Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.

Justice League Cast & Footage Speculated For Comic-Con

Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman are already confirmed for Comic-Con, but Warner Bros. has made no mention of Justice League.

When asked, Ben Affleck did state, “Yep. We’ll be there.”

It’s possible that Ben Affleck, Zack Snyder and the cast of the Justice League will show up Saturday at Comic-Con as a surprise during WB’s big Hall H presentation.

The last couple of years has seen WB show up big time at Comic-Con, which included Batman Vs. Superman and Suicide Squad last year in addition to the reveal of DCEU concept art. Previous to that saw the DC Trinity appear for the first time with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot on stage revealing a first look at Wonder Woman. The prior year saw Zack Snyder make the announcement for Batman Vs. Superman.

In THR‘s report on WB’s presence at Comic-Con, they speculate the Justice League will show up as well, noting, “…it’s hard to imagine there won’t be a surprise appearance by the Justice League cast and a splashy sizzle reel from the film to accompany them.”

With Marvel Studios appearing this year (they skipped out on Comic-Con last year) bringing Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Doctor Strange and Black Panther (possibly more with Captain Marvel speculated), it’s probably safe to assume DC will answer with the Justice League cast.

WB’s Hall H presentation with the confirmed cast of Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad takes place Saturday, July 23, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

“Justice League” has a November 17, 2017 release directed by Zack Snyder starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Willem Dafoe as an Atlantean.

The Batman Movie Rumored To Be Based On Arkham Video Games Again

It’s once again being said that the solo Ben Affleck The Batman movie may be somewhat based on the popular Arkham video games.

We were first told about the possiblity a few years ago, and now Batman On Film is claiming The Batman movie could see Bruce Wayne locked up in Arkham Asylum surrounded by his enemies.

The 2009 Batman: Arkham Asylum video game saw the Joker trap Batman in Arkham where the Caped Crusader fought his way through various villains including Bane, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy and Scarecrow.

There’s already been a rumor that The Batman would feature numerous Batman villains, so the Arkham Asylum connection makes sense, and also at the end of Batman Vs. Superman, we saw Bruce Wayne make mention he still has connections at Arkham and was sending Lex Luthor there.

If they do go the Arkham Asylum route for The Batman, it’s probably safe to assume it won’t be a straight-up adaptation of the video game. Ben Affleck recently said they were going with an original story for The Batman, which would borrow various elements from the comics.

The Batman movie has no announced release date, but we could find out more at this week’s Comic-Con. Affleck recently confirmed an appearance.

Matt Damon Would Play A Ben Affleck-Directed Super Hero

As Matt Damon happens to be best friends with Ben Affleck, many fans have joked about Damon playing Robin to Affleck’s Batman.

Speaking with the Irish Examiner, while Damon laughs at the idea of Robin, he does admit he would be open to playing a superhero if Ben Affleck was directing.

“I’d consider anything with the right director, but I can’t imagine there are any superheroes left, I think they’re all taken at this moment,” Damon said. “If [Ben] was directing me, I’d jump on it in a New York minute. I’d love to work with Ben.

“The problem with Ben is every time he directs a movie, he gives himself the best role in it,” Damon continues. “So until he’s willing to give up the best role to one of his friends, we’re not going to get on with it.”

As noted, perhaps with Affleck unwilling to give up the best superhero role (Batman), maybe Matt Damon could take on the role of a villain?

Or for that matter, a superhero that hasn’t yet been cast in the DCEU: Matt Damon as Green Lantern Hal Jordan?

Matt Damon has also drawn some heat as of late over his words regarding gun control. The actor makes his living making millions off of movies that include guns, but Damon recently stated he would like to see the U.S. adopt Australia’s strict gun control laws.

Ben Affleck Updates Batman Solo Movie

Today coming out of the Justice League set reports sees Ben Affleck confirm he is directing the Batman solo movie and offers an update on its progress.

Affleck is working on the Batman script with Geoff Johns and says they are still getting it right (via Collider).

