Sony Pictures Animation has announced their upcoming animated Spider-Man feature film will have Miles Morales as Spider-Man and not Peter Parker, which fits with the recent character descriptions.
No specifics are known about the animated Spider-Man movie other than Phil Lord and Chris Miller are writing the script and producing, with The Little Prince‘s Bob Persichetti and Rise of the Guardians‘ Peter Ramsey serving as directors. Sony announced the news earlier today during a presentation (see tweets below).
The animated Spider-Man movie hits December 21, 2018.
Update: A description of the animated Spider-Man movie teaser can be found here.
It is probably safe to assume that Marvel Studios has nothing to do with the animated Spider-Man movie as they are developing the live-action Spider-Man: Homecoming movie starring Tom Holland.
In addition, Miles Morales is a Brian Michael Bendis-created character who is a part of Ike Perlmutter's Marvel Comics Creative that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige removed from have any involvement in the movies. The animated Spider-Man movie is also being developed by Amy Pascal, who is close to Perlmutter, and Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are said to be producers who are thought to hold the blame for the poor performance of the Andrew Garfield Amazing Spider-Man movies. Feige also had Arad and Tolmach removed from being involved with Spider-Man: Homecoming.
