MTV is producing with Sonar Entertainment.
