John Mayer and director McG have officially purchased the historic property in Los Angeles formerly known as The Jim Henson Company Lot.
The site, originally built by Charlie Chaplin in 1917, will now return to its original name, Chaplin Studios, and is open for bookings across film, music, TV, and digital production.

Jim Henson Company Lot Returns to Chaplin Studios
The Jim Henson Company occupied the lot most recently, keeping its legacy of creativity alive. Now, Mayer and McG aim to continue that tradition while highlighting the property’s deep roots in Hollywood’s past. The facility still features much of Chaplin’s original design and architecture.
The studio has hosted generations of iconic work — from The Adventures of Superman and Soul Train to recordings by A&M Records and the famed “We Are the World” session inside Studio A.

Mayer and McG’s Vision
Mayer called the acquisition a way to protect and reactivate one of Hollywood’s creative landmarks. He emphasized the site’s musical importance, citing its history with A&M Records and major album recordings.
“This studio has stood at the center of Hollywood’s history for generations, and it’s a privilege to help shepherd it into its next chapter,” said Mayer. “Beyond its film legacy, the musical history here is extraordinary — from the A&M years and being home to A&M Records to landmark albums recorded on this campus to ‘We Are the World’ being captured inside Studio A. The Chaplin lot has given the world some of its most enduring art, and our goal is to honor that legacy by keeping it working, open, and accessible to the creative community.”
McG echoed that sentiment, noting the property’s cinematic past and cultural weight. “You can feel the spirit of Hollywood’s past the moment you set foot on this lot,” he said. The duo intends to maintain its working studio status, open to artists and third-party clients without restriction.
“You can feel the spirit of Hollywood’s past the moment you set foot on this lot,” said McG. “From Chaplin to Superman, to Soul Train, this place is a cornerstone of our industry’s history. John and I are committed to respecting that heritage while ensuring the studios remain a vibrant, fully operational home for filmmakers, musicians, and creators. We want artists to walk through these gates and immediately feel that spark of possibility.”

Chaplin Studios remains fully staffed and operational. Existing team members will stay on board, and the facility is accepting new bookings immediately. Services span recording sessions, film and TV shoots, live sessions, and private events.
