Feige & Russo’s Defend No Ramifications In Captain America: Civil War

While the critics loved Marvel’s (what else is new) Captain America: Civil War, I didn’t think it was much better than the Batman Vs. Superman theatrical cut, which the critics loathed. Sure it was cool to see Spider-Man on screen, but Captain America: Civil War had no long lasting ramifications, at least in my view.

We’re Still Not Ruling Out Avengers X-Men Crossover

There’s been rumors stating that Marvel and Fox are planning an Avengers X-Men movie crossover, with one even stating it’s supposed to happen in 2020.

To add fuel to the fire, Kevin Feige booted Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter from being involved with the movies. Perlmutter was a potential roadblock to working with Fox as reportedly Perlmutter is feuding with Fox over the Marvel character film rights.

In addition, Marvel is working with Sony on Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Spidey recently debuted in the MCU during Civil War, leading to speculation an Avengers X-Men movie could happen.

While we can all dream if an Avengers X-Men crossover movie will ever take place, it may not be in the cards, at least according to Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo.

“As far as we know, right now there isn’t talk regarding the X-Men,” Russo said while promoting the Captain America: Civil War Blu-Ray, reports Screen Rant. “I don’t know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations or if there are conversations happening but we certainly haven’t heard of any… Sony and Marvel had a relationship through Kevin [Feige] and Amy [Pascal], and through us and Amy. That’s really how Spider-Man came about. It requires a certain alchemy and a very special situation for studios to share properties. There was not talk on Civil War about the X-Men.”

While Joe Russo offers potential bad news about an Avengers X-Men crossover, the good news is that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige actually has a good relationship with Fox and X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

“I would love it. I would love it,” Donner said a couple of years ago in an interview. “I personally have close ties to Marvel because of Kevin Feige, because Kevin worked for me. But to take our characters and mingle them in the way that they were written, yeah, absolutely.”

Likewise, back in April while promoting Deadpool, Tim Miller and Simon Kinberg offered they would love an Avengers X-Men crossover.

“I would love to some day in part heal the rift between the world of X-Men and the world of Avengers,” Tim Miller said.

“Yeah, I think we all would,” Simon Kinberg added. “There’s so much crossover in the comics it would be neat to one day be able see those characters share a movie.”

“Kevin [Feige] is so awesome,” Miller continued. “Did you see my little pizza box in one of the scenes? ‘Feige’s Famous Pizza’ — that was my little.. trying to bring these worlds together.”

“Both of us are actually quite close with Kevin and have a profound amount of respect for what he does,” Kinberg offered. “And it would be fun to all team up one day, somehow, together, if that could work.”

“I think it’s a super smart move with Spider-Man. I mean, he’s great,” Miller said.

Deadpool also featured a Marvel Studios Hellicarrier at the end of the film (at least in concept art), so maybe we shouldn’t rule out an Avengers X-Men crossover just yet?

First High-Res Look At Big Spoiler In Captain America: Civil War

Marvel released a first look at Giant Man in Captain America: Civil War, played by Paul Rudd.

“We played with a number of different ideas in terms of what it would be, but none of them had the potency of that Giant-Man beat there,” director Anthony Russo told USA Today. “He’s just really impressed with Captain America, he just wants to deliver and he figures out a way to deliver where he might actually tear himself in half but he’s willing to do it and it works. It just lined up on a lot of different levels.”

Joe Russo also revealed the special effects were created using a green screen with a combination of Paul Rudd’s action on set with a motion-capture performer who would move around slowly as a giant would, stomping on things and tearing a wing off an airplane, and then they mapped it onto a 50-foot-tall man in post-production.

“The sequence that almost ate the movie,” Anthony Russo added. “I would say at least 40% of our entire post time was on that sequence, just because it was so complicated.”

“Captain America: Civil War” is now in theaters directed by Anthony and Joe Russo starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, William Hurt, Martin Freeman and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Synopsis:

Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Check out Joe and Anthony Russo below reacting to the Screen Junkies “Honest Trailer” of Captain America: Winter Soldier.

The brothers note that during creation of the script and in the writers room, they referenced the fact that the movie would get an “Honest Trailer” treatment and changed things up accordingly.

Likewise, Screen Junkies noted it was difficult finding things wrong with the movie, in which they had to knit pick certain things in order to create the video.

The Russo brothers counter some of the arguments and more.

Star-Lord & Thor Confirmed For Avengers: Infinity War

It’s confirmed the Guardians of the Galaxy – at least one member with Star-Lord – as well as the god of Thunder, Thor, will be appearing in The Avengers: Infinity War.

Joe Russo confirmed the news to the ComicBook.com web site.

On Star-Lord:

The movies are intended to be a culmination of everything that’s happened before in the MCU so you don’t want to get into spoilers but I’m a big fan of what James Gunn has done. [Joe Russo and I] are both big fans of what James Gunn has done. Star-Lord is a fantastic character and Chris Pratt is an awesome performer so you’d be very excited.

