David Goyer Talks Defunct Green Arrow Movie; Won’t Be Directing DC Movies

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22477:]]

Back around 2008, a Green Arrow movie was in development from David Goyer (writer on the Batman The Dark Knight movies and Man of Steel) and Justin Marks (writer on Top Gun 2 and The Jungle Book). The plot of the movie centered on Oliver Queen being framed for murder and sent to prison, with his subsequent escape. The movie was titled “Green Arrow: Escape From Super Max” and featured a host of villains including Joker, Riddler and Lex Luthor.

While recently speaking to Den Of Geek, Goyer made note that with DC doing a villain-centric Suicide Squad movie, his Green Arrow film was ahead of its time.

“I think it absolutely was,” Goyer said about the project.. “I think if that script had come over the transom a couple of years later… It was completely ahead of its time. By the way, everything I see about Suicide Squad looks fantastic and it’s a different story. But it was absolutely ahead of its time. You know, Marvel was considering doing the Sinister Six and at the time, God, I think this was eight or nine years ago that we wrote a couple of drafts, but it certainly was like this oddball project at Warner Bros at the time, they were like – even though the script was good – ‘why would we make a movie about a bunch of villains? That makes no sense.’”

Goyer continues with mention that Warner Bros. at the time just wanted to focus on the more popular characters in their stable, but now with Marvel having success with Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, it was only a matter of time before a villains movie saw the light of day.

“The executive on it was really visionary,” Goyer said. “But the higher-ups, none of whom are at Warner Bros any more, just thought at the time, you know, we just want to make Batman and Superman movies. We don’t want to make any other characters. But this is before Marvel had really taken off, before more obscure projects like Guardians Of The Galaxy or Ant-Man or things like that had huge success, before the current gold rush I guess, if you will. It’s natural that eventually someone was going to make a villain movie, so that’s just what happened!”

The report also notes Goyer said he isn’t planning on directing any of the upcoming DC movies.

Kevin Feige Responds To Steven Spielberg & Zack Snyder’s Super Hero & Marvel Comments

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22296:]]

Will the Marvel super hero movies go the way of the Western genre? That’s pretty much what Steven Spielberg recently said, but guess what? That’s okay with Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige.

Feige recently took part in an Avengers: Age Of Ultron Blu-Ray event where he discussed Marvel’s Phase 4 plans, Infinity War, Marvel TV, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man. IGN caught up with Feige to get his thoughts on Spielberg’s comments as well as what Batman Vs. Superman director Zack Snyder recently had to say about Ant-Man and the Marvel movies not being iconic.

Regarding Spielberg’s comments, Feige offered the Western genre lasted almost fifty years, so what would mean Marvel is still in its infancy.

“The Western lasted 40-50 years, and they still pop up occasionally,” Feige said. “It’s been, what, eight years since Iron Man 1 if we count that, which I do, as the beginning of our MCU? Maybe [the superhero genre] will only last another 42 years.”

Feige also offered a rebuttal to Snyder’s comments that Marvel movies are the “flavor of the week.”

“I think we’ve been doing pretty well. I’m very confident in the films we’ve announced that we have coming forward that they’re going to be surprising and different and unique,” Feige offered. “They all happen to be based on Marvel characters and Marvel comics, but from a genre and a cinematic perspective, they’re all very unique. Civil War may as well be a different genre from Age of Ultron.”

Feige continued by offering an an example of comparing Spielberg and Snyder’s sentiments to movies that have adapted popular novels, as obviously the novel-to-movie industry is booming and won’t be going the way of the Western any time soon.

“The way Winter Soldier was a political thriller, I think there is a more emotional and more geopolitical and real world through line through Civil War than there was in the broader Age of Ultron with the killer AI Tony Stark invention,” Feige said. “I think it’s the same thing as saying: ‘I don’t know how many more movies can be made from novels. I think people are going to bored with novels being turned into movies. I don’t know how long it’s going to last.'”

Speaking of the Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan also recently fired a few shots in the direction of Zack Snyder defending the Marvel brand as well.

Kevin Feige Says Marvel Movies Will Reference TV Shows Eventually

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22270:]]

If you watched last night’s premiere of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD you may have noticed a few references to the Marvel movies namely with mention of Sokovia from Avengers 2 and the reference to Ant-Man; however, the Marvel movies have yet to return the favor.

According to Kevin Feige, that looks to be changing as he states the movies will reference the TV shows at some point and says it’s “inevitable.”

