Sydney Sweeney has taken to social media to give fans a sneak peek at her transformation into boxing legend Christy Martin.
Known for her roles in Euphoria and Madame Web, the 27-year-old actress is trading in her glam looks for the rugged life of a boxer, showing off her guns and sporting dark hair in a behind-the-scenes shot.
“Well, the cat’s out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes,” Sweeney teased in her post on Instagram. “So here’s a little BTS from my film I’m working on right now. Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. More to come soon :)”
Sydney Sweeney is no stranger to physical activity and training as she learned Taekwondo at the age of five, and she trained in mixed martial arts starting at the age of 14.
“I’m trained in mixed martial arts. I started when I was 14 and did my first competition at 18. It was a grappling competition against all guys a weight category above me and I got first place,” she previously told Maire Claire magazine.
She also previously told L’Officiel, “I really fell in love with [MMA]. It’s a really cool skill and strength and power that I hold that many people, when they look at me, they’re like, ‘Yeah right,’ and I’m like, ‘Let’s go to a ring, I’ll fight you.”
Sweeney Steps Into the Shoes of a Champion
Christy Martin, often dubbed the “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” is not only known for her triumphs in the ring but also for her resilience in overcoming personal battles. Sweeney’s role in this biopic highlights her physical transformation and dedication to portraying Martin’s strength both as a fighter and as a survivor.
Competing from 1989 to 2012, Christy Martin captured the WBC female super welterweight title in 2009. In 2016, she became the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, and in 2020, she earned a spot in the International Boxing Hall of Fame during the inaugural year that women were considered.
Fans are already excited to see Sweeney tackle the role, with many commenting on her impressive fitness regime and commitment to the part. The biopic, which delves into the life of a woman who changed the face of female boxing, is set to inspire and empower audiences worldwide. A release date hasn’t been set. David Michôd is directing.