On Thor:

I’m excited to work with Thor. They’re doing some really interesting stuff with Ragnarok and where he’s gonna be at the beginning of Infinity War is gonna be a very interesting place and I think very profound. I think he’s gonna have a real emotional motivation after that.

It remains to be seen whether or not any of the other Guardians of the Galaxy characters make their way to Avengers: Infinity War. Interestingly enough, a while back a former Marvel employee that worked on the comic book told Cosmic Book News he/she expected the Guardians to be cannon fodder for Thanos.

And now we also know Thor survives Thor: Ragnarok.

The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 has a May 4, 2018 release followed by Part 2 on May 3, 2019 directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

Spider-Man Will Be More Fun To Discover In Captain America: Civil War

We’ve only seen a glimpse of Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War trailer (watch below). Honestly, hopefully that is all Marvel reveals as even director Joe Russo admits the best is yet to come.

“He’s certainly a character that’s more fun for people to discover when they go see the movie,” Joe Russo told Total Film Magazine. “He was my favorite character growing up. I have an incredible amount of passion for Spider-Man.”

Russo also comments on the Spider-Man costume, but it’s a mystery whether or not this is the version Tony Stark may have made and given to Peter, and offers the following on casting 19-year-old Tom Holland.

“It was very important for us to execute an interpretation of the character that was loyal to how I felt about him as an 11-year-old,” Russo offered. “So we were very dedicated to casting an actor very close in age to the age of the character. And also, an actor with that youthful spirit and insecurity that comes with being that age and having that kind of power.”

Following Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland will be featured in the standalone Spider-Man movie in 2017. Kevin Feige recently confirmed other Marvel characters will cross over.

Avengers Confirmed For Tom Holland Spider-Man Movie

With Spider-Man set to debut in Captain America: Civil War, it’s also learned Marvel Studios characters will cross over into the standalone Spidey movie in 2017.

Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige confirmed the news to EW.com.

“He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth,” Feige said.

It’s unknown which Marvel characters will be appearing in the standalone Spider-Man movie, but Joe Russo offered a bit of a tease, with the article noting it’s probably a joke.

“Let’s just say … Great Lakes Avengers,” said Joe Russo.

With Marvel characters appearing in the Spider-Man movie, it’s probably a good bet that Spider-Man will be appearing in the Avengers: Infinity War movies, which are directed by the Russo Brothers as well.

Tom Holland is playing Spider-Man and debuts in Captain America: Civil War next month followed by the Spider-Man reboot that has a July 7, 2017 release date directed by Jon Watts.

Russo Brothers Tease Spider-Man(?) Surprise

Anthony and Joe Russo have recently launched their Facebook page.

A couple days ago saw the pair reveal a look at a new Captain America: Civil War scene, and now they tease something for later today.

“We’ll be live with a little friend of ours tomorrow at 2:30pm PST,” the Russo’s posted last night on Facebook (meaning 5:30pm ET Friday, March 18th).

It’s our guess the “little friend” may be new Spider-Man Tom Holland, as it’s also our guess Marvel will be using Spider-Man to further promote Captain America: Civil War.

The Russo’s did just talk in length about Spider-Man and mentioned that the kinks are now out of the Sony and Marvel deal, and that actually they would have liked to use Spider-Man previous to the reveal in the trailer.

Here’s the blurb:

Also I think it was a little bit of a correction because it was a very complicated deal that Sony had to work out with Marvel Studios and Disney in order to make that work. We were very quiet about Spider-Man’s involvement in the movie for much longer than we would have been. We were artificially silent on the character because it was such a sensitive business deal still being worked out even while we were shooting. We went through a very thorough casting process, we tested Tom Holland vigorously with Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr,, we screen tested him along with several other actors, it was a very intense part of making Captain America: Civil War because he was an important part of the movie to us. Finally it’s all secure and we’re at a place where we can present him even in just a small taste.

If we’re wrong about Spider-Man, our next guess is Ant-Man?

Update: One of our guesses was close. Watch the video:

Joe Russo Hints At No Iron Man Without Robert Downey Jr. For A While

It’s not a pleasant thought to think about, but eventually Robert Downey Jr. will leave the role of Iron Man.

Downey Jr. was considered a gamble back in 2008 to play the role of Tony Stark due to his sordid past, but obviously that gamble paid off as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the best movie franchises in existence.

Robert Downey Jr. recently said he doesn’t think an Iron Man 4 will ever happen, but at least he offered if it does, he thinks they should go the villain route with Tony Stark.

Now Joe Russo, co-director behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movies, offer his take on what could happen to Iron Man when Robert Downey Jr. stops playing the character.

