Peter Capaldi Not Leaving Doctor Who

It sounds like Peter Capaldi won’t be regenerating in Doctor Who Series 10 and may be on board for the long haul.

The BBC recently announced that showrunner Stephen Moffat is leaving Doctor Who, with it been rumored Peter Capaldi would be replaced.

Now Stephen Moffat offers he hasn’t heard anything about Peter Capaldi leaving Doctor Who any time soon.

“I have no reason to suppose that I’m writing out a Doctor,” Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine, reports Den of Geek“Peter is loving the role, and long may he do so.”

Moffat also went on to state that just because he’s leaving Doctor Who, that it doesn’t mean he will get a last hurrah.

“The departure of a showrunner doesn’t mean anything to the audience,” Moffat explained. “Most of the audience doesn’t know that I exist, so they’d go blank if I attempted to wave goodbye to them. Oh, the embarrassment that would be. So I’m damned if I’m imposing my departure on the show. I just want to do a good one, before I hand over to Chris [Chibnall].”

Doctor Who Series 10 recently began filming and won’t premiere until 2017.

Doctor Who Tom Baker Joins Star Wars Rebels

The worlds of Doctor Who and Star Wars come together once again as the Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, has joined the cast of Star Wars Rebels Season 3.

Tom Baker will play the character Bendu, who is described as the “middle way of the Force” – not Dark Side or Light Side – he’s “something else, a force of nature.”

Star Wars Rebels showrunner David Filoni announced the casting at this past weekend’s Star Wars Celebration offering he specifically created the character of Bendu with Tom Baker in mind.

‘[Bendu is] so unique in everything he does,’ Filoni said, adding that Bendu is “a different kind of Force character/creature than we’ve had before” and will make a “big difference.”

You can get a glimpse of Tom Baker’s character and voice of Bendu in the new Star Wars Rebels Season 3 trailer below (around 1:48 mark).

Dave Filoni, a big Doctor Who fan, also previously cast David Tennant in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Doctor Who Series 10: New Companion & Trailer Revealed

The BBC has announced Pearl Mackie will play the Doctor Who Season 10 companion and released images and a new trailer to go along with it. Below you can read the official announcement.

Doctor Who Season 10 premiers in 2017.

Info:

BBC AMERICA today announced Pearl Mackie will join the Doctor Who cast as The Doctor’s new companion. Pearl was exclusively revealed to audiences on BBC One during half time the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday 23rd August.

On joining the cast in her first major television role, Pearl said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It’s such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn’t be prouder to call the TARDIS my home!

“Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space. Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in – I can’t wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series.

“I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can’t wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!

Shooting the trailer was absolutely mental, there were pyro technics and smoke and I met my first Dalek! I’m not sure it will ever become ‘the norm’ seeing crazy monsters on set, but I cannot wait to meet some more! The weirder the better, bring it on!”

Peter Capaldi said: “It is a genuine delight to welcome Pearl Mackie to Doctor Who. A fine, fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm, she’s a refreshing addition to the TARDIS and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to The Doctor’s adventures.”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer adds: “A new face in the TARDIS, a new voyage about to begin: welcome aboard the amazing Pearl Mackie! This is where the story really starts.”

Charlotte Moore, Acting Director of Television said: “It’s so exciting to be revealing the much anticipated new companion to the nation in such spectacular style. Pearl brings a wonderful energy and lights up the screen. She will captivate Doctor Who fans old and new across the globe.”

Brian Minchin, Executive Producer adds: “We’re utterly thrilled to have the hugely talented Pearl join Doctor Who and I can’t wait to begin her new adventures in time and space!”

Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales produced drama and will return later this year with a Christmas Special. The new series will start on BBC One in 2017.

Trailer For Doctor Who David Tennant & Catherine Tate Audio Adventures

David Tennant and Catherine Tate return to Doctor Who in the form of new audio adventures.

Listen to the trailer above.

Official info, images and a video with Tennant and Tate talking about the series can be found below.

Info:

David Tennant is returning as the Tenth Doctor alongside Catherine Tate as his companion Donna Noble in three Doctor Who Audio Dramas!

David Tennant portrayed the Doctor on screen from 2005 until 1 January 2010, returning to play alongside Matt Smith and John Hurt in the 50th Anniversary special The Day of the Doctor in 2013. Catherine Tate made her debut as Donna in December 2006, and after a series and two festive specials she made her last appearance alongside David on 1 January 2010. Their on-screen partnership is generally regarded as one of the great high-points of the enduring science fiction phenomenon.

