James Gunn Responds To Suicide Squad Casting and More Rumors

Yesterday saw James Gunn release the official cast for The Suicide Squad, but he stopped short of confirming the characters, and now again responds to rumors on Twitter.

A fan remarked that they are blown away by the cast and wondered when more information about their roles would become known.

“Some characters will get out. Some already have (although some reported on, including from reputable sources, have been very wrong). But, in all honesty, I don’t know if we’ll officially release character info for a long long while to come,” James Gunn tweeted.

So we see that James Gunn is stating that some of the roles said to be played by specific actors isn’t exactly right.

“Right now I’m simply focused on MAKING the greatest movie I can, not promoting it or sharing info about it. And working on Suicide Squad – a property I’ve loved for many, many years – is truly a dream come true,” Gunn added.

James Gunn shoots down Suicide Squad rumors

Regarding previous rumors, Gunn also recently shot down a table read and Zatanna rumor offering: “Like so many rumors, this one was false. Table read was yesterday. I was, truly, blown away by the amount of talent in the room… Holy cow. I have nothing against Zatanna, but I have no idea where some of this stuff comes from. I never even thought of including her in #TSS (nor many of the other characters I keep hearing are in the film). I can’t comment on every rumor but just know many aren’t true.”

Comic-Con insiders have also told me that the film will be told from a villain(s) perspective, and a rumored plot surfaced stating the flick is set in Panama, Amanda Waller sends the Squad there to find an Alien monster locked inside an old prison that was being used during World War 2 by the Nazis. The Monster is now being used by two evil dictators – The Mayor and The General.

Kevin Smith even recently hinted that Nathan Fillion may be playing Green Lantern in The Suicide Squad.

Here is what has been said about the cast, with the actors confirmed, but again, according to James Gunn the characters aren’t exactly correct:

Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Steve Agee (King Shark), David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), with Idris Elba, German comedian-actor Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi and Pete Davidson in unknown roles.

New and confirmed cast members include the brother of James Gunn who also starred in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Sean Gunn; WWE superstar turned actor John Cena has a role (thought to be Peacemaker); Joaquin Cosio (Rambo: Last Blood, Into the Spider-Verse, Quantum of Solace); Mayling NG (Wonder Woman); Juan Diego Botto (Instinto, Good Behavior); Storm Reid (A Wrinkle In Time), Alice Braga (We Are Who We Are, New Mutants, Elysium, I Am Legend); Tinashe Kajese (The Inspectors, Cold Case); Julio Ruiz (S.W.A.T., Preacher); girlfriend to James Gunn, Jennifer Holland, and friend to James Gunn who also starred in the Guardians of the Galaxy flicks with Michael Rooker.

The Suicide Squad gets released August 6, 2021; filming has been said to start September 23.
