Six Villains Revealed For Daredevil

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19612:]]

With the Daredevil Netflix series almost here, Marvel has announced six new supporting characters and actors that will serve as villains for the series.

From the comics, Rob Morgan (“Person of Interest,” “Believe”) will play Turk Barrett, a smalltime criminal in Hell’s Kitchen, while Matt Gerald (“Avatar,” “Dexter”) will play Melvin Potter, a machinist caught between a rock and a hard place.

Siding with Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) are Peter Shinkoda (“Falling Skies,” “Hawaii 5-0”) as Nobu, a Japanese businessman with an agenda all his own; Wai Ching Ho (“Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Blue Bloods”) as Madame Gao, a powerful woman running her own trade; and Nikolai Nikolaeff (“Camp,” “Sea Patrol”) and Gideon Emery (“Grimm,” “How to Train Your Dragon 2”) as Vladimir and Anatoly, two Russian brothers looking to forge new names for themselves in America.

“With an already tremendous cast, these six actors help to fully flesh out Matt Murdock’s world and give life to Hell’s Kitchen,” said Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb. “We’ve been blessed to work with such amazing actors on this series to create a truly remarkable first season.”

“It’s an honor to be working with such a talented and diverse group of artists who vividly bring these characters to life,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight. “The challenge in bringing ‘villains’ to the screen is always in portraying them as three-dimensional characters. Our actors exceeded all expectations in this regard, crafting deeply flawed, wonderfully human antagonists.”

Daredevil premiers with all 13 episodes on April 10th.

Daredevil stars Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil) Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Vincent D’Onofrio (WilsonFisk), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Scott Glenn (Stick), Bob Gunton (Leland Owlsley), Toby Leonard Moore (Wesley), Vondie Curtis Hall (Ben Urich) and Ayelet Zurer (Vanessa Marianna).

First Look At Vincent D’Onofrio As Kingpin

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19445:]]

Check out a first look image below at Vincent D’Onofrio as the villain of the Daredevil Netflix series, Wilsin Fisk, aka The Kingpin.

USA Today posted the image including comments by D’Onofrio and showrunner Steven DeKnight.

D’Onofrio on Kingpin:

I just brought in this kind of character who in one sentence could easily go from being a child to a monster, depending on where his emotions take him. I wanted him to have an appearance of being super-powerful so that when he throws a punch, it’s a major punch. There’s a lot of weight behind it.

DeKnight on D’Onofrio:

He had a passion and an understanding of what we were trying to do, of making it a very grounded, gritty, realistic show. Here is an actor who’s really thinking about it on not only a character depth but a visual depth that I really loved.

New Daredevil Image Connects To Absorbing Man & Agents Of SHIELD

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19283:]]

A new promo image for the Daredevil Netflix series reveals none other than Crusher Creel, who in the comics is the villain Absorbing Man.

Fans of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. may find Absorbing Man and Crusher Creel familiar as Brian Patrick Wade played Creel in episodes this Season.

It’s possible the Creel in Daredevil is the father to the Creel in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., as Jack Murdock, Daredevil’s own father, is seen in the promo image set to go up against Creel in a boxing match.

Of course, it’s also possible the Creel’s could be one and the same.

COVER SHOOT: The Top 5 Comic Book Covers For 3/19/2014

COVER SHOOT

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This weekly feature will take a look at THE most visually compelling comic book covers on the market today. Whether they be rare variant editions or just your standard fare, these are the top 5 covers that stand out amidst the bevy of books released each week. They say, “A picture is worth a thousand words”  but these covers are worth more than that! No matter the storylines behind them, these covers compel you to at least check them out, which can be worth exponentially more than just words to the companies that publish them! Enjoy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14444:]]

1.  Noah (Image):  This movie adaption hardcover not only has a stunning cover by the world renowned, Niko Henrichon, but he does all the interior art as well! The linework and layout of this image exudes desolation, a single man bearing the weight of the world, no one could have conveyed that powerful of a thought more beautifully than Henrichon. This cover is so pristine and epic that it is overwhelming!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14445:]]

2. Trinity of Sin: Pandora #9 (DC): From the foreground pose to the choice of illuminating the background in an onslaught of baby blue, Julian Totino Tedesco, made all the right choices to make this cover pop off of the racks! The slightly diluted painting scheme is truly beautiful and helps solidify the main character in her new role of warrior of the light. It is almost heavenly in scope and astonishing to behold!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14446:]]