‘I still remember the sense of joy I had when I heard that David had been asked to play the Doctor,’ says Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery. ‘We were all so pleased for him — as we knew how much Doctor Who meant to him. And now David comes full circle, back doing Doctor Who with Big Finish — except that this time he’s playing the Doctor! It’s the same but different — it’s wonderful to have him back!’

The series opens with Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Technophobia by Matt Fitton, which is set in a London slightly in the future, where mankind is gradually losing its ability to use everyday technology. Could there be an evil force at work?

In Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Time Reaver by Jenny T Colgan the Doctor and Donna arrive on Calibris – ‘An entirely mechanical planet. Catch, hitch, fuel, fix, buy, pretty much any kind of transportation in existence.’ It’s also a world full of scoundrels, where a deadly black market has opened up in a device known only as the Time Reaver.

Finally, in Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Death and the Queen by James Goss, Donna is swept along in a fairytale romance and meets the man of her dreams in the beautiful land of Goritania. What can possibly go wrong? And why has the Doctor never heard of Goritania?

‘I’ve enjoyed working with all the Doctors on TV, but David is the only one I’d known before he became the Doctor,’ says executive producer Nicholas Briggs. ‘I’d worked with him on our Dalek Empire series for Big Finish and had such fun. So along with the excitement of directing new Tenth Doctor adventures, I’m so happy to be working with an old chum again.’

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures is produced by David Richardson, script edited by Matt Fitton and James Goss and directed by Nicholas Briggs.

‘This is one of those dream projects where I’ve spent months pinching myself. I’m covered in bruises,’ says David. ‘With two major international stars in place, and the legacy of this era of the TV show to live up to, we’ve worked our socks off to try and make some very special stories for this box set. Expect adventure, fun, scares… and some tears too.’

Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures will be released in May 2016 – exclusively on the Big Finish website. Each of the three titles are available to pre-order separately today for just £10.99 on CD or £8.99 to download. A bundle of all three titles is also available for £25 on CD and £22 to download!

All three stories are also available in the Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures Volume 1 – Limited Edition set. Limited to just 5,000 copies and available exclusively from bigfinish.com, and the lavish book-sized box set includes exclusive artwork, photography, articles and a one-hour documentary featuring interviews with the stars and production team. You can pre-order the set today at the special price of £30 on CD or £25 to download – offering a £5 discount against the standard price!

Doctor Who Coming To Amazon Prime

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24415:]]

The BBC recently removed Doctor Who from Netflix and Hulu, and while it was thought the BBC might have been launching their own streaming service, it’s now become known the new home of The Doctor is at Amazon.

In a tweet that has since been deleted for some reason, Amazon announced Doctor Who series 1-8 will be available to stream through Amazon Prime in March.

“Want to know the future? Now you can! Here’s what’s coming to #PrimeVideo in March. #Bosch #DrWho,” the tweet said, which was accompanied by a video (watch below) teasing other titles coming to Amazon Prime next month: season two of Bosch, season three of Orphan Black, the original Ghostbusters movie, and The End of the Tour.

Doctor Who is currently available on Netflix across the pond, but will be removed in May. It’s unknown if Doctor Who will continue through Netflix in the UK or move on to Amazon Prime.

New Doctor Who episodes aren’t set to be released until 2017, so March can’t get here fast enought for Whovians.

Steven Moffat Leaving Doctor Who

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23967:]]

The BBC has announced Steven Moffat is leaving Doctor Who following the Spring of 2017.

Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall will replace Moffat as the new showrunner.

Moffat took over the reins on Doctor Who in 2010 with Series 5.

Official announcement can be read below.

BBC announces Steven Moffat’s next series of Doctor Who will be his last and confirms Chris Chibnall as new Head Writer and Executive Producer

After six incredible series at the helm, the multi-award-winning Steven Moffat has decided to step down as the lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who. Steven took over the reins on Series 5 in 2010 and during his tenure the show has become a truly global success. He has been responsible for introducing the Eleventh and the Twelfth Doctors in Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi; as well as two companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) and iconic characters and monsters including River Song (Alex Kingston), Missy (Michelle Gomez), Rory Pond (Arthur Darvill) and the terrifying Weeping Angels. Plus, the smash hit 50th Anniversary special in 2013 which saw fans around the world celebrate the world’s longest-running sci-fi series with the Doctors Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt battling the deadly Daleks in a feature-length episode. Steven’s final series will air on BBC One in spring 2017 and there will be a Christmas Special in 2016.