“It’s almost impossible to replace Robert, he’s the biggest movie star in the world. One close up from Robert is worth another actor’s entire performance, he’s incredibly gifted and insanely talented,” Joe Russo offered to Forbes. “I think if and when he is done with the character, I think you will find that Iron Man might disappear for a while. I think the only way that you could reboot that character is to give a generational gap that would allow another actor to at least have a chance to redefine that character without the enormous spectre of Robert hanging over it. There are so many characters in the Marvel universe that can pick up the ball and run without it through the next phase or two before you need to see Iron Man again, frankly.”

Robert Downey Jr. next appears as Iron Man in May’s “Captain America: Civil War.”

Russo Brothers Talk Avengers: Infinity War Characters & Spider-Man

We just heard from Joe and Anthony Russo in regards to Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil, now check out what the directors have to say about The Avengers: Infinity War. Speaking with Forbes, the Russo’s menton Thanos, new characters and Spider-Man.

On whether Disney/Marvel requires certain characters for Avengers: Infinity War:

JR: Maybe there’s a character requirement but with things like Avengers: Infinity War that’s obvious because it’s a culmination of all the films in the phase that have preceded it. You know that Thanos is going to be in there and the majority of the Marvel Universe is going to appear in the movies. Those are givens, but after that we can construct any narrative we want around it and what we think is the best execution of the story.

On new characters appearing in Avengers: Infinity War:

AR: There are certain characters that you don’t know.

JR: New characters that are going to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. It’s a big sprawling ambitious movie, it’s about as ambitious as movies get and it should be, and the title alone indicates that there will be an incredible scape and scope to it.

On where they are at in regards to Avengers: Infinity War:

AR: It is intended to be the entire culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe and, in many ways, the end to that part of it. But we don’t even have the first draft in on that script yet; we’re still in the outline phase. It’s hard not to talk about it too specifically now only because of spoilers but also because we’re still figuring it out.

AR: We have an idea but let’s see if that evolves over the next couple of months.

Will Spider-Man appear in Avengers: Infinity War:

JR: To be determined. We’ll see.

“The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1” has a May 4, 2018 release, with Part 2 on May 3, 2019.

Russo Brothers Talk Spider-Man In Captain America: Civil War & Costume

High-Res Spider-Man Image

Sony and Marvel recently debuted a peek at the new Tom Holland Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War trailer (watch below), Forbes caught up with directors Joe and Anthony Russo to get their take on fan feedback ranging from including Spider-Man into the movie as well as the trailer and reactions to the new costume.

On Spider-Man being included in the Captain America: Civil War trailer:

JR: We always intended to. He was my favorite character growing up, I still have my collection of comics in my closet so it was a dream come true for us to be able to have Spidey in the movie and interpret him as a character so we couldn’t be more excited and we wanted to share that with everybody else.

AR: Also I think it was a little bit of a correction because it was a very complicated deal that Sony had to work out with Marvel Studios and Disney in order to make that work.

JR: We thought it was a great way to reveal him. I think people are going to be happy with him in the movie, he’s got a very interesting role in it. I think they’ll be happy.

On Spider-Man being a part of Captain America: Civil War:

AR: I’ll say this, part of the fun of Spider-Man is that this film is basically a war amongst the Avengers and Spidey does not have the baggage that all these other characters have. He enters the story after the conflict that is happening between the Avengers and that gives him a very unique place in the story.

On Spider-Man’s costume:

JR: The design of the costume is what it is. That’s the design that we love, it’s the design that Kevin Feige loves and so on. He’s a very popular character so it’s always going to be controversial, people are always going to love or hate what you do with him, but all we can do is make sure that we love it, that we are true to ourselves and true to how we feel about the character and then hope that everybody else digs it.

AR: Part of issue is that we gave such a small impression of the character in that trailer, it’s something of a Rorschach test where people can pour as much of their Spidey anxieties out but when they see the movie they are going to get a very big picture of a very complete character that they have never seen before. It’s kind of hard to react to people’s reactions but they will change radically when they see the movie.

JR: And there is still effects work that needs to be done on it.

We like making strong choices with characters so while this might be a slightly more traditional, Steve Ditko influenced suit, it is certainly in our vocabulary to develop it into something more extreme as the storytelling requires. I think there are things that people will discover when they see the film about why the suit operate the way it does, why the eyes move, all that stuff is substantiated. Everybody wants the answers yesterday but then what would be the point of seeing the movie?

On the possibility of too many versions of Spider-Man in recent years:

JR: There are pros and cons without question; there is the fatigue factor that comes with it. I’m a skeptical fan and I would look at the multiple version and I would even go, ‘Guys, give me a break. Let me wash my palette clean of whatever the last interpretation was because you’re exhausting me!’ However, there are a couple of key factors here. One of them is that he’s back in the Marvel Universe, he’s interacting with characters that you’ve never seen him interact before, it’s actually a young actor playing the part which is a new interpretation of the character and that’s what I remember about the character when I was a kid. The cons are obviously fatigue but the pros are that it could potentially be a really invigorating piece of story telling and a catalyzing interpretation of the character. At the end of the day, the purpose here is to deliver a Spider-Man that people will **** themselves over.