“I think that’s inevitable at some point as we’re plotting the movies going forward and they’re doing the shows,” Feige explained during the Avengers 2 Blu-Ray event held yesterday, reports IGN.

Feige did go on to note it’s difficult for the movies to sync up with the TV shows as the various Marvel TV series have different schedules.

“It’s easier for them. They’re more nimble and faster and produce things quicker than we do, which is one of the main reasons you see the repercussions of Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron in the show,” Feige said. “Going forward and certainly as they begin to do more shows and cast them with such great actors as they have — particularly Daredevil — that that may occur. A lot of it is by the time we start doing a movie, they’d be midway through a season; by the time it comes out they’d be done with the second, starting the third season. Finding timing on that is not always easy.”

Ant-Man Original Wasp Concept Art Revealed

Evangeline Lilly plays Janet and Hank’s daugher, Hope Van Dyne, and will be a big part of an upcoming Marvel movie as Wasp. Maybe we’ll get to see the original Wasp as well.

Artist Andy Park was also responsible for the cool Guardians of the Galaxy Nebula and Gamora art and the variant cover for The Thanos Quest reprint.

Ant-Man Passes Captain America: The First Avenger At Box Office

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22190:]]

Good news for fans of Ant-Man (and possibly a potential sequel) as the Ant-Man movie has just passed Captain America: The First Avenger at the box office both here in the U.S. and worldwide.

As it stands, Ant-Man has netted $177,586,846 domestically and $223,800,000 internationally giving it a current worldwide total of $401,386,846.

Captain America: The First Avenger, which spawned the popular Winter Soldier sequel, had a $176,654,505 draw in the U.S., with another $193,915,269 coming from foreign audiences for a grand total of $370,569,774.

We’re guessing Marvel has to consider this good news considering how unknown of a character Ant-Man is, especially compared to Cap.

A sequel for Ant-Man has yet to be announced, but Paul Rudd will be appearing in next May’s Captain America: Civil War.

Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige also let it be known there are big plans for Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp.

Evangeline Lilly Scanned For Wasp Costume & Is Writing A Comic

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21762:]]

Evangeline Lilly is currently starring in the Ant-Man movie as Hope Van Dyne, daughter to Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne.

As seen in the Ant-Man post-credit scene, Hank Pym gave Hope the Wasp suit.

Now while participating in a fan Q&A on Facebook, Evangeline Lilly reveals she was scanned for the Wasp costume, but not able to try it on as she is currently about eight months pregnant.

Lilly also commented that she is writing a comic book next year, though it’s not a super hero character.

It was also previously revealed that Wasp has been cut from Captain America: Civil War, but there are big plans for Wasp in a future Marvel movie.

Check out what Lilly had to say:

Wasp Costume:

Oh! And I was scanned for #TheWasp suit, but then I got pregnant. Let’s hope I fit it again! #ineedtime! [winks]

No. I’ve been too pregnant

Writing a comic:

I am writing one next year. So, I have to keep it a surprise. It’s not a superhero, but she is a very cool heroine.

Fighting Hulk:

I love your ideas and will share them with Marvel! I would love to see Wasp fight The Incredible Hulk. I think she would just roll her eyes at his temper and fly circles around him until he was exasperated. smile emoticon Haha!

Difference between Edgar Wright and Peyton Reed’s Hope:

She became more relatable and a little less like an original, 1960’s comic book character. I LOVED both versions, but the version we settled with fit better in the #marvelverse. I’d still love to do Edgar Wright’s version, too.

On Marvel movies and who she would like to work with:

I haven’t seen them all, but I really liked Winter Soldier for the powerful political commentary and who doesn’t love RDJ as #IronMan?? That said, I would love to work with #MarkRuffalo. I think it would be fun to see the interchange between Paul and my tiny characters and him.

A cut scene:

You wouldn’t know it to watch it, but the dinner scene between #CoreyStoll’s character and mine had me in stitches when we shot it. They cut a lot out.

Sebastian Stan Talks Captain America: Civil War & Ant-Man Post-Credit Scene

The Ant-Man post-credit scene (watch above) featured none other than a clip from Captain America: Civil War, the next Marvel movie.

The scene features Captain America and Falcon as they come upon the Winter Soldier, who has his metal arm (speculated to be vibranium) in a vise.

Buzz Feed caught up with Sebastian Stan who offered there is more than meets the eye to the scene:

I think [what Bucky was caught in was] more of a vise. But it would never happen at his own hand, by his own doing.

