Screenwriter Gary Whitta has completed a first draft for the 2016 Star Wars spinoff and has announced his departure in order to write the script for the Mark Millar Starlight movie.

The Hollywood trade sites are stating with Whitta leaving Star Wars, a new screenwriter should be announced soon.

Apparently after a year of working on the Star Wars spinoff script with director Gareth Edwards, Whitta has decided to move on to the Millar movie.

Both Edwards and Whitta released the following statements (via THR):

“Gary has been a wonderful, inspired contributor and I enjoyed working with him tremendously,” said Edwards. “I’m so grateful for all of his contributions. ”

The untitled Star Wars spinoff movie has a December 16, 2016 release date with the plot rumored to potentially center around the Rebellion’s theft of the Death Star plans or even a Han Solo origin movie starring Aaron Paul.

Regarding Mark Millar’s Starlight movie, it is described as “The Flash Gordon meets The Dark Knight Returns” as it “centers on a space hero who saved the universe 35 years ago but came back to Earth, where no one believed his fantastic stories. He settled down, got married, had kids and got old, but then is called back for one last adventure when his old rocket shows up.”

Batman Vs Superman Part 1 Rumored For October 2015 “Enter The Knight”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18672:]]

An interesting image has surfaced on Imgur/Reddit of what is stated to be a screenshot of the Batman Vs. Superman trailer.

It’s noted that Batman Vs. Superman will be two parts, with Part 1 “Enter The Knight” debuting October 23rd 2015 and the second part, “Dawn of Justice,” premiering in the March 25, 2016 release date.

Obviously, this could be a fake, but there was a previous rumor that Zack Snyder was filming Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League back-to-back.

Maybe Snyder was really filming two parts for Batman Vs. Superman?

The Batman Vs. Superman trailer is also rumored to be attached to WB’s premiere of Jupiter Ascending, which hits February 6th.

Is the above pic the final scene from the trailer?

The user who posted the image added:

I have an iPhone video of the teaser trailer (it has updated since, but close with most things), and no, I will never distribute it, but I will offer this screen shot.

Again, take this with a grain of salt, but WB debuting Batman Vs. Superman Part 1 on October 23rd wouldn’t be that bad of an idea as there is really no competition on that date (Jem and The Last Witch Hunter), and there is no competition for a couple of weeks following until James Bond Spectre hits on November 6th.

Update: Henry Cavill shoots down the rumor.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Good news for James Gunn and Nicole Perlman as the screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy has earned a Writers Guild Nomination Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Writer Guild Awards also credits Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning whose 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy comic book inspired both Gunn and Perlman:

Other nominees included in the category are: American SniperGone GirlThe Imitation Game and Wild.

Gunn posted the following response to the news on his Facebook:

So today I woke up to discover I was nominated, along with Nicole Perlman, for a Writer’s Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m honored and surprised by this, especially because we were the only film, of all ten films nominated for writing awards, that did not send a screener to Guild members, and did not spend money on any kind of push. Pretty damn cool. I know some of my fellow Writers’ Guild members follow me here, so thanks!

I also want to send out hearty congratulations to Charles Wood, our production designer, who was nominated for an Art Directors’ Guild Award for Excellence in Production Design, and Alexandra Byrne, our costume designer, who was nominated for a Costume Designer Guild Award for Excellence in a Fantasy Film. Charlie and Alex are two of my most talented GotG partners and couldn’t be more deserving of these nominations (and, truly, the awards themselves).

The winners of the Writers Guild Awards will be announced February 14th.

James Gunn is writing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 set for a May 5, 2017 release date. Nicole Perlman is writing the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora prequel comic book for Marvel Comics. Viola Davis Confirms Amanda Waller For Suicide Squad Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18394:]]

Confirming an earlier rumor, Viola Davis recently spoke about playing Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.

Viola Davis recently did some press for Blackhat where she was asked about Suicide Squad.

“Not yet,” Davis replied to Nerd Report when asked if she had started to read the Suicide Squad comic books. “I have not started reading them yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad.

“I’m fascinated by her,” Davids continued. “I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”

In the comics, Amanda Waller is the government liaison in charge of the Suicide Squad, which is a group of villains coerced into working as a team.

Viola Davis joins Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtey as playing Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Jesse Eisenberg is rumored to follow his Batman vs. Superman debut as Lex Luthor.

The Avengers 2 Footage Screens At CES

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18634:]]

In addition to The Avengers 2 promo pieces showing up at the Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Marvel Studios showed off some new footage from the movie.

According to IGN, the featurette focused on Ultron and used scenes from The Avengers 2 trailer along with comments from director Joss Whedon and some of the actors talking about the importance of Ultron as a villain.

New footage was shown including a shot of the Ultron drones bursting through walls of a train in the slow-mo Quicksilver sequence from The Avengers 2 trailer.

Another new scene took place during the villa sequence where Iron Man flies at the camera leaving Ultron drones in his wake.

A third scene showed the destruction of a Samsung building.

The featurette also showed off more Ultron concept art including Ultron in its “broken” state, and it’s said the piece suggests how advanced Ultron really gets in the movie.

Comments from Joss Whedon are said to include that that whenever he thought of the Avengers, he pictured them fighting Ultron

Whedon also stated he was responsible for getting James Spader to play Ultron as that is who he wanted for the role.

Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Paul Bettany as Vision, with James Spader as Ultron.

James Gunn Couldn’t Use Rom, Bug Or The Badoon In Guardians of the Galaxy

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18628:]]

Fans of the Abnett and Lanning Guardians of the Galaxy comic book would have loved to have seen Bug in the movie, and fans of the original characters would have loved to have seen The Badoon.

Another fan-favorite character is Rom The Spaceknight.

It turns out the three may have had a chance of appearing in the movie if only Marvel held the film rights to the characters.

Rom The Spaceknight is owned by Hasbro as is Bug, as Bug is first considered a member of the Micronauts.

The Badoon are owned by Fox as the Badoon first appeared in Silver Surfer, which Fox Studios owns the film rights to as well.

James Gunn recently spoke about the characters with Geek Nation:

There’s characters that I’ve been interested in that I’m not allowed to use but I won’t go so far as to say I definitely would have had them. There was a really good chance Bug was going to show up in the first movie but we do not own him… but, anyway, that was going to happen, perhaps. Listen, I really love Rom: Spaceknight, as everyone at Marvel knows because they’ve given me Rom stuff… but we don’t own Rom. I would love for Rom: Spaceknight to show up because I love his story, I love the way he looks, I love everything about him… There are other characters, but basically, some characters we can work around and we can use. Listen, I wanted to use the Badoon, but the Badoon we don’t own… they’re really interesting. They would be like the cannon fodder guys who were like the Sakaaran in my movie… I wrote them as Badoon but I just did a search-replace-Sakaaran when I found out we didn’t have Badoon. It was strangely late in the process when I found that out. They were designed as Badoon.
