The co-creator of Smallville, Alfred Gough, opens up about the talk of their being an animated sequel series to the hit show that ran for ten seasons.
While Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have said they are on board, the animated sequel doesn’t look to be happening anytime soon because of James Gunn’s DCU and the new Superman movie.

Gough Says DC Reboot Puts Smallville Revival on Hold
Gough appeared on the Talk Ville Podcast along with Rosenbaum and Welling. James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC films and TV starting in January of 2023, with Superman flying into theaters on July 11 starring new Man of Steel, David Corenswet. Gough said:
“I think the problem with most projects in in development in any studio or at any network is regime change and Warner has obviously gone through a lot. I think the fact that they’re in the process of rebooting Superman again, unfortunately, I think keeps our thing off the table for a bit.”
Worth pointing out is that under Gunn, The CW’s Superman & Lois TV series starring Tyler Hoechlin also recently ended after four seasons while the original plan was to have at least seven seasons. It does seem as if Gunn wants his Superman to be at the center of the new universe.

Gough Remains Hopeful for Smallville Animated Series
While the Smallville animated series looks to have been grounded, Gough is optimistic it will happen:
“People love you guys as Clark Kent and Lex Luther, so I do think we’ll have our time. It could come back around. Animation feels like the the best way to to do it to be honest just given the the amount of of time and the story. You can still tell story post the the series.”
How to watch
Smallville aired from 2001 to 2011. All ten seasons can be watched on MAX. DC Comics also released a tie-in Smallville Season 11 comic book about Clark as Superman.