“I think they have a date for it. Although, I don’t know if I would necessarily be able to make that date because I don’t have a script that’s ready yet. So that’s my—my timetable is I’m not going to make a movie until there’s a script that I think is good because I’ve been on the end of the things when you make movies when you have a script that’s not good yet and it doesn’t pan out.” [laughs]

Affleck continues with mention he wants the Batman script to be the best that it can before they actually go out and do it.

I have a script, we’re still working on it, and I’m not happy enough with it yet to actually go out there and make a Batman movie, for which I have the highest of standards, I would say. That’s something that would have to pass a very high bar for me. It’s not just like, ‘Yeah, that might be fun, let’s go try this out.’”

Earlier saw Ben Affleck confirm an appearance at next month’s Comic-Con, so perhaps we’ll get an announcement about the Batman movie there with the possible release date.

WB also showed off new logos for Batman (picture above) and the DC movies at the Licensing Expo.

Ben Affleck next stars as Batman in the Justice League movie, out November 17, 2017.

Justice League: Flash & Batman Scene Description

Following the Justice League details and Gordon, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Cyborg scene description, now a scene involving Barry Allen and Bruce Wayne becomes known.

It’s already been said that the initial Flash costume will be made from spacesuit material held together by electrified wiring, and that by the end of Justice League, Waynetech will have created a new costume for the Flash.

This scene involves Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) returning to his apartment where he finds Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) already there. We also see in the ensuing dialogue that Barry makes a joke which references Gorilla Grodd.

Scene description:

Barry Allen’s apartment is filled with all sorts of homemade tech. Bruce is sitting in a Lazy Boy chair waiting for him and has the convenience store security footage from Lex’s files in Batman Vs. Superman.

JoBlo has the dialogue between Barry Allen and Bruce Wayne as follows:

BARRY ALLEN: “You must be looking for a person who looks exactly like me but is definitely not me. Somebody…I don’t know…hippie…long hair. A very attractive Jewish boy.”
Bruce shows him the camera footage which has Barry grabbing milk in the store.
BARRY ALLEN: “Well he drinks milk, and I don’t drink milk.”
BRUCE WAYNE: “I know you have abilities. I just don’t know what they are.”
BARRY ALLEN: “My special skills include viola, web design, fluent in sign-language, gorilla sign-language…”
BRUCE WAYNE: “Silicon-based sand coarse fabric. Abrasion-resistant. Heat-resistant.
BARRY ALLEN: “Uh yeah I do competitive ice dancing.”
BRUCE WAYNE: “This is used on the space shuttle to prevent it from burning up upon re-entry.”
BARRY ALLEN: “I ummm do…very competitive ice dancing. Look man I don’t know who you are but whoever you’re looking for, it’s not me.”
Bruce then quickly throws a Batarang at Barry as the environment goes into slo-motion except for him who easily catches the Batarang and makes the revelation that Bruce is Batman.
BARRY ALLEN: “You’re the Batman?”
BRUCE WAYNE: “So you’re fast.”
BARRY ALLEN: “That feels like an over-simplification.”
BRUCE WAYNE: “I’m putting together a team of people with special abilities. You see I think enemies are coming…”
BARRY ALLEN: “STOP! Right there. I’m in.”
BRUCE WAYNE: “You are. Just like that?”
BARRY ALLEN: “Yeah. Umm…I need friends.”
BRUCE WAYNE: “Great.”
BARRY ALLEN: looking at the Batarang “Can I keep this?”

New Justice League Details, Plot & Logo Revealed

We get some insights to the Justice League movie as various sites are reporting on their set visits from London.

WB also released the Justice League movie logo (pictured above).

Details about the Justice League movie include (via joblo):

Update: A Justice League scene description featuring Gordon, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Cyborg becomes known.

Update #2: A Batman and Flash scene description is released.

Update #3: Official Justice League synopsis revealed.

It will be lighter in tone than Batman Vs. Superman. It will be more fun and will focus on the building of the Justice League uniting against a common threat.

