New Waterworld Series Possible From SyFy

Kevin Costner’s 1995 flop, Waterworld, was billed as the most expensive movie of its time and barely made any money.

While movie goers weren’t too thrilled about the movie, seems the television audience that watches SyFy is — as everytime Waterworld airs it gets a huge audience (estimated at 400,000).

Back in 2009, NBC merged with Universal which saw the Sci-Fi Channel become the SyFy brand, and with that, plans for SyFy films were underway with the purpose to create low-budget sci-fi movies.

That’s where Waterworld comes in, as the series has such a cult-like following on SyFy, it could be remade into a new movie or more than likely, a new TV series.

SyFy President David Howe tells Forbes that while a Waterworld remake movie was “never really on the cards,” the potential for a series is “talked about endlessly.”

Kevin Costner’s version cost an estimated $235 million to make, obviously SyFy’s series would be a fraction of that, but it could still work on SyFy, also known for their popular low-budget Saturday Night Original Movies.
