Following Madame Web massively bombing at the box office and with fans and critics, Dakota Johnson says she is done with comic book movies.
The flick has only made $91 million at the box office and is among the worst-rated superhero movies of all time.
Madame Web has a 12% Rotten Tomatoes score, and a 57% Audience Score; I also blasted the film in my review.
To put things in perspective, Sony’s Morbius made over $167 million, and even the worst MCU movie, The Marvels, brought in $206M.
“Decisions are being made by committees”
Regarding being done with comic book movies, Dakota Johnson goes over how she was ill during the film’s release, which certainly didn’t help things while promoting the flick, and then following the movie geetting released she said, “I was like, ‘Ugh.’ And then the movie came out and it was… Like, I can’t take any of it seriously at all. I dunno.”
She also hinted the final version of the movie may not have been what was originally intended as she implies the studio (Sony) may have messed things up (rumors have offered Spider-Man and Multiverse connections were supposed to be a part of the plot).
“It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them,” she filled in Bustle.
Executives are dummies
Dakota Johnson adds that she feels the audience is smart enough to realize what isn’t good, even though executives don’t think fans are capable.
“You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not,” she explained. “Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullshit. Even if films start to be made with AI, humans aren’t going to f-cking want to see those.”
“Probably will never do anything like it again”
Dakota Johnson continues with mention she will likely never do anything like it again.
“But it was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world,” she admitted. “And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, ‘Wait, what?'”
She added, “But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”