Justice League is said to have a strong Jack Kirby influence, with the story revolving around the pursuit of three Mother Boxes (device that created Cyborg in Batman Vs. Superman): one from Earth, one from Atlantis, and the third from The Amazons.

Justice League takes place months after Batman Vs. Superman, with Bruce Wayne heavily affected by the death of Superman. Batman seeks to honor Superman’s death by building the Justice League. It’s further said Batman is not as dark as he was in Batman Vs. Superman, but Batman is now full of hope and centered on uniting the Justice League to fight against common threats while at the same time redeeming mankind.

Superman’s return will be featured later in the movie, with a large part of the film dealing with Batman uniting the Justice League.

As seen in the Batman Vs. Superman Lex Luthor deleted scene, Steppenwolf will be a key villain, but it sounds like there will be others. Steppenwolf has yet to be cast. Lex may be involved with the Steppenwolf and Darkseid story.

Darkseid will be an influence in the movie, with the parademons scene in the Batman Vs. Superman Nightmare scene reappearing. It’s unknown how much of Darkseid will be in the movie.

Ben Affleck confirmed he is directing the solo Batman movie, but they are still getting the script right.

Affleck is said to be executive producing Justice League to oversee Batman.

Batman’s suit will get upgrades, and a new and improved version of the Armored Batman suit will reappear at the end of Justice League.

Bruce Wayne will build a Waynetech carrier, The Flying Fox, for the Justice League. Batman will also have a new vehicle, The Nightcrawler, which was designed by his father, Thomas Wayne (said to play a large role in an underground tunnel battle).

Willem Dafoe’s role is revealed, which is a mentor to Jason Momoa’s Aquaman named Vulko. It’s said Vulko is more of an early Atlantean as he has gils, meaning the Atlanteans adapted to breathing underwater at some point.

Amber Heard is playing Mera, described as a warrior and a sorceress.

JK Simmon’s Gordon looks pretty much like you expect (mustache, etc.).

The Flash will be comic relieve in Justice League. The Ezra Miller Flash costume will be initially made from spacesuit material held together by electrified wire. Waynetech will design a new costume for The Flash, seen by the end of the movie.

Ray Fisher’s Cyborg costume will be all CGI.

Junkie XL is returning to score Justice League. Some of Hans Zimmer’s previous music will be used.

Zack Snyder teases when – and if – we see the return of Superman, his hair may be a little longer (a nod to the death and return of Superman story from the DC Comics).

Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and Willem Dafoe as the Atlantean, Vulko.

Will we see the Joker in the new Ben Affleck solo Batman movie?

It’s possible.

Suicide Squad has since finished filming, but Jared Leto has recently taken to Twitter to tease the clown prince of crime.

Leto posted two pics: One with the Joker shoes and one of himself which includes the text, “As sick as your secrets.”

It recently became known that the Ben Affleck Batman movie will feature an original story inspired somewhat by the comics, maybe Leto is on board.

Suicide Squad hits August 5th.

Ben Affleck Says Batman Movie Will Feature Original Story

We now know a solo Batman movie is in the works written by Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns.

Back while promoting Batman Vs. Superman in March, Affleck was asked if he was directing a solo Batman movie, would he use the stories from Batman: The Killing Joke or Red Hood. Affleck replies he would do an original story, so it would be something new for the fans, but would borrow what he could from the comics.

Here’s the blurb via Cines Argentinos.

I think what I would do, what I probably would do, is in some ways what Zack did with this movie, which is to borrow certain things from the great comic books, but create an original story around it because I wouldn’t want the fans to already know the story and be familiar, but I would borrow, steal, great things that have been done before in the comics.

We can obviously guess Affleck was writing the Batman movie at the time of being questioned, so his answer probably sheds light on his and Geoff Johns’ direction for the movie, which is speculated to be titled The Batman.

Ben Affleck Said To Be Working On Justice League Rewrites

A couple of days ago saw it revealed that Ben Affleck has been named as an executive producer on the Justice League movie.

It was reported that Ben Affleck “will work with director Zack Snyder and screenwriter Chris Terrio behind the scenes to make the film the best it can be.”