Steven Moffat says: “Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I’m just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out. While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I’ll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the TARDIS warm for him. It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I am beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British Television drama will be taking the Time Lord even further into the future. At the start of season 11, Chris Chibnall will become the new showrunner of Doctor Who. And I will be thrown in a skip.”

Like Steven, Chris Chibnall is also a lifelong Doctor Who fan and a multi-award-winning writer and executive producer. He has most recently achieved huge success with the triple-BAFTA-winning hit ITV series Broadchurch. His other credits include BAFTA-nominated The Great Train Robbery, United, Law & Order: UK, Life On Mars and Torchwood. Chris Chibnall’s debut series will launch in 2018.

Chris Chibnall, new Head Writer and Executive Producer, says: “Doctor Who is the ultimate BBC programme: bold, unique, vastly entertaining, and adored all around the world. So it’s a privilege and a joy to be the next curator of this funny, scary and emotional family drama. I’ve loved Doctor Who since I was four years old, and I’m relishing the thought of working with the exceptional team at BBC Wales to create new characters, creatures and worlds for the Doctor to explore. Steven’s achieved the impossible by continually expanding Doctor Who’s creative ambition, while growing its global popularity. He’s been a dazzling and daring showrunner, and hearing his plans and stories for 2017, it’s clear he’ll be going out with a bang. Just to make my life difficult.”

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, says: “I want to thank Steven Moffat for everything he has given Doctor Who – I’ve loved working with him, he is an absolute genius and has brought fans all over the world such joy. I will be very sad to see him leave the show, but I can’t wait to see what he will deliver in his last ever series next year with a brand new companion. I have decided to schedule Steven’s big finale series in spring 2017 to bring the nation together for what will be a huge event on the channel. 2016 is spoilt with national moments including the Euros and Olympics and I want to hold something big back for 2017 – I promise it will be worth the wait! I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Chris Chibnall, a wonderfully talented writer who I know will bring something very special to the hit series.”

Polly Hill, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, says: “Like Charlotte, I would like to thank Steven for his brilliance, which has made Doctor Who a global hit under his tenure. Chris Chibnall is the perfect successor to take over the reins of this incredible show, so I am delighted that his love for Doctor Who has made it impossible for him to resist! Chris is an incredible writer and his vision and passion for Doctor Who gives it an exciting future and promises to be a real treat for Doctor Who fans across the world.”

If he runs out of ideas, bring in Doc Brown’s Traveling Time Train and rebuild it into the Flying Time Machine and Missile Blast Time Train. Doctor Who Series 10 To Have Full Season

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22839:]]

Showrunner Steven Moffat continues to shoot down Doctor Who rumors with the latest being that Series 10 will be a half season.

A recent rumor stated that due to Peter Capaldi pursuing other projects, that Doctor Who Series 10 would air only six episodes plus the Christmas Special.

However, Moffat states that isn’t true as he tells the Radio Times Doctor Who Series 10 will have a full run plus the Doctor Who Christmas Special.

“We’re making a full series. I can confirm that,” Moffat said. “I’m making a full series of 12 episodes, plus a Christmas special. I don’t know when it goes out. That’s up to someone else. And even if I did know – which I genuinely don’t – I wouldn’t be allowed to say so as I have absolutely no say in it whatsoever. [But] it’s not being reduced in size. We’re not making fewer episodes. That’s all complete bunk. I can confirm that absolutely.”

Likewise, Capaldi said more of the same to the BBC.

“Not as far as I know,” Capaldi said responding to questioning that fans will be disappointed by a shortened Series 10. “That’s now what I’ve been told. So, that is not what I’m contracted for.”

Capaldi also mentioned that he would like to see Doctor Who air earlier on Saturdays at 7pm.

Moffat also recently shot down the rumor that Peter Capaldi was leaving the series, confirming that Peter Capaldi is Doctor Who and not going anywhere.

“Doctor Who” airs Saturdays on BBCA.