3. Daredevil #1 (Variant Edition) (Marvel):  This variant edition by Paolo Rivera, was originally petitioned as a color piece with Daredevil’s suit in a crimson red. I think this stark black and white version is even more eye catching than the original thought and helps to accentuate the graphic background design that Rivera meticulously laid out. While the foreground image of DD is done very well, it is the background that makes this cover great for me. Not only does it offset with the foreground image but it also represents the story well in regards to acting as a maze. It mimics DD’s disadvantage of being in a new city perfectly, making the whole book something special.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14448:]]

4. Harbinger: Bleeding Monk #0 (Variant Edition) (Valiant):  Clayton Henry is a master of mixing digital and painted art to make some of the most outstanding covers on the market today. This one is no different but the layout is done so exceptionally well, that it blows everything else away! The forced perspective is amazing, making you feel as though the focal point is literally floating above you. The central image alone can sell this book, but Henry made the background colors a complete juxtaposition to the foreground, creating a solid piece that is truly stunning!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14450:]]

5. Thor: God of Thunder #20 (Marvel):  Do I need to say anything about this cover? Does anyone create a Thor cover better than Esad Ribic? “I say thee, nay!” This image is pure power, pure strength and pure excitement! The detail Ribic puts into “old” Thor is astounding but just look at, even “older,” Galactus in the background!  The eye has so much to take in it’s dizzying! There is not one inch of this cover that doesn’t make the inner fanboy in me squeal with glee. ’nuff said!

COVER SHOOT: The Top 5 Comic Book Covers For June 26th

Cover Shoot

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This weekly feature will take a look at the most visually compelling covers on the market today. Whether they be variant editions or standard ones, these are the top 5 covers that stand out amongst the bevy of books that are released each week. They say, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” these covers are worth more than that! No matter the storylines found behind them, these covers draw you to at least check them out, which can be worth exponentially more than just words to the companies that publish them! Enjoy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9000:]]

1. B.P.R.D.: Vampire #4 (of 5) (Dark Horse): Fabio Moon creates a cover that is simplistic but overpoweringly eerie in the same breath! Buried in complete darkness, the figure, spider, vampire claws, whatever it may be , is coming for you! It is so surreal, it is actually tough to want to touch this book — and that’s what makes it such an amazing cover!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9001:]]

2. Daredevil #27 (Marvel): Artist, Jock, is known for his ability to enhance the aspects of modern art, melding them with classic comic styling to create visually stunning images. This cover encompasses the recent tales of both Foggy Nelson and Bullseye in such an iconic fashion, centering them in the middle of Daredevil’s world of chaos. It is both bold and memorable!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9002:]]

3. The Unwritten #50 (Vertigo/DC): Now, this is a true work of art! Yuko Shimizu creates a classic Japanese style cover reminiscent of ancient parables. Complex and exquisite, the border detail alone makes this cover better than anything else on the shelves this week, there is no way it could possibly be missed!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9003:]]

4.  Batman/Superman #1 -Variant Edition- (DC): Jae Lee made a breathtaking cover, but Kenneth Rocafort’s variant cover is what piqued my interest more. Dark and foreboding is what we expect from from a Batman rendition but not so much from a Superman one. The faceless alien with burning eyes is completely unsettling and the confidence that the Dark Knight exudes in the forefront, is only heightened do to the fact he has such a powerful ally directly behind him! What makes this cover even more interesting is the fact DC challenged Rocafort, a Superman artist, to portray Batman more predominately for this cover, taking him out of his comfort zone. If this is the type of cover we get when Rocafort isn’t at ease, imagine what he does when he is!

5. Justice League of America #5 (DC): David Finch brings us a cover that, although the style has been done before, is striking and beautiful. The juxtaposition between the vibrant colors of the flag and the ominous, stark black of the background makes this image stand out on the racks. The image is so well drawn that you can feel the sorrow in our heroes hearts just from the simple images of their hands alone. Plus, any image of a coffin prominently displayed on a comic cover equals instant curiosity from any fan. Perfect!