Now it’s learned that some of Affleck’s duties will be to help rewrite the Justice League script (which is currently filming).

While Forbes is spinning the news that Affleck is simply helping out to get the Justice League script more in tune with his Batman solo movie, I’m guessing it has more to do with the trainwreck of a script that was Batman Vs. Superman (and of course the negative reviews, reactions and poor box office performance).

While Terrio might be an Oscar award-winning Hollywood screenplay writer, his Batman Vs. Superman script was a complete disaster. Now whether that’s Terrio’s fault, Snyder’s fault or David Goyer’s fault is anyone’s guess (or all three), the fact is Terrio never read a comic book in his life prior to writing Batman Vs. Superman, and Terrio is said to have at least written the new and younger Lex Luthor, which a lot of fans loathed.

So it’s definitely a good thing Ben Affleck is coming on board to offer his two cents on Justice League. Affleck also co-wrote the upcoming solo Batman movie with DC Entertainment chief creative officer and comic book writer Geoff Johns. It’s assumed Affleck will direct the solo Batman movie as well.

Affleck is also currently in the UK with his family for the filming of Justice League.

Ben Affleck Named Executive Producer On Justice League Movie

More than likely as a result of the lackluster performace and reviews for Batman Vs. Superman, Ben Affleck has now come on board the Justice League movie as executive producer.

Deadline reports Ben Affleck “will work with director Zack Snyder and screenwriter Chris Terrio behind the scenes to make the film the best it can be.”

The article also notes: “Affleck is doing this to be supportive of Snyder, with whom he worked well on Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” and also that: “Warner Bros is still figuring out its stylistic superhero mojo, and Affleck will help.”

Affleck is also co-writing, directing and starring in the upcoming standalone Batman movie.

Batman Vs. Superman has grossed $864 million, which is shy of the $900 million needed for the movie to take a profit and well shy of the magic billion dollar number WB was hoping for.

There have been a lot of rumors and controversy as of late surrounding Zack Snyder and Batman Vs. Superman ranging from comic book professionals telling Snyder FU, to The Flash losing its director, to the panic button being hit.

Ben Affleck Speculated For Wonder Woman Movie Cameo

We’ve first seen Ben Affleck in Batman Vs. Superman, which will be followed by an appearance in Suicide Squad.

Affleck is also starring in the two Justice League movies and the standalone Batman film of which he is writing, directing and starring in.

Now it’s possible Ben Affleck might be featured in the Gal Gadot Wonder Woman movie as well.

Way back yonder, I was told Ben Affleck had signed on for a “huge” multi-picture deal to appear as Bruce Wayne and Batman in the DCEU.

While there is presently no confirmation of Ben Affleck or Bruce Wayne in Wonder Woman, there is confirmation Wayne Enterprises will be featured in the film.

A new Wonder Woman set image has hit the net featuring Gal Gadot along with a Wayne Enterprises armored vehicle, which may suggest Gotham City as well.

Not only does the image hint Ben Affleck might be appearing in the movie, but also that Wonder Woman may take part in the present day, as it’s known Wonder Woman is set in WWI as well.

“Wonder Woman” has a June 2, 2017 release date.

Ben Affleck To Direct & Star In Batman Movie Confirmed

It’s confirmed Ben Affleck will both direct and star in a new standalone Batman movie.

Affleck also wrote the script with DC Entertainment chief creative officer and comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed the news Tuesday at CinemaCon, stating WB is movie forward with the Affleck Batman movie.

Kevin Tsujihara also had good things to say about the record opening of Batman Vs. Superman, which leads into Justice League.

“It set up a great foundation for our DC slate, which includes at least 10 movies through 2020,” Tsujihara told a packed room, reports THR. “I’m also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a stand-alone Batman movie.”

Previously it was reported that Ben Affleck was only contracted to do two more movies following Batman Vs. Superman with Justice League parts 1 and 2, but obviously now we see Affleck and WB have extended the Batman deal. Ben Affleck is also appearing in August’s Suicide Squad movie.

