Karl Urban Calls ‘Mortal Kombat II’ His Toughest Role

Karl Urban says playing Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II pushed him harder than any role in his career, citing the film’s intense martial arts demands and precise choreography.

Speaking with EW.com, Urban admitted he asked for a heavy-action project after finishing season 4 of The Boys, and got more than he bargained for.

“I asked for a heavy-action content movie, and for my sins, they gave me one,” Urban said. “It was the most challenging role that I’ve ever undertaken in my career.”

Why Johnny Cage Was Such a Physical Challenge

Urban explained that the difficulty wasn’t just the volume of action, but the discipline required to make Johnny Cage’s fighting style look authentic.

“The form and the style of martial arts is so specific,” Urban said. “The choreography, at times, is so definitive in its movement, and there’s a precision of execution for it to look good. It was a huge challenge.”

The sequel introduces Cage as a washed-up Hollywood action star recruited by Lord Raiden to fight for Earthrealm in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

A Rusty Fighter Meets Kitana

Director Simon McQuoid teased a major fight between Johnny Cage and Kitana, highlighting the contrast between Cage’s sloppiness and her refined control.

“He’s so rusty,” Urban said of Johnny. “He’s neglected his martial arts. He has no connectivity with what he’s supposed to be doing.”

McQuoid added that the balance was key — Johnny couldn’t be useless, but he also couldn’t look ready for combat.

“It’s his first understanding of what’s going on now,” the director explained. “Johnny needed to look like he wasn’t match fit.”
