The brilliant, hyper-obsessive-compulsive, super-computer Brainiac is combing the universe for new additions to his collection of worlds when he stumbles upon a ripe planet for his taking – Earth. But Brainiac quickly discovers Earth has a “firewall” – the Justice League. When Brainiac cleverly displaces several members of the Justice League to other time periods in Earth’s history, Batman, Flash and Cyborg must build and use the Cosmic Treadmill to race across time to retrieve their comrades – while members of the Legion of Super Heroes attempt to hold off Brainiac’s assault. Only time will tell in this battle for the fate of the Earth and the Justice League!

The cast of LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes – Justice League: Cosmic Clash features some of the top voiceover artists in the industry voicing the core Justice League heroes: Troy Baker (Batman), Nolan North (Superman), Grey Griffin (Wonder Woman), Josh Keaton (Green Lantern), Khary Payton (Cyborg) and James Arnold Taylor (The Flash). Sounds Like No Daredevil & Defenders For Avengers: Infinity War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23140:]]

Josh Brolin previously let it be known that it’s “Thanos against everyone” when it comes to The Avengers: Infinity War movies; however, that doesn’t look to include the Marvel Netflix Defenders, which consists of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.

Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War co-director Anthony Russo recently appeared at Comic-Con Experience in Brazil and offered “it’s complicated” when asked about Marvel Studios having a crossover with Marvel TV. Here’s the blurb (via Super Interessante):

It’s complicated. When we start to serialize the telling of stories it’s difficult. You have to have a lot of control and focus on the course of history. The films are controlled by a group led by Kevin Feige, so they function as a unit. Other products, even if they are from Marvel, are controlled by others. Then there is the possibility of a crossover, but it’s more complicated. It is a smaller scale version of the problem that exists when remembering that Fox holds the rights to some of Marvel’s most popular characters, as does Sony and others. As storytellers, we only have control over what happens in Marvel movies, but everything is possible, Spider-Man became possible!

The “complication” shouldn’t be too surprising as earlier it became known that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had parted ways with those who run Marvel TV, which includes Ike Perlmutter, Joe Quesada, Brian Michael Bendis and Jeph Loeb.

New Batman Vs. Superman Details Include Flash, Aquaman & Luthor

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23138:]]

Some new details about Batman Vs. Superman are learned from the Comic-Con Experience out of Brazil as costume designer Michael Wilkinson talked about Batman, Superman, Flash, Aquaman and Lex Luthor.

Ezra Miller already confirmed Flash for the movie, but now a new detail is learned in that this version of The Flash won’t be as powerful as the other Justice League members.

“He will have a small appearance and will not be as strong as the other Justice League Heroes.”

Wilkinson also offered:

“I’m not really at the liberty to talk about The Flash right now, but it’s something that you’ll be seeing in the future in our films. You do get a glimpse of him, of course, in Batman v Superman. But I’m really looking forward to taking the amazing, iconic costume for The Flash and interpreting it in a fresh way where Ezra Miller is playing The Flash. He’s an extraordinary performer, he has a sort of interesting sense of humor and the youth that will be great for Barry Allen and I think he’s going to make a great Flash.”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23139:]]

Wilkinson also teased that Jason Momoa’s Aquaman undergoes some sort of change in Batman Vs. Superman that sees him don two costumes.

“…have two uniforms in the movie. “He will start one way and will develop for a different look,” says Wilkinson.

Prior to the release of the latest Batman Vs. Superman trailer, WB revealed a scene which saw Superman as a bad guy unmasking Batman. Just as many fans online speculated, it’s a dream sequence as Wilkinson confirms it’s Batman’s nightmare. Note: The costume Batman is wearing in the scene has already been revealed to be “Nightmare Batman” as part of the action figure line, so this news shouldn’t come as all that much of a surprise.

… in Wayne’s dream, the world turned into a post-apocalyptic wasteland in the style of Mad Max, in which Superman became a despot and have an army of followers, composed of soldiers and by flying beings that appear in the trailer.