Cover Shoot: Top 10 Comic Book Covers For June 5th

Enjoy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8498:]]

1. Astro City #1 (Vertigo/DC): Alex Ross is a living legend of “realism” art in the comics genre! Focusing on bringing true depictions of comics characters to life, his paintings have graced covers too numerous to count but they all stand out above the rest on the racks. What makes this cover extra special is that it is the debut of Astro City for a new generation. Ross brings that aspect across stunningly as the Samaritan opens the door for, not only the other heroes, but to let fans into their world as well! Perfect!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8500:]]

2. Herobear and the Kid Special #1 (BOOM!Studios): Simple and classic, artist/writer Mike Kunkel, brings his modern American style of “cartoonism” back in this wonderful all-ages special. Crisp and clean, Kunkel keeps the cover to the “bear” minimum which helps to accentuate his skill of a single image on a bold background. This makes Herobear appear iconic and solidifies it as a stylised logo with but a single image!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8501:]]

3. Archer & Armstrong #10 — variant edition (Valiant Entertainment): Retro is all the rage right now and nothing means retro quite like the 8-bit variant covers that have been popping up everywhere! Matthew Waite’s “Donkey Kong” rendition is a cut above the rest due to him implementing specific examples regarding the characters throughout the cover. Just check out little drunk and sleeping Armstrong in the bottom corner to see how Waite mimics his cover with the hilarity writer Fred Van Lente brings inside the book!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8502:]]

4. Fearless Defenders #5 (Marvel): Piggybacking off of the retro game theme, Fearless Defenders has an amazing Street Fighter cover this week! Mark Brooks does a spectacular job paying attention to detail in this one, the logos are even the same! Mark Brooks always has unique ideas to bring to the covers of this book, from action figure themes to paper doll cut-outs, he truly does his best to make this book stand out on the rack.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8503:]]

5. Suicide Risk #2 (BOOM!Studios): Tommy Lee Edwards makes this cover scream off the racks with a blitzkrieg of colors that convey the chaos that awaits you inside! Lead character, Leo Winters, may be in a cacophony of exploding color but Edwards directs the reader upward to his eyes, where a stoic calm resonates and lets the reader know that below the surface, Leo Winters is deducing what his next move is. Fantastic!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8504:]]

6. Ten Grand #2 (Joe’s Comics/Image): Ben Templesmith is known for his mesmerizing line work that ensnares you with it’s complexity. Nothing resonates that fact more than this cover. With A stark white background all we can focus on are the two characters embracing in the middle. Nothing matters to them except each other, the rest of the world has fallen away. A cover should give you a sense of what the issue is about, THIS cover tells you what the entire series is about in a single image! Stunning!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8505:]]

7. Daredevil: End of Days #8 (of 8) (Marvel): Continuing with the beauty of single image covers, we gaze upon Alex Maleev’s haunting rendition of Daredevil. Juxtaposed against a white background, the stark crimson frame of DD can only draw attention away from the other books that may surround it on the racks. It is a powerful images that tells the reader the hero is weary of his quest and yet stoic enough to stand against evil. Maleev is one of the top cover artists of today and this is more proof as to why!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8506:]]

8. Earth 2 #13 — variant edition (DC): Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund combined to make an amazing color cover to this issue, but it is the line and ink version that is visually more astounding! Booth exudes enthusiasm in his line art that is sometimes overshadowed during the coloring process, but here we can see the pure emotion of Captain Steel as he is set ablaze capturing the the very essence of Booth’s line! There is something magical about crisp line and ink pictures that resonate with readers, this one is awesome!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8507:]]

9. Avengers #13 (Marvel): Simple line and ink can convey great emotion to a reader, then again, so can a cover that is so crammed with action that you are completely blown away! Lenil Francis Yu gives you an adrenaline rush from the first glance of this book and it makes you gravitate towards it immediately. His upward scale drives the eye from the twisted pile of heroes toward the looming threat above them, making the cover ominous as well as action packed! Few can manipulate such a magnitude of characters and convey that amount of emotion to a reader in a single image, few but the Yu!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8508:]]

10. Black Bat #2 — variant edition (Dynamite): I have watched Jae Lee evolve from an artist trying to find his own style to becoming one of the best cover artists in the business today! His balance of the subject and the juxtaposition of pure black against a vibrant background makes a truly astonishing cover. It seems overtly simple but it is a highly detailed melding of the creeping stark black of shadow with hint shades of grey. The sinister swathe of red draws the eye in and you can’t help but gravitate to that bold red logo as it screams off of the rack!

