Peter David is back, and so is X-Factor!
For those who have loved and followed David’s X-Factor since the beginning, there is a great familiarity to this first issue. Yet, at the same time, everything feels fresh and ready to begin anew.
Obviously a setup issue, this is a great place for old fans and hopefully those vaunted new readers to get into David’s particular type of storytelling. Since he is so prolific, this is one comic to get to know because you will be reading a lot of it. PAD joked that he puts out about 47 issues every year, lol.
Returning to the X-Factor fold is Lorna Dane AKA Polaris and Quicksilver, who was such a big part of PAD’s first run on the series. Of course, the star of this issue is Gambit, coming out of one of his solo series and telling the story from his own Cajun point of view.
Like Rick Remender, David knows Marvel continuity and uses it well. You feel that these are people who live lives and have a history. That has always been the difference between the Marvel Universe and everywhere else, although it is in short supply these days.
Artist Carmine Di Giandomenico does a great job capturing David’s characters, and has refreshing versions of Polaris, Quicksilver and Gambit. We even get a brief shot of one of the old X-Cell members, who apparently is going to be a part of the behind-the-scenes story.
All in all, a great first issue that I hope both old fans and new readers enjoy. Support this effort of Peter David, because he gives so much to his cast and to his readers.