“It’s like a dream that Ben has, so we wanted to, it has almost a Mad Max quality to it where it’s like the end of the world, trying to survive and then of course Superman and his minions come, so it’s sort of a way of representing the amazing amounts of, the sort of obsessive quality that Bruce Wayne has about the threat of Superman.”

Wilkinson also confirms that Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor will be featured in other DC films, and that the look of Lex will change.

Wilkinson talked about Lex Luthor, revealing that the visual of the villain will evolve over the other films by DC.

(via Omlette translated through Bing, and Screen Rant)

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

New Batman Vs. Superman Trailer Falls Short In Viewings

While Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War trailer broke all kinds of records, WB’s second Batman Vs. Superman trailer actually sees a decline in viewings.

While it should be noted the Civil War trailer was the first for the movie, both Batman Vs. Superman full trailers together barley come near it.

Civil War netted 61 million views in its first 24 hours, with the latest Batman Vs. Superman trailer only seeing 23 million views, which is 7 million less than the first Dawn of Justice full teaser.

Variety does note this could be a natural decline, as it’s really the fourth teaser for BvS (a scene was released prior to the new trailer), but the Batman Vs. Superman trailer has been met with mixed reactions.

The trailer hasn’t been received all that favorably online – especially seeing how it seemingly reveals so much and fans aren’t happy with the look of whatever Zod becomes – as well as Eisenberg’s depiction of Luthor. It’s just never a good thing when the fan base is split in two, which is what happened with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and we all know that movie started off strong, but ended with a whimper. Say what you want about Man of Steel, but following its huge opening there was talk of a Man of Steel sequel; however, the movie petered out only bringing in $660 million — and talk of a “Superman 2” was swept under the rug in favor of adding Batman.

My two cents regarding the look of whatever Zod becomes: It looks awful. The special effects are on par with what Singer did with Apocalypse. I certainly hope this isn’t “Doomsday,” as if it is, it takes a lot away from the character. Obviously, this “Doomsday” isn’t going to kill Superman. It’s such a waste of a character. I’m guessing we’ll be hearing shortly from Snyder on the topic who will say something along the lines of, “It’s my version, dude.” I’m hoping he actually comes out and says it’s not Doomsday. Maybe Bizarro? Eh, still looks terrible, guys.

Regarding Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, it’s still a toss up for me. We do know that script was tweaked to accomodate using Jesse Eisenberg, and we can guess the original Goyer script used an older more typical comic book-inspired Lex Luthor. It’s my guess Luthor in the movie will eventually better resemble Lex we know from the comics, which will be represented by Lex losing his hair and going bald.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23125:]]

Yesterday saw the news hit that Tom Holland will be suited up as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.

Now it’s become known they are using the classic-looking Spider-Man costume.

While it’s been rumored Marvel may have gone with the red and black costume for Civil War, the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly spills the beans that it’s the classic colors, red and blue.

So it’s a surprise to see Downey on the Pinewood backlot, strolling around with his arm slung around the shoulders of a young actor by the name of Tom Holland, who just happens to be wearing an iconic red-and-blue bodysuit. You may have heard of him. He’s the new Spider-Man.

Following Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland will star in the untitled Sony Spider-Man movie due out in 2017.

“Captain America: Civil War” has  a May 6, 2016 release date directed by Anthony and Joe Russo starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, William Hurt, Martin Freeman and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Synopsis:

Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Carrie Fisher Responds To Slave Leia Complaints

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23121:]]

It’s been said that since Disney now owns the rights to Star Wars, they will not be producing any more merchandise of Slave Leia.

Recently also saw a father complain about a Star Wars Slave Leia toy — in that he didn’t know how to explain it to his daughters, which went viral.

Now word of the incident has reached Carrie Fisher who offers up her own explanations to the guy’s daughters.