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for 5/22/2013

The Top of the Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This is the weekly “quick pick” of the best 5 comics to hit the shelves! Whether they are riddled with action, have the best dramatic sequences, blast you with a bevy of shock and awe or make you feel like a child again, these are the books EVERYONE should be reading! This “DOC’s” prescription for having the best week possible — begins with these Top 5 books! (In no particular order!)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7951:]]

1. Green Lantern #20 (DC): So, we may already know the final outcome due to a “shipping issue,” but this is book isn’t just about the end of the “Wrath of the First Lantern” crossover. This is the final farewell to writer, Geoff Johns! The man who brought Hal Jordan back from the dead, created the rainbow rings, dredged up Nekron from the depths of mediocrity and gave fans THE best run on GL in decades! This issue will touch on everything Johns has brought to the book from day one and will leave fans clamoring for more! As he paves the way for Robert Venditti to take over the book, fans cannot help but feel a bit melancholy over his departure. Geoff Johns has become synonymous with Green Lantern and he will be sorely missed. Thanks Geoff, it’s been a hell of a ride!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7952:]]

2. Occupy Comics #1 (Black Mask Comics): A collaboration of more than fifty of the best writers and artists in the business, this artistic tribute and sponsor of the Occupy Movement is more than just a comic — it is a record of modern history as it happens! A volunteer based anthology of prose, art and true comic form, Occupy Comics, was funded by a Kickstarter program last year and will eventually be turned into a hardcover edition. With ground-breaking creators like Alan Moore (Watchmen), Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), David Lloyd (V for Vendetta), Mike Allred (Madman) and David Mack (Kabuki) at the reigns, this is a veritable “who’s who” of the beset of the best! So, let your money speak for something more and get Occupy Comics #1!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7953:]]

3. Half Past Danger #1 (IDW): You want to know what this comic is all about? It would actually be easier to tell you what it isn’t about! This is Stephen Mooney’s epic pulp noir tale that includes everything a comic fan could want! Protagonist, Tommy ‘Irish’ Flynn must keep his troops alive through a tour of the South Pacific in 1943, but it isn’t just the German army that is a threat. They need to look out for DAMES – DINOSAURS – and – DANGER – as this yarn completely blows you away! A fantastic read that will remind you of great comics from the past!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7954:]]

4. Daredevil #26 (Marvel): Mark Waid has been turning the screws on Matt Murdock as of late, but it is the story he has been telling about Foggy Nelson that has been riveting! Foggy, DD’s best friend and confidant, has been diagnosed with cancer and no amount of super powers can help him. It is the soul searching and the bravery he finds in the faces and minds of children in the hospital that truly gives him a fighting chance. Waid breathes reality into the comic world as we empathize with these characters and we, and Foggy, are stronger for it! Plus, we finally find out the TRUE fate of a classic DD villain! No spoilers — I think you can “hit the mark” all on your own!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7955:]]

5. Lobster Johnson: Satan Smells A Rat (Dark Horse):  Yes, I LOVE pulp noir stories and you should too! Mike Mignola returns to his justice branding vigilante in this new one-shot revolving around the murders of skid row bums. It is up to Hellboy’s boyhood idol to find the diabolical fiend that’s been dumping bodies and slap them with the burning claw of justice! Buy it for the name, love it for the all out zaniness!

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile — 2/6/2013

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

( A weekly quick pick of the five titles that should reside at the top of your pull list. IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER! )

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5502:]]

1. Green Arrow #17 (DC):  Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino are the new creative team and they have completely leveled the the playing field in the world of Green Arrow! Everything begins new here — this is how it should have been from the beginning! Emotionally dismayed and financially broke, Oliver Queen has to finally deal with life like everyone else. But, not only that, he has to deal with explosions, murders and a brand new character that won’t rest until Ollie is dead. It’s one bad day for Green Arrow but an amazing one for readers! Check out my full review here!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5503:]]

