Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil reboot is moving forward, with signs pointing to Czechia as the primary filming location. A recent filing with the Czech Audiovisual Fund by local production partner Stillking Films indicates that production may begin in or around Prague later this summer.
Filming Could Start This Summer
The registration was made back in April (via The Prague Reporter), and lines up with Cregger’s earlier comments on his podcast, where he mentioned scouting “Eastern Europe” for the project. Sony has already slated the untitled Resident Evil film for a September 18, 2026 release.
As mentioned by the site, it’s worth noting that a registration with the Czech Audiovisual Fund does not confirm filming will take place there. Return to Silent Hill was initially registered but eventually shot in Germany due to incentive issues, though it’s reported that the issues have been resolved in Czechia as of this year. If anything, it at least confirms filming will start soon.

A More Faithful, Horror-Focused Adaptation
Cregger has described his take on Resident Evil as more in line with the original games, focusing on tension and psychological horror rather than zombie action. At CinemaCon, he outlined the project’s tone, referencing that signature Resident Evil moment: standing at the edge of darkness, low on ammo, with only dread ahead.
He said the film will follow a single character “from point A to point B” as they “descend deeper into hell,” promising a stripped-down, character-driven approach.
Who’s Involved
Sony’s Columbia Pictures is producing the film with Constantin Film, PlayStation Productions, and Vertigo Entertainment. Cregger is co-writing the script with Shay Hatten, who also penned John Wick: Chapter 4 and has experience filming in Prague.
Cregger’s recent success with Barbarian and the upcoming Weapons (releases August 8, 2025) has made him one of the most sought-after horror filmmakers. Sony won the bidding war for his Resident Evil pitch earlier this year.

Early Casting Details
Austin Abrams (Wolfs) is said to be attached in a lead role, with Mikey Madison (Anora) reportedly offered the female lead, though nothing official has been announced yet.
With production likely ramping up soon, expect more casting and plot details in the coming months.

What’s next for Resident Evil?
While we wait for the movie to start production, Friday saw the big announcement reveal of the next video game, Resident Evil: Requiem, the ninth in the franchise. The game appears to center on a new character, Grace Ashcroft, an FBI technical analyst, who is investigating a series of bizarre deaths.
