Michael Bay has teased he’s currently in Africa scouting locations for his next movie, and all signs point to his return to Transformers at Paramount.
Bay posted a video of himself hinting at his location scouting abroad, with fans quickly speculating it’s tied to the reported Transformers reboot that Deadline recently reported is one of three projects currently being reviewed by Skydance and Paramount leadership.
Bay hasn’t directed a Transformers movie since The Last Knight in 2017, but he remained attached to the franchise as a producer. Previous Reports claimed he approached Paramount about returning—possibly as both a hands-on producer and director—for a new iteration.
Paramount also recently canceled the Transformers: Earth Spark animated series, which could have been done to line up with the return of the live-action movies.
Masculine Blockbuster Era Returns?
Bay’s potential return fits perfectly with recent reporting that Paramount is pivoting back toward male-driven action franchises under its new Skydance-led direction. That pivot already includes big moves:
A new Rush Hour sequel is officially in the works, with Brett Ratner returning to direct.
Ratner, notably, also helped finance Zack Snyder’s DCEU through RatPac Entertainment, co-funding Batman v Superman and Justice League.
And just this week, chatter resurfaced that the Rush Hour revival was pushed internally at the request of Donald Trump, who reportedly favored the project.
That makes Bay’s potential Transformers return even more symbolic, as he also shares an interesting connection: he went to film school with Zack Snyder, who we have been told is bringing back the SnyderVerse.
A New Era of Blockbuster Action?
If all this plays out, Paramount may be engineering a major comeback for high-concept, testosterone-fueled action brands with names like Bay, Ratner, and even Snyder all possibly back in play.
Combined with Skydance’s IP ambitions, the pieces are lining up for a major shift in Hollywood’s post-streaming strategy.