In terms of that scene in Ant-Man, I’ve seen some of the ideas people have about it and I would just say that whatever you’re seeing on the surface, it’s not as obvious as that.

There might be a whole lot more to the scene. I would say someone would probably want to put him in a vise.

“Captain America: Civil War” has  a May 6, 2016 release date directed by Anthony and Joe Russo starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, William Hurt, Martin Freeman and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Find Out How Thomas The Train Appeared In Ant-Man

Thomas The Train Ant-Man Clip

Wondering how Marvel got Thomas the Train in the Ant-Man movie?

Director Peyton Reed explains original writer and director Edgar Wright had the scene featuring a train in earlier versions of the script. Reed revealed when he came on board Ant-Man, it had been changed to Thomas the Train, explaining the situation with Film School Rejects:

“I believe in Edgar [Wright] and Joe Cornish’s original drafts it was a train set. At some point in the process that predated my involvement it became Thomas. As I came on, they had not secured the rights to Thomas. We had to do this whole thing where we did this presentation for the people who own the rights to Thomas. Thank God they agreed and found it funny, but there were definite stipulations. For example, nobody could be tied to the tracks and run over by Thomas. Thomas couldn’t be doing anything that could be perceived by children as evil Thomas. Thomas had to stay neutral in the battle, which was always our intention. Like anybody, they’re protective of their brand. I didn’t know what we were going to do if we didn’t get the rights to that. There are certain things I was going to be devastated about if we couldn’t have them. Thomas was one, because… you could do any kind of toy train, but the personality of that thing and the eyes moving back and forth give it a whole vibe and took it to another level.”

Not only does Thomas appear in a Marvel movie, but DC recently release an animated Justice League Thomas and Friends mash-up.

“Ant-Man” is currently in theaters.

Ant-Man Tops Box Office Followed By Pixels

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21477:]]

For the second week in a row, Ant-Man has topped the box office domestically, just narrowly beating out the new Adam Sandler movie Pixels.

Ant-Man nabbed $24.8 million to Pixels $24 million.

Ant-Man has now surpassed the $100 million mark in the U.S. ($106m) and stands at a worldwide cume of $226.4 million.

While Sandler and Pixels have been getting berated online, I actually loved the movie and thought it was really entertaining and fun (wasn’t expecting an Oscar-award winning film here, folks!), as did my two kids and their friend.

Thursday night saw the shooting in the Lafayette, Louisiana theater, but the tradgedy doesn’t appear to have affected movie goers as sales were actually up slightly this year compared to the same time last year (+2.4%).

Minions came in third for the week, followed by TrainwreckPaper Towns and Southpaw.

Worth a note is that Jurassic World passed The Avengers: Age Of Ultron domestically hauling in $623.8 million (so far) to The Avengers 2‘s $623.4 million.

Things should pick up a bit next week with the release of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

Spider-Man, Hulk & Ultron Teased For Captain America: Civil War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21476:]]

In conjunction with the Ant-Man movie, Marvel launched a marketing campaign featuring WHiH News (yeah, it’s fake).

Various YouTube videos were posted including an exclusive interview with Scott Lang, Darren Cross and reports associated with the movie.

As the videos progressed, much like any other real news telecast, a ticker showcased other “news” worthy items, which turns out are teases for what went down in Avengers 2 and also for Captain America: Civil War.

Worth a note is that mention is made of the Hulk post-Avengers 2; that the Ultron tech has survived; that the ticker also appears to be teasing Spider-Man with mention made that Stark Industries gave out scholarships to urban schools (Peter Parker?) and about an unclaimed lotto ticket (which happened with Spidey in the comics).

A user on Reddit went ahead and put the tickers together. Check them out:

• … has resurfaced in eastern europe remain unconfirmed after many thought the organization to be dissolved

• California braces for record drought

• Renowned astrophysicist Jane Foster to Lecture on her experiences with interspace and dimensional travel

• Rogue Hydra Agent Wolfgang Von Strucker confirmed, dead, his body was found in its cell after a supposed raid on an eastern detention facility

• Earthquake rocks South Africa.