2. Snapshot #1 (Image):  The creative team that brought you Losers, Andy Diggle and Jock, are back again with a completely unnerving tale about leaving things that don’t belong to you alone. What do you do if you find a cell phone laying around, and what do you do when that cell phone contains pictures of a murder victim? If you are Jake Dobson, you run like hell! Amazing book that will completely unnerve you!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5504:]]

3. Harbinger #0 (Valiant): An origin of one of Valiant’s greatest villains, Toyo Harada, shows just how the depravity of the human condition will exponentially change a person. It is a glimpse into humanity at it’s worst in the days following the bombing of Hiroshima and how a newly “gifted” little boy can survive it’s horrors by — becoming one of them himself. It has terrific characterization and the perfect jumping on point before the Harbinger Wars crossover!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5505:]]

4. Hit-Girl #5 (Icon/Marvel): This is the bloodiest, goriest, most over the top book of the week! When the badguys come knocking at Mindy’s door and threaten her family, there is only one thing to do — kick some @$$! From silencers, knives, chainsaws, a wood chipper and the most brutal rolling pin scene ever recorded; Hit-Girl is a whirlwind of brutality that is not for the feint of heart — but we love it oh so much anyway!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5506:]]

5. Daredevil: End of Days #5 (of 8) (Marvel): Brian Michael Bendis and his longtime Daredevil collaborator David Mack, have converged once again to tell one of the most compelling DD stories to date. Following reporter Ben Urich, as he tries to find out information regarding the death of Daredevil, Bendis and Mack have made the future of DD an awesome tribute for all DD fans to fall in love with! It is chock full of classic DD heroes and villains, creating a veritable “who’s who” of Marvel characters! From Elektra and Punisher all the way to Bushwacker and Bullet, End of Days will make any DD fan cringe in delight and savor the nostalgia as Urich tries to find the meaning behind the word,”Mapone.” A truly fantastic read!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3211:]]

1.  Daredevil #18:  Continuing the further demise of Matt Murdock and “Foggy” Nelson’s friendship, this issue brings pack someone from their past. But can they truly be who they say they are? If it is, ol’ DD may be headed for the psych ward!

2.  Justice League #0:  Don’t fret JL fans, even though none of them are in this book, we get a great story of Billy Batson and the origin of — Shazam! Finally, there is no debate as to calling which character Captain Marvel anymore! Plus, is that the Question? Hmm?

3.  Lobster Johnson: Caput Mortuum (One-shot):  After a lackluster one-shot last time round, Mike Mignola more than makes up for it this time! High stakes action and Nazis on blimps? Who doesn’t love that?

4.  Red Hood and the Outlaws #0:  We all know the story of how Jason Todd died, but now we get to see his entire origin! From birth until now, Jason’s life has been full of tragedy, but what if it all hasn’t been by chance? What if someone has been manipulating every moment for their own sinister pleasure? This book is twisted!

5.  Revival #3:  The “smart” zombie book, this one is completely different than all the others in the genre! Eerie and unnerving, Revival will get you that horror fix without falling into the trappings of dumb jokes and even worse scenarios. I just wish they would stop showing the “little white guy!” Creepy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:2445:]]

1. Beasts of Burden: Neighborhood Watch (One-shot):  Every time Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson grace us with a story of these P.I. pups (and cat), it is thoroughly moving and exceptionally eerie! This one-shot even gives us a reprint of the tale, “The View From the Hill”; a truly wonderful tale that still creeps me out!

2. The Boys #69 :  Garth Ennis is literally blowing the doors off of his creation that is so foul, DC didn’t want to be associated with it after six issues! This one sees Butcher move against his former teammates in a way that will shock you! Only two more issues to go!

3. Daredevil #16 :  Slow to start, this issue has a crescendo ending that will leave a serious division between Matt and “Foggy”! The “happy, go lucky” Daredevil days are over! Thank you!

4. Harvest #1 :  This book shows just how desperate someone can become, in order to regain that which they have lost. Medical depravity with no moral compass, this one will have you thanking your HMO!

5. Animal Man #12 & Swamp Thing #12 : That’s right, folks — a double header! The crossover of the century begins here and you can’t read just one! The “Rotworldprologue starts in Animal Man and continues in Swamp Thing, both books have been outstanding since the beginning and it continues here!
