Scarlet Witch Not Returning for Avengers Movies, Confirms Elizabeth Olsen

The Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will be without the MCU’s most powerful character. In a new interview, Elizabeth Olsen drops the news she won’t be returning to the MCU, which means she won’t be assisting the new team of Avengers or even possibly siding with Robert Downey Jr.’s new bad guy, Doctor Doom. Those rumors a Scarlet Witch solo movie are in the works also look to be way off.

While speaking with THR, Olsen says she has moved on from Marvel and has another project lined up:

As for the future of her fan-favorite Marvel character, Olsen confirms that she’s not going to be a part of the Russo brothers’ two upcoming Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars. The back-to-back productions are gearing up to shoot in London soon, and Olsen just returned to the U.S. after wrapping Sam Esmail’s Panic Carefully in London. “I’m moving on to filming a pilot for FX [called Seven Sisters],” Olsen adds.

Why isn’t Elizabeth Olsen returning?

As for why she won’t be a part of either of the new Avengers movies, she says the MCU takes up a lot of time:

“I didn’t realize this until about six years ago, but because Marvel and its influence takes up so much physical time and space in the world, it’s really important for me to make choices outside of Marvel that reflect my own taste,” Olsen tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Your taste does create the artist that you are, and that wasn’t something I was thinking about when I first started working. So the opportunity to return to films like [The Assessment] is a reflection of the people I want to work with and my own personal taste.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a disappointment

Worth a mention is that in previous interviews, she made it sound as if her last MCU appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a big mess. The movie is also considered a major disappointment. She also said she would only return to the MCU if she had the “smartest writers to figure out how to make this all make sense.”

Release info

Avengers: Doomsday gets released on May 1, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027. The Russo brothers are returning to direct. They recently hinted the new Avengers movies reboot the MCU.
