Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 5 prices in the U.S. are going up starting August 21. The move follows what the company calls a “challenging economic environment.”
New PlayStation 5 Prices
The updated recommended retail prices for consoles are, which sees an increase of $50:
- PlayStation 5 (Disc Model) – $549.99 (previous price $499)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99 ($449)
- PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99 ($699)
Accessories will keep their current prices, and Sony has not announced increases in other regions.
Sony’s Statement
Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, explained the decision on the PlayStation blog:
“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”
Industry Context
The price hike comes at a time when tariffs and broader economic factors are pressuring gaming companies. Nintendo recently raised the price of the original Switch, while Microsoft has delayed setting a price for its upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X handheld, citing similar economic concerns.

- No changes for PlayStation 5 accessories.
- No price changes announced for markets outside the U.S.
The increases officially take effect tomorrow, so buyers looking for the older prices have only hours left.