• Steve Rogers to attend updated museum exhibit dedicated to his heroic efforts in WWII

• California continues efforts to address issues from record drought

• Stark Industries announces new scholarships for promising students from urban city schools

• Multiple countries recovering from catastrophic damage caused by sentient robot Ultron

• Leaders asking for aid, and for the avengers to be held accountable

• Senate hearings expected to continue into next week regarding relief efforts

• Tony Stark says that public concerns about Dr. Bruce Banner are “Baseless” and “Irresponsible” after the South Africa incident involving the hulk

• Pym technologies CEO Darren Cross says “Astonishing” new venture coming this week

• Winning lottery ticket of $675 million still unclaimed

Ant-Man Movie Review

Better Safe than Sorry

A Film Review of Ant-Man

In Kevin Feige, we trust.  This is the message I continue to carry forward throughout the ever expanding MCU and once again true believers, we have another solid building block as we march towards Infinity and beyond.  That’s not to say this result was a foregone conclusion.  I believe fans had similar concerns for another seemingly left of center Marvel license known as the Guardians of the Galaxy.  First of all, this film is about Scott Lang/Hank Pym/Ant-Man and this character(s) is completely off the radar for casual fans of comics and pop culture.  Second, the lead is Paul Rudd: goofball comedy veteran actor and not an action star.  Third, Adam McKay (goofball comedy writer) worked in tandem with Rudd to create the screenplay.  Fourth, there’s Michael Douglass (screen legend) and you simply don’t know what you’re going to get from any actor in the twilight of their career no matter what the project is.  Regardless of these or any other potential distraction or deterrent to a quality entertainment experience, you can indeed rest easy.  The end result is a composed effort to yield another capable Avenger who has his own style and skill set to contribute to stories moving forward.

However, the effort put into keeping an Avenger film on task and not run off the rails on a crazy laugh train (a la, everything McKay has ever written) was very obvious at several moments during the film.  How many more times did I need to be reminded that Scott was a family man?  How often did Scott himself have to play the straight man to his own motley crew?  How many cute bonding moments with insects needed to be shoehorned in?  All of these were conscious plot devices that kept the Ant-Man from the brink of The Other Guys.  As it turns out, they were necessary (and far too overt) “evils” to take as little risk as possible with the most obscure Avenger to date.  Ant-Man is a hero, he has worthy moral ground to stand on, he has skill and he’s light hearted with a shade of sarcasm.  Do any of these traits sound familiar to you?  Perhaps it would have been better to allow Rudd to channel full blown Brian Fontana into Scott Lang because at least his obtuse, 70s, narcissism would have been hilarious to see next to Tony Stark in the future to see who wins the “inappropriateness wars.”  Instead, the audience must rally behind a safe, bland, vanilla character type with precious little personality of his own to speak of.  Individual Avenger adventures are as large as their respective protagonists’ personalities as well as their unique skills.  I simply wished Ant-Man’s larval voyage left a larger footprint in the spectacular happenings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A full breakdown of the following Moving Picture Story Rating (MPS) “alpha build” can be found here.

 Action Style

All Avenger films contain some form of combat and Ant-  Man features plenty of pugilism and gunplay which are as bland  as Scott Lang’s training montage.

3/6

 Action Frame

Even if the fists and bullets aren’t flying around like ballet  choreography, movement within the frame (specifically all of  the miniaturization sequences) is really fun to look at; insects  and all.

5/5

 Lead  Performance

Paul Rudd does an acceptable job while Michael Douglas blew  me away with how genuinely interested he showed he was in  his role and its place in the MCU.  At some point, Ant-Man will  have to be “just” Scott Lang without the Hank Pym training  wheels.

4/6

 Supporting  Performance

Evangeline Lilly provides a decent love interest, Corey Stoll  plays another 2-dimensional Marvel villain, Michael Pena plays  a dumb stereotype and who hired T.I. for this movie?

1/5

 Music

All films can certainly use emotionally heavy orchestration to  make those epic moments on screen ascend to the next level.    That wasn’t the case at all in this film.

2/6

 Sound F/X

Hearing a tiny world come alive is just as important as seeing it  come alive.

5/5

“Moving” = 20/33

 Digital F/X

Getting a glimpse of the land of Avengers from an entirely  different scale presented an excellent collision of “regular” and  “tiny,” without too much cheesiness from the likes of Honey, I  Shrunk the Kids.  Insects working together with Ant-Man were  also well animated.

6/6

 Special F/X

Explosions?  Check.  Gunfire?  Check.  They’re simply nowhere  near the scope of any previous Avenger film (Even Iron Man 3)

2/5

 Costumes

Not much can be said of all the regular suits in this film, but I  was much more impressed by the design of the “Yellowjacket”  over the retro feel of the “Ant-Man” suit.  Expect a redesign for  future films.

4/6

 Hair &  Makeup

I was a bit distracted by Evangeline Lilly’s Jim Carey “bowl cut”  wig.  Why didn’t they let Kate from Lost simply grow it out?    Everyone else was acceptable.