Via WSJ:

There’s been some debate recently about whether there should be no more merchandise with you in the “Return of the Jedi” bikini.

I think that’s stupid.

To stop making the merchandise?

The father who flipped out about it, “What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?” Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.

And again via LA Times:

How about telling his daughter that the character is wearing that outfit not because she’s chosen to wear it. She’s been forced to wear it. She’s a prisoner of a giant testicle who has a lot of saliva going on and she does not want to wear that thing and it’s ultimately that chain, which you’re now indicating is some sort of accessory to S&M, that is used to kill the giant saliva testicle…. That’s asinine.

Movie Review: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23117:]]

A Film Review of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

I appreciate what the Hunger Games film adaptations started off doing.  They put women to the forefront of an action/adventure, special effect driven saga typically reserved for the boys club and the story unfolded in a way where themes of female empowerment did not equate to male enfeeblement, thus avoiding a battle of the sexes on the internet for every reason under the sun.  The first two films were entertaining, had interesting characters and had a few nuggets of social commentary regarding the state of the western world.  Unfortunately, Mockingjays part 1 and 2 were devoid of the energy and passion that spring boarded this franchise as they were the cinematic equivalent of gearing down so as not needing to apply the brake to the approaching intersection of completion.

As a result, I give thanks that the Hunger Games film franchise has been finally put to rest.  I am all about seeing film entertainment focused on main characters that are not exclusively white and male.  However, the way Jennifer Lawrence’s cash cow put out to pasture couldn’t have been more underwhelming, and I am legitimately vexed because despite having the budget, talent and production value to truly put this fiction on the same level as the likes of Star Wars, Avengers and Harry Potter; the opportunity was squandered.  To be clear, I am speaking only in terms of the quality of this film’s narrative and not its pocketbooks, which are certainly being stuffed with gobs of tween cash having already banked over $200 million in domestic sales in 11 days.  Even with this handsome sum (not to mention zero competition at the box office) Mockingjay Part 2 is running behind the pace of its predecessors, and I can’t help but think that more people than not were truly dissatisfied with how it all ended.  I will quote my fiancé regarding this film’s 3rd act: “The climax sucked.  I cried a little.  I got bored.  And then it was over.”

There are two other aspects of this film that kept me looking down at my watch waiting for it to end well before its 3rd act even had a chance to lay into me.  First, Katniss Everdeen stopped being an interesting character two films ago.  I totally engaged with her desperation during the first film.  I was completely in sync with her rage over being manipulated (especially at the end) of Catching Fire.  Then these Mockingjay films came along and mothballed Katniss’ mojo.  Part of the problem is that Katniss is written to never be comfortable let alone fully accepting of her role as a revolutionary icon, let alone a base participant in the overall conflict of Panem.  Only when Katniss has no home to return to does she begrudgingly accept her greater role with half-hearted enthusiasm vainly masking her only motivation: protecting her friends and family at all costs.  The blame for this offense lies at the feet of Jennifer Lawrence and director Francis Lawrence.  Where Katniss’ defiance, anger and frustration would naturally be approaching critical mass, her character is presented as a back seat driver who endures inevitable victory as if she knew all along, thus finding no real need to demonstrate passion.  Not having read the books, I cannot tell if Katniss ever drops the selfishness, indecisiveness, self-loathing and general mopey attitude, but this status quo is fully maintained in both Mockingjay films.  Hell, just looking at Jennifer Lawrence during the climactic “arrow strike” sequence couldn’t have screamed a millennial “whatever, why am I even here?” any louder even if the filmmakers tried.

The second thing that never sat well with me in this film is that although we are constantly following Katniss’ journey towards the Capitol, this adventure is actually not important to the overall plot.  Everything significant happens off camera in the hopes that the audience can simply connect the dots back to Katniss in some meaningful way.  Her journey certainly has more personal meaning by aiding her mind in choosing between Gale and Peeta, but even that element gets scuffled because she and her spec ops unit are too busy dodging death traps in areas of the capitol not on the front lines of combat?  What?  The fact that Katniss’ sham of a final mission is so resolutely inert makes perfect sense how this film ends in the very definition of “insult to injury.”