The new Batman movie has yet to have a release date, but WB did just announce release dates for two DC movies – Oct. 5, 2018, and Nov. 1, 2019 – with one more than likely for Affleck’s Caped Crusader film.

Warner Bros. also showed off a DC Cinematic reel at CinemaCon which was introduced by Amy Adams (Lois Lane).

“You get your first real taste of this expanding universe,” Warners film chief Greg Silverman said in the clip.

Earlier rumors surrounding the solo Batman movie have mentioned the Red Hood.

Ben Affleck Batman Is Different Than Christian Bale Dark Knight

This is pretty much a given, but I suppose if anyone out there actually thought the new Justice League movie universe was a continuation of the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Batman universe, producer Charles Roven clears things up.

Coming Soon suggested to Roven that it could be looked at that the older Ben Affleck Batman in Batman Vs. Superman is actually the same Batman as Christian Bale, but set further into the future.

Charles Roven shot down that theory noting super humans don’t exist within the world of Nolan’s Batman, but do within the new Justice League universe:

Do you think so? We really wanted to make a clear demarcation line. Chris [Nolan], Emma [Thomas] and I would talk about how, in his “Dark Knight” trilogy universe, there are no superheroes. Batman is not a superhero. He doesn’t have super powers. Chris would always say, “His super power is that he’s a billionaire. He’s got all this money.” I viewed it that Bruce Wayne was a man who took his human abilities, whether they were physical or mental, and pushed them to the absolute peak of the human condition. But he still wasn’t a superhero. Then the villains, whether it was Ra’s al Ghul or the Joker or Bane, they were also all human. They might be aberrant, messed up and diabolical, but they were human beings. When we started doing “Man of Steel,” Chris and Emma were producers on that one as well. They knew that they were opening up a whole different universe. Even though the fans sometimes talked about, “Maybe Joe [Gordon-Levitt] is going to be the Batman in ‘Batman versus Superman,’” we knew that was never going to be the case because it is a different universe. In the universe we created with “Man of Steel,” there are superheroes. There are aliens. There are metahumans. The character of Batman isn’t Christian Bale ten years later. He’s different. He’s come up a different way. His parents, even though they died outside a movie theater, didn’t die outside an Opera theater. We thought about those things. I was involved with both movies and “Dark Knight Rises” was three or four years from the time I started working on “Batman v Superman.” It made me feel better that I could go, “That was that and this is this.” It’s just going to a different place with the material and expanding it out.

Regarding Ben Affleck, he’s writing a new Batman standalone movie script with Geoff Johns, and Affleck is due to start filming Justice League this week.

Kevin Smith Confirms Geoff Johns Writing Batman Script With Ben Affleck

On his latest podcast, Kevin Smith confirms that Geoff Johns is writing the new Batman solo movie script along with Ben Affleck.

Affleck previously mentioned he was working on a project with Johns, and it was also recently confirmed Affleck wrote a Batman script.

Here’s what Kevin Smith had to say about Geoff Johns working on Batman:

[Ben Affleck’s] been working on a [Batman] solo script with Geoff Johns as well. Last conversation I had with Geoff Johns, I was like, “Are you working on it?” And he said, “Yeah.” I said, “What’s it like, man? How do you co-write with someone?” And he’s going, “We just break it up. He takes halves, and I take halves and then we write, and then we switch material, and then he goes over mine, and I go over his.” That sounds so f—ing fun man.

Smith also previously let it be known the Batman script will be better than the Batman Vs. Superman script.

It’s been said Ben Affleck hasn’t signed on yet for the Batman movie, but WB just announced release dates for two new DC movies, with one of them more than likely for the new Batman film.

So it seems we’re just waiting on the official announcement from WB about Batman. Maybe at this Summer’s Comic-Con?

With it recently confirmed Ben Affleck has written a solo Batman movie script, following his positive portrayal in Batman Vs. Superman, now many people are excited about the next adventures of the Dark Knight.