3/5

 Exteriors

Regular scale settings were about as average as Hollywood can  get, but at the subatomic level, “insides” and “outsides” (as  assisted by heavy CG) has no meaning.  There wasn’t too much  interesting to see beyond the walls of abstract green screens.

3/6

 Interiors

I was more impressed with the tech look of the research labs  (thank you Iron Man films) especially when compared to the  antique nature of Pym’s personal domicile.

4/5

“Picture” = 22/33

 Hook

Who doesn’t love a tiny world perspective on things?  This  happens to be Marvel’s version of it and new angles on an ever  saturating genre are always welcome.

4/4

 Conflict

Hank Pym can’t be the Ant-Man anymore due to obvious  reasons, but I wasn’t sold on Scott’s need to take up this fight  himself, despite personal desperation being a clear and present  motivator.

2/4

 Resolution

I love all the connections made to the MCU, I appreciate the  obvious lead-in to Civil War, but I was a bit underwhelmed by  the cookie-cutter wrap up for Ant-Man himself.

3/4

 Dialogue

Conversations in general seem natural enough, but every time  Rudd speaks, he seems far too casual for a character that’s in  the position he’s in.  Douglas delivers more demonstrative lines  in a more demonstrative manner.  Ugh!  I cringe at anything  Scott’s crew says.

2/6

Exposition

The very first scene in this film gives the audience exactly what  it needs to understand everything about Ant-Man and how he  fits into this dynamic universe.  No need to be cryptic, yet.

4/5

 Character  uniqueness

Hank Pym is my kind of scientist.  Everyone else was my kind  of been there; done that.

1/6

 Character  relatability

Sacrificing and doing whatever it takes for one’s family is a  strong theme repeated amongst our heroes throughout this  film.  Can it be any easier to understand this?

5/5

“Story” = 17/34

Overall MPS Rating:  59/100

I was a bit surprised at this score as I enjoyed Ant-Man overall as a fairly entertaining popcorn, action and effects spectacle.  In hindsight, I liked this film more for its connections to the growing cinematic universe of Marvel’s superheroes.  I liked it less for its disinterest in really committing to standing on its own.

Game Of Thrones George R.R. Martin Loves Ant-Man, But Not Marvel Villains

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21441:]]

Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin posted his thoughts on the new Ant-Man movie over at his blog.

Martin is a big Marvel fan and admits he was a bit worried they would mess up the movie as it features Scott Lang, and not Hank Pym, as Marvel’s choice of smallest superhero.

I had a lot of trepidation when this movie was announced. Would they do it right, would they capture the original Ant-Man from TALES TO ASTONISH and AVENGERS #1, the character I’d loved… or would they fuck it up?? I was eager for the film, but apprehensive about it as well, especially when I heard it would be about Scott Lang, not Hank Pym.

Martin continues with mention he actually loved the movie, which is up there as one of his all-time favorite Marvel movies, just shy of Spider-Man 2 (Raimi) and the first Iron Man.

I am relieved and delighted to report that they did it right.

ANT-MAN has a proper balance of story, character, humor, and action, I think. A couple reviewers are calling it the best Marvel movie ever. I won’t go that far, but it’s right up there, maybe second only to the second Sam Raimi/ Tobey McGuire Spider-Man film, the one with Doc Ock. I’ve liked most of the Marvel movies, to be sure, I’m still a Marvel fanboy at heart (Excelsior!), but I liked this one more than the first AVENGERS and a lot more than the second, more than either THOR, more than the second and third IRON MAN and maybe just a smidge more than the first (though I liked that one a lot too).

Oh, and I loved the ants!

While Martin mentions he did love the movie, the Game Of Thrones writer does offer he has few issues with the Marvel movies, which is, namely, that the villains are too similar to the heroes.

…while Yellowjacket makes a decent villain here (in the comics, of course, he was actually one of Hank’s later identities, after Giant-Man and Goliath), I am tired of this Marvel movie trope where the bad guy has the same powers as the hero. The Hulk fought the Abomination, who is just a bad Hulk. Spider-Man fights Venom, who is just a bad Spider-Man. Iron Man fights Ironmonger, a bad Iron Man. Yawn. I want more films where the hero and the villain have wildly different powers. That makes the action much more interesting).

Martin also wished there was more of Wasp, but at least the good news on that front is Wasp will be a big part of an upcoming Marvel Phase 3 film.

“Ant-Man” is currently in theaters.
