'Kraven' Bombing At Box Office With $11M: Sony Marvel Reboot In The Works?

Kraven is bombing big time at the box office, even worse than Madame Web if you can believe it, and now it’s said Sony may be rebooting its Marvel universe.

Thursday previews are embarrassing

It’s reported the Thursday previews are only bringing in $2 million and that it’s looking like Kraven will only open to a $12M-$13M weekend. Update: It’s lower, see below.

Madame Web actually opened on a Wednesday, Valentine’s Day, with $6 million. It was reported at the time the dad’s and boys showed up (thank you Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney). Well, neither the dads, the boys, or the girls showed up for Kraven. Madame Web went on to open to $15.3M and finish with $100M.

Friday box office is crickets

Kraven‘s first Friday is also reported to be a low $4.7M which includes the $2M from Thursday. Morbius‘ first Friday came in at $17.3M and was another bomb from Sony Marvel, opening to $39M and finishing with $167M.

Transformers One recently bombed with a $129M worldwide gross. It’s first Friday was at $9.5M. Wow.

Saturday update

Kraven brought in $3.75M on Saturday, lower than Friday; Madame Web‘s first Saturday? $6.4M. Morbius? $13.1M.

Sunday update

Sunday sees only $2.465M at the box office; Madame Web‘s first Sunday – $4.6M; Morbius – $8.5M. It’s reported Kraven will open to only $11M.

Sony rebooting Marvel?

While The Wrap said Sony is done with its Spider-Man spinoff movies and instead focusing on Spidey with Spider-Man 4, the third Spider-Verse, and Spider-Noir, both Deadline and Variety are stating that’s not the case. In Deadline‘s article where it sounds as of those involved with Marvel at Sony are in panic mode trying to convince bosses the pandemic is to blame (lol), that the World Series is to blame for Venom 3 bombing (lol), and that script changes caused Madame Web to fail (lol), the article says:

We understand the studio is taking this misfire very seriously and a reset is in store for the non Spider-Verse and non-Tom Holland Marvel properties.

In addition, the article offers something everyone has known since Venom: The Last Dance and Morbius:

“Sony has lost Marvel fans,” one razor-sharp motion picture marketing source told me recently.

Kraven box office:

Domestic (42.3%): $11,000,000

International (57.7%): $15,000,000

Worldwide: $26,000,000

Critics, fans don’t like it

The critics also haven’t been kind to Kraven as the Rotten Tomatoes score is now at 41%. The fan score is better at 81% (that Rhino scene — yikes!), not all good for a superhero movie. Speaking of, the CinemaScore is a disaster at a “C,” which is bad even for horror flicks which generally receive lower CinemaScores.