King of the comic fanboys Kevin Smith, who wasn’t all that happy with the characterization in Batman Vs. Superman and noted Batman in the movie was “not the world’s greatest detective,” now says Affleck’s script will be better than Batman Vs. Superman.

“I guarantee you he’s read everything [Batman vs. Superman review-wise] … and he’s like: ‘OK, these are all the pitfalls my script isn’t going to fall into,’ ” Smith told the Freep Film Fest in Detroit

Kevin Smith even spun it (as he’s known to do), that Affleck could even get an Oscar nomination for the Batman movie.

“[Ben Affleck] could get another nomination or even a win for his Batman film,” Smith said, as Affleck won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting (original screenplay) and Argo (best picture).

Ben Affleck also previously let it be known that DC Entertainment chief creative office, Batman Vs. Superman producer and DC Comics writer Geoff Johns had helped out on the Batman movie script.

The Batman solo movie has yet to be announced and Affleck is currently only signed on to do Justice League Part 1 and Part 2, but he is appearing in August’s Suicide Squad.

With the critical reception so poor for Batman Vs. Superman, and depending how the movie does in the long run at the box office, it’s possible WB could fast track a new Batman movie starring Affleck.

Ben Affleck Has Written Batman Movie Script; Contracted For Two Justice League Movies

Following Batman Vs. Superman, it’s learned Ben Affleck is contracted on for at least two more movies with Justice League Part 1 and Part 2.

It’s also learned that Ben Affleck has written his own Batman movie script, though THR notes it’s only an option for Affleck and he is not contracted on a solo Batman movie.

“He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape,” he says, adding, “there’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option,” Patrick Whitesell, co-CEO of the talent agency, William Morris Endeavor (WME), said.

Ben Affleck recent teased he is working on something with DC Entertainment and comics writer Geoff Johns, which also has been speculated to be a new solo Batman movie.

Affleck will also be appearing in August’s Suicide Squad.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently in theaters also starring Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot.

Justice League Part 1 is due out November 17, 2017; Part 2 hits in 2019.

Kevin Smith Wasn’t A Big Fan of Batman Vs. Superman

Kevin Smith, who was actually involved in promoting Batman Vs. Superman, apparently wasn’t a big fan of the movie, particularly in regards to the story and Superman.

Smith, who will be directing an upcoming episode of The Flash, goes on to say on his podcast (via Geek Tyrant) that while the visuals of the film looked good, Superman was off (which we agree with).

“Remember before when we were talking about Flash, and that it has heart, humor, and spectacle. The movie I felt like didn’t really have a heart. It was certainly fucking humorless, there was nothing funny going on in that world whatsoever, but it had lots of spectacle. Like you can’t take that away from Snyder. Boy, he knows how to like compose a frame and how to setup a shot. Beautiful visual stylist but you need more than just the pictures, you need like characterization and these characters seemed off character, particularly Superman.”

Smith is also a big Batman fan and went on to joke about Affleck’s portrayal comparing Bruce Wayne and Batman to Donald Trump. You can listen to the podcast below.

Garman: He just wasn’t that bright.

Smith: Certainly not the world’s greatest detective! More like Bat-Trump.

Garman: He was Bat-Trump. A rich guy with a bad attitude. Who really hated immigrants.

Smith: He hates immigrants in a big bad way!

Garman: I’m gonna build a wall around Krypton, and I’m gonna make them pay for it. I’m going to build a wall around the Hall of Justice, it’s what I do. I build walls and they’re huge.”

Batman Vs. Superman Review

Batman!(Co-starring Superman)

A Film Review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

By Lawrence Napoli

Not even one day released to the American viewing public and the only headlines regarding this film revolve around poor receptions and dreadful reviews.  Ouch!  Is this film really that bad?  Are the fanboys being too critical?  Are the trolls having too much fun?  Is it being unfairly judged for not being absolutely spectacular?  I’d be lying to you if I didn’t admit just a hint of glee over this project’s initial, global reaction for a number of reasons: poor casting choices, using The Dark Knight Returns plot for introducing a Justice League cinematic universe and Batman upstaging Superman’s sequel (to list a few).  The details of this production had me shaking my head in absurdity light years beyond the casting of Mr. Mom as Tim Burton’s Batman back in 1989 so much so that its present day difficulties seem a foregone conclusion.