Action Style

When the cast finally gets around to opening fire and throwing a punch, it actually isn’t too bad.  I simply wished there was more of it.

4/6

Action Frame

Plenty of low and high angle dynamic shots feature a series of tracks, pulls and pans during both action and dialogue sequences.

4/5

Lead Performance

Jennifer Lawrence is still J-Law, but that’s no excuse for mailing in anything even at this point in her career.  The girl on fire has been doused!  Josh Hutcherson is credited for all the points in this category.

3/6

Supporting Performance

Donald Sutherland is great.  Julianne Moore is zzzzzz.  Liam Hemsworth has only one facial expression.  And I hope Mahershala Ali gets more roles in a leading capacity.  Nothing but love for House of Cards!  Also, I’d like more Woody Harrelson please.

3/5

Music

Passable, but not inspiring in any way.

3/6

Sound F/X

Actually quite good, especially in the sewers!

4/5

“Moving” = 21/33

Digital F/X

This entire franchise has maintained a dedicated “less is more” approach to the use of CG.  As such, the moments where spectacle and the impossible occur are much more impactful.  Still, I’d rather see a bit more.

5/6

Special F/X

Most of the CG required close coordination with the stunt and pyro teams to show the effects of an ever-changing, hostile environment on our heroes.  This was an effective partnership that obscured the lines between CG and practical effects.

4/5

Costumes

Our tributes aren’t interviewing with Stanley Tucci in this film, thus the range of spectacular design concepts are limited to the mundane.

4/6

Hair & Makeup

See above.

3/5

Exteriors

The outskirts of the capitol are as drab as the inner bunkers of District 13.

3/6

Interiors

If you are going to go dark, go all the way.  Those were some of the cleanest service tunnels and sewer systems I’ve seen from Hollywood.

2/5

“Picture” = 21/33

Hook

Being Part 2, the actual hook is carried over from Part 1 which leaves the viewer understanding that we’re still at war with the capitol and Katniss is still a propaganda proxy.

2/4

Conflict

I used to believe in Katniss’ personal anger towards President Snow two films ago.  The only real conflict is her inner struggle to choose between the hunky boy and the pretty good looking friend – which is a decision somewhat taken out of her hands.

2/4

Resolution

One of the least satisfying and surprising endings in the history of film.

1/4

Dialogue

Down to earth, intimate and not riddled with made up fictional jargon.  I just wished Katniss had something more significant to say all the time.

4/6

Exposition

There’s way too much happening off screen that Katniss has nothing to do with that forces the viewer into too many leaps of faith plot-wise.

2/5

Character Uniqueness

Nothing new is happening with Katniss as a character.  Peeta’s transformation from homicidal boyfriend back to the baker with political aspirations is quite interesting, but of course, there’s not much screen time devoted to it.

4/6

Character Relatability

After three films of Katniss being put through the ringer physically, emotionally and spiritually (and still breathing) one would think that even the most common of human beings regardless of sex, age, ethnicity or personal talent would be capable of ascending to a version of themselves that is greater than their own personal agenda.  Perhaps it is the lesson of The Hunger Games [films] that sometimes the crucible has no effect on us?

1/5

“Story” = 16/34

Overall MPS Rating: 58/100

The “girl on fire” couldn’t be further away from going out in a blaze of glory.  Mockingjay Part 2 is an adventure without energy, passion and the will to succeed which it cannot make up for with plot twists of convenience to divert the viewer’s attention.  These journeys don’t always have to end in victory, but the protagonist must have something radiating from inside that makes the hero/heroine’s path worthwhile even if an audience cannot identify or sympathize with him or her.  It is a reliable failure of Hollywood filmmaking that culminates when lackluster performance intersects unfocused direction.
