Actor Marc Maron, known for Netflix’s GLOW, has a role in the upcoming Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie and describes the Todd Phillips-directed flick in addition to working with the cast. The Joker movie is a standalone tale, separate from the DCEU, which Maron says is different than the Marvel approach.
“Oddly, it’s not that kind of movie. The approach that Todd Phillips has taken is more of an origin story and a character study of a mentally ill person that becomes The Joker,” he says. “It’s more of an intimate and gritty movie with a very specific scope. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it comes out.”
Maron also says that working with Robert DeNiro “was great” and revealed that Joaquin Phoenix stayed in character as the Joker while not filming.
Joker has an October 4, 2019 release date and is set in 1980s Gotham City.
The official description offers the Joker origin movie centers around the iconic arch-nemesis of Batman and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale. The film follows the transformation of a struggling stand-up comedian to a full-blown criminal force of nature.
The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, the titular character, Zazie Beetz as a single mother and the love interest of Joker, Robert DeNiro as a talk show host, Marc Maron is the agent responsible for getting the Joker on DeNiro’s talk show, with the film also starring Frances Conroy, Josh Pais and Bret Cullen as Thomas Wayne.