Rather than rubbing salt into open wounds, this review will be more concerned with simply critiquing what we have on the screen, and it begins with this film being Batman’s movie from the very first second to its very last.  In a way, it makes sense for the story to be so Bat-centric because “this” version of the Dark Knight has not yet been established in this particular cinematic universe.  It is more than just the plot featuring Batman or its themes, framework or even the outcome that makes it so.  The feel, sound and look of this entire film are “Batman” through and through.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this tactic outside of the cost of sacrificing every other character and their subplots as window dressing to Batman’s mission.  As such, Superman is all but designated as a formal antagonist if the story weren’t also interested in introducing the audience to the Justice League as well as a major tease for a destined conflict against one of DC’s Ultimate Evils in subsequent films.  The fact is that this story is so much more than just Batman and Superman that it crumbles under the weight of its own lofty ambitions.  This leads to a bit of distraction and incoherence which requires the viewer to make frequent leaps of faith to traverse the plot holes.

Then there’s the pacing of this movie which does a fine job at mimicking the overall flow and tenor of Man of Steel.  We start off pretty slow as Zack Snyder clearly makes conscious efforts at establishing intrigue.  But then, the film stays at that same tempo because we need a ton of exposition fed to us in order to appreciate what is going on thanks to advancing the plot more than a year past the destruction of Metropolis at the hands of Zod.  With little screen time left to build upon any drama or suspense, the burden falls squarely on action sequences to break things up and sometimes they get the job done.  It’s neat seeing Batman drive his car, fly his plane and beat up (and kill) bad guys.  [Yes, this Batman kills – more on that later]  Unfortunately, Batman isn’t Superman; meaning those awesome Dragonball Z live-action combat sequences from Man of Steel are nowhere to be found in this film, not even during the climactic battle against a conveniently placed plot device.

I understand that Zack Snyder is essentially doing the same thing as the competition, but trying so desperately to differentiate by doubling down on the gravitas.  These films may not be taking place in a Chris Nolan reality, but there is no denying the tone of seriousness here.  I for one am all for making these blockbusters as poignant as any art house, indie obscurity.  However, the fun factor should not be hunted down and eradicated like some Thanagarian Snare Beast.  No one needs to tell this production staff about the importance of finding the right balance between gravity and levity so you can all be assured that the next DC film, Suicide Squad, will be layered with silliness as a counterweight, but hopefully not too much.

Action Style

When the action happens, it is captured quite well featuring some extremely diverse Batman combat both inside and out of vehicles.  Meta-beings are relegated to flying at stuff, punching stuff and eye beams.

5/6

Action Frame

Fairly static camera setups for dialogue scenes and much more animated during combat.  Better than average.

3/5

Lead Performance

Batfleck wasn’t terrible, but he might have been if he had to “act” his own, gruff “Bat-voice” instead of relying on sound filters.  Henry Cavil is just plain solid, and I am pained that he’s totally overshadowed in this film.  Both men put in the serious wrench time at the gym for these parts.  Speaking of overshadowed: Amy Adams is superb, but did anyone really care?

4/6

Supporting Performance

Gal Gadot has the right presence for WW, but is basically as skinny as she has been for Fast and Furious films.  Michael Shannon surpasses himself playing a cadaver of the character he played in Man of Steel.  But Jesse Eisenberg produces a whimpering, erratic shell of some character meant to be Lex Luthor – not unlike many of the characters he’s made a Hollywood career by playing.  Also, Jeremy Irons’ Alfred was WAY too sarcastic for me.

1/5

Music

The quality echoed by the iconic theme music of The Dark Knight Trilogy normally gives Hans Zimmer an A+ when it comes to music, but then I heard his theme for Wonder Woman.  Ugh!  Also, not enough Superman’s theme is featured in this film.