Now 68 Characters For Avengers: Infinity War?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24498:]]

About two months ago saw Anthony and Joe Russo make mention they have so many characters that they are dealing with for Avengers: Infinity War that they have a board with 67 characters on it to keep track of everything.

Shortly after that, however, the Russo’s backtracked on the statement clarifying they were being figurative, and that they just meant there are a lot of characters.

The latest comes out of the Wizard World Cleveland Comic-Com where Cleveland.com reports the Russo’s clarified their earlier statement and now say there are 68 – not 67 – characters in Avengers: Infinity War.

We’re guessing, similar to the above, that the Russo’s are just having fun with the numbers, but there will still be lots of Marvel characters appearing.

“We have to tell a story and that story has to be built around the characters’ emotional arcs,” Joe Russo added. “And we can only have so many of those.”

The Avengers: Infinity War” Part 1 hits May 4, 2018, with Part 2 on May 3, 2019.

More On Spider-Man’s Intro In Captain America: Civil War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24413:]]

With members of Team Cap and Team Iron Man known, it only remains to be seen how Spider-Man will fit into the Captain America: Civil War equation.

The latest issue of Empire Magazine offers a hint as it’s said Spider-Man enters the fray after the sides are already drawn.

Check out the blurb:

The final key combatant here is Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, returning to the Marvel Studios fold after a deal was struck with rights holder Sony. He comes in after the battle lines have been drawn, and forms a relationship with one character who, for now, the Russo’s won’t identify. “Tom’s unbelievable,” says Joe. “We’re very excited to present our vision of Spider-Man to the world. He was my favorite character growing up, so for a comic geek like me, this is a real moment.”

More than likely the character Spider-Man forms a relationship with is Tony Stark, as that’s what happened with the comics and has previously been rumored. It will also be interesting to see if it’s touched upon that Spider-Man is a 15-year-old boy involved in a “war.” Even though Peter Parker has the super powers of a spider, when it comes down to it, he’s still just a high school kid.

Petition Launches For Richard Rider Nova For Avengers: Infinity War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24304:]]

It is critical that you pay attention at this time!

Richard Rider Nova fans have launched a petition requesting the inclusion of fan-favorite Marvel Comics character Richard Rider Nova in The Avengers: Infinity War movies.

You can sign the petition here.

The Richard Rider Nova character has a long and storied history in the comic book world beginning in 1976 with the publication of “The Man Called Nova.” Richard Rider Nova was an important part of the original “Infinity War” comic book event and was prominently featured in the story and on the cover art. We are writing to ask that you include Richard Rider Nova in the Infinity War movie as part of the large cast of characters who will be participating in the war to stop Thanos.

Nova was a sister title to Abnett and Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy title that inspired the billion dollar Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn Marvel Studios and Disney franchise. Though Nova didn’t happen to appear in the movie, his Guardians of the Galaxy movie action figure was the best-selling figure of the line, and Nova was even voted into the Marvel Heroes video game by the fans. Yep! You can’t keep a good man down!

For fans of the character, a likely added benefit of Richard Rider Nova appearing in the movie will be his return to the comic book world.  After all, the mere appearance of a character in a movie or TV show has worked for everyone from Howard the Duck to Hellcat.  The upcoming Captain America: Civil War movie has even brought Steve Rogers back to the Captain America role, and more than likely Thor’s return will be imminent as soon as Ragnarok gets closer to its release. So, if you want Rider back, this is likely the best shot for it to happen in the near future. Take a minute to add your name to the petition.  When the goal is reached, it will be sent to Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers.

Nova was even in early scripts of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, so there is that to build upon.  Check out some cool concept art:

Russo Brothers Tweet Out New Possible Captain: Civil War Related Image

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23910:]]

Following the ABC Captain America 75th Anniversary special, now the “Russo Brothers” Twitter has tweeted out a possible new image that connects to Captain America: Civil War or even Spider-Man.

The Twitter account is not confirmed to be official, but James Gunn did delete a tweet stating it was a fake (which probably means the account is related to promoting the movie).

Taking a look at the image below, obviously the first guess might be some sort of star. Perhaps on Captain America’s shield? However, the star on Cap’s shield is surrounded by blue, not red. There also looks to be a line of blue going through the bottom of the white part of whatever the image is. Maybe the paint gets messed up in a battle with Iron Man? Or perhaps this is an image of a patch or part of someone’s costume?

The Russo Brother Twitter did seemingly tease the Spider-Man costume, maybe this is related? Any ideas?