Peter Capaldi Returning For Doctor Who Series 10

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22756:]]

Amidst rumors of Peter Capaldi wanting out of Doctor Who, it has now been confirmed that Capaldi will be back for Series 10.

Showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed the return of Capaldi to Variety stating: “Peter Capaldi is going nowhere.”

Moffat also seemed to clear up any concerns that Doctor Who would be relaunched with Sherlock-style feature-length episodes (meaning less episodes, but longer) as he stated: “[Doctor Who] is definitely going to last five more years, I’ve seen the business plan. It’s not going anywhere. And I think we can go past that. It’s television’s own legend. It will just keep going.”

The rumors stated that Capaldi wanted out of Doctor Who to spend more time with his family, with the rumors also stating the BBC was going to regenerate with a new Doctor played by Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden.

Peter Capaldi Rumored To Be Leaving Doctor Who

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22321:]]

Update: Peter Capaldi is returning for Doctor Who Series 10.

Is it time to hit the panic button?

Amidst dwindling viewership for the new season of Doctor Who, not only is it confirmed that Jenna Coleman is leaving, but now it’s said Peter Capaldi is contemplating leaving the series

That’s not all as the UK’s Mirror is also reporting there may be a change in the way Doctor Who episodes are released.

With ratings and the numbers of viewers down this year the Mirror is stating sources are considering scrapping next year’s series of Doctor Who and screening feature-length specials instead, similar to the way episodes of Sherlock are released.

It’s said Doctor Who is the BBC’s biggest-selling program overseas, but according to the report, Doctor Who has hit a “crisis period” as viewership is now below four million (down around 2 million).

Regarding Peter Capaldi leaving the show, the reason given is said because Capaldi wants to spend more time with his family.

So with Capaldi and Coleman leaving, execs are considering scrapping next season and instead releasing a couple of “Sherlock-style” feature-length episodes plus the Doctor Who Christmas Special.

It’s also rumored the BBC may reboot Doctor Who with a new cast in 2017 with Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones, Cinderella) said to be at the top of the list to play the new Doctor. A new female Doctor Who is also said to be a contender.

The BBC is also developing a Doctor Who spinoff aimed at younger viewers with Class.

Steven Moffat Responds To Doctor Who Sonic Sunglasses Complaints (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22316:]]

If you happened to watch the last couple of episodes of Doctor Who, you may have noticed the Sonic Screwdriver has been turned into Sonic Sunglasses.

I found it noticeably absent with this past Saturday’s episode as lots of potential tech was present which the Doctor may have used the screwdriver on, and it turns out I’m not the only one who took notice.

There is a petition online to “Get Rid of the Sonic Sunglasses” and bring back the Sonic Screwdriver that has amassed a little over 1600 signatures in addition to fan complaints on social media.

While the number isn’t all that high, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has taken notice and posted the following response on the official Doctor Who Facebook page. Below you can check out the video.

“Sometimes you have to be heretical. Sometimes you actually have to embrace the heresy. And I just thought, really, on a whim, why would The Doctor feel wedded to a screwdriver? Maybe he fancies varying it for a while, maybe he’ll pop his sonic glasses on instead. Also, it maybe resurrected the original joke which we’ve sort of slightly forgotten, that the screwdriver was just a screwdriver that made a noise. It’s gradually become this all-purpose everything that looks really cool… It’s fun to be naughty. I know some people are incredibly irate about it, and I’m sure the screwdriver will show up again someday. But just to show that we can – why not?”

Perhaps Moffat is right and it’s time for a change. Hey, sunglasses are cool, too, right?

New Doctor Who “Class” Spinoff Announced

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22298:]]

The BBC has announced a new Doctor Who spinoff with Class, which looks to be aimed at younger viewers as it’s about a group of school kids attending Coal Hill School, which has shared a history with the Doctor for some time as companion Clara Oswald recently taught there.

Class is being written by Patrick Ness and is described as: Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. With all the action, heart and adrenalin of the best YA fiction (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you’ve never seen them before.

“No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain – but with monsters!” Steven Moffat told the BBC.

Writer Patrick Ness added:  “I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There’s so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.”

Class is being developed for BBC Three consisting of eight 45 minute episodes; the series  is executive produced by Steven Moffatt, Patrick Ness and Brian Minchin.

The series will film in and around Wales from Spring, 2016 and be on air next year.