2/6

Sound F/X

Fake Batman voices are to be preferred to whatever Batfleck would have come up with.  Thank you audio effects.  Thank you.

3/5

“Moving” = 18/33

Digital F/X

The CGI within this film is text book for pristine excellence for a Hollywood production of this budget.  A full point is deducted for the not so inspired monster design of Doomsday being a gray, Ninja Turtle, knockoff.

5/6

Special F/X

Explosions are solid as is gunfire and bleeding effects.  Practical effects shine during the Bruce Wayne charging into Metropolis sequence.

3/5

Costumes

I wasn’t in love with Superman’s suit in the first film, but it has grown on me.  Batman’s suit is great from the neck down.  Lex Luthor’s apparel is fitting for a genius tweaker who couldn’t be bothered by the concept of “respectable attire.”

4/6

Hair & Makeup

Neither exceptional nor horribly out of place.

3/5

Exteriors

Kent farm exteriors were perfect.  Cityscapes (only slightly) less so.

4/6

Interiors

I must say that I was impressed by this iteration of the Bat Cave.

4/5

“Picture” = 23/33

Hook

Batman sees first-hand what the damage of meta-humans can do to a city of mere Earthlings and feels mankind may need to go to war with Superman to survive.

3/4

Conflict

So the world’s greatest detective would not have thoroughly explored all avenues, investigated all the players and exhausted every last resource before forcing a physical confrontation with a god?  If he did, he would not have been played so easily by the bad guys.

1/4

Resolution

Batman and Superman just formally met, so to witness this contrived mutual respect they suddenly upgrade to is ridiculous.

1/4

Dialogue

I sometimes hear Daredevil narration when Batman speaks.  Superman easily has the best lines if for any other reason he isn’t flapping his lips all the time.  Every line of dialogue for Luthor equates to ear rot.

3/6

Exposition

The audience gets just enough to comprehend what’s happening in this film only and absolute zero for everything that happened off screen in the time immediately after Man of Steel.  Also, these scenes aren’t blended particularly well with the action to help with the pacing.

2/5

Character Uniqueness

Superman kills.  Batman kills.  And Lex Luthor is a tool.  These are all certainly unique takes on these particular characters historically, but also demonstrates a fundamental disconnect with the cores of who they are.  If Superman kills, his principles are no longer his greatest strength.  If Batman kills, his ironclad will and excellence of execution and preparation is rusted.  If Luthor has no backbone, no level of intelligence or resources will ever make him a viable threat because above all else, he is defined by his own hubris.

1/6

Character Relatability

Amazingly enough, I relate to Superman the best in this film because despite his amazing abilities he isn’t trying to lord anything over anyone and is really just trying to do the right thing the best way he can.  I’d understand Batman’s perspective if it were based on something more than vengeance.   I have no motivation to relate to Luthor as I mentally switch him off whenever he’s onscreen.

2/5

“Story” = 13/34

Overall MPS Rating:  54/100

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an average blockbuster.  It wasn’t atrocious, nor was it anything spectacular, but apparently that’s enough for its crucifixion.  An unfocused story combined with questionable casting and inconsistent performances demonstrate major weaknesses for perhaps one of the most hyped and anticipated film fictions of all time.  The expectations were clearly impossible to satisfy, but one film attempting to do so much in a mere 2.5 hours was all but inviting disaster.  A simpler story focusing on an introduction between Batman and Superman and how their credos differ in almost every way would have been more than enough to fill out a full time slot.  Then again, what made this plot work in The Dark Knight Returns is the fact that these two characters had a long history of conflict and disagreement that built up to a direct physical confrontation which clearly doesn’t fit in Batman v Superman.  Simply put, this was not the fiction to rip-off to launch this new generation of heroes, and that is Zack Snyder’s fault.  Taking a risk by inventing a brand new framework for licensed characters is not something indicative of a Snyder production.  His history is adaptation through emulation and that brief stint with originality gifted us all with Sucker Punch.  Need I say more?
