Summary
- The stars of Madame Web are distancing themselves from the movie’s failure
- Sydney Sweeney took a jab at the film on SNL and also discussed it in a recent interview
- Dakota Johnson has also placed blame on studio executives for the film’s poor performance
The stars of Madame Web are distancing themselves from the Sony failure, which makes sense, and now it’s Sydney Sweeney’s turn.
In addition to taking a jab at the flick during her recent appearance on SNL where she said, “You might have seen me in Anyone but You or Euphoria… You definitely did not see me in Madame Web,” she distances herself from the flick in a recent interview.
Madame Web has made only $96 million at the box office, with both the critics and the fans despising the flick.
Sunday night at the Oscars also saw host Jimmy Kimmel crack a joke: “The people in this room somehow managed to come up with so many excellent films and memorable performances,” Kimmel said. “This night is full of enormous talent, and untold potential, but so was Madame Web.”
What did Sydney Sweeny say?
While speaking with the LA Times about her new horror film, Immaculate, she touched upon Madame Web bombing.
“I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen,” Sweeney said.
Blame the actresses?
Her statements echo the recent statements made by co-star Dakota Johnson who went so far as to blame studio execs, which has found her in the hot seat
“It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them,” she said.
Johnson added, “I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now.
Recently saw a big rumor claim that Sony and the producers behind Madame Web were angry that she threw them under the bus with insiders stating she should have taken the blame as well.
Worth a mention is that neither Dakota Johnson nor Sydney Sweeny are listed as being creatives other than actors in the movie. They’re not listed as directors, writers, or producers.
