Is Ryan Gosling Marvel’s New Black Panther?

Is Ryan Gosling Marvel’s New Black Panther?

In the just-released Marvel Knights: The World To Come Vol. 1 #1, a new white, blond Black Panther is introduced claiming to be the son of T’Challa. Naturally, fans immediately drew comparisons to Ryan Gosling, and now the speculation is in full swing.

Why the Ryan Gosling Speculation?

In the final page of the comic, the new Black Panther removes his mask and reveals himself as a white man with blue eyes and blond hair. He looks nothing like T’Challa, but he does look a lot like Ryan Gosling. The resemblance is hard to ignore, and knowing Marvel, it could be a deliberate visual tease (Marvel Comics previously changed Star-Lord into a blond, white dude in the comics to sync up with Chris Pratt in the MCU).

Post-Endgame, Marvel has been replacing a number of its original characters, race-swapping, gender-bending, and legacy-passing left and right. That sparked a long-running meme among fans: “What if Marvel race-swapped Black Panther with Ryan Gosling?” Well, now they kind of just did it in the comics.

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Gosling has been loosely attached to the MCU for years. He’s previously been rumored for roles like Ghost Rider and Nova, but nothing has ever materialized. Could that be changing?

Gosling’s Disney Connections

If Marvel Studios (and Disney) wanted to cast a high-profile actor to headline a rebooted Black Panther franchise post-Avengers: Doomsday, Gosling checks a lot of boxes. He already has deep Disney ties:

  • Recently announced as the lead in Star Wars: Starfighter for Disney
  • Formerly starred in Disney’s Remember the Titans
  • Got his start on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney Channel

So we see that Gosling is already in the Disney family.

Does Gosling Have Trump Ties?

We also previously put it forth that Marvel’s new White Black Panther could be a representation of Donald Trump. But does Ryan Gosling have any connection to Trump?

Interestingly, yes, sort of. Gosling once appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live in a parody sketch called “The Knife Guys” back in 2016, where he and Will Ferrell promoted fake Trump-branded knives as part of a gag tied to Gosling’s film The Nice Guys. Gosling even joked, “That Trump knife is huge… That’s a great knife, and I know, because I know all the great knives.”

The segment was clearly satire, but it shows Gosling has been willing to play along with Trump parody before, which may not be entirely coincidental if Marvel’s White Black Panther character is a symbolic jab at what some view as Trump-style authoritarianism.

Would Marvel Actually Do It?

Under normal circumstances, casting a white actor as Black Panther would be unthinkable. But this isn’t the original T’Challa. In the comic, the character is a supposed future son of T’Challa. However, if the MCU resets with Avengers: Doomsday, all bets are off.

Marvel has shown time and again they’re not afraid to race- or gender-swap characters for maximum shock or narrative impact. Doing the reverse here would generate massive attention and backlash (it already has). Which, frankly, is the point.

The Verdict: Meme, Troll, or Setup?

At this point, there’s no confirmation Gosling has anything to do with the character. But the comic’s art direction, Gosling’s Disney pipeline, and Marvel’s ongoing need to jolt the MCU back to life make the theory more than just a meme. Who actually thought Marvel would make a White Black Panther? Well, they did.

It could be a troll. It could be bait. Or is it that Disney and Marvel are testing the waters?
