James Gunn Bringing Creature Commandos, DCU To NYCC 2024

James Gunn announces he will be attending next month’s New York Comic Con and will be bringing the DCU and the Creature Commandos animated series with him on Saturday.

“10/19 at #NYCC! Join me, Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Zoe Chao, Sean Gunn, Dean Lorey and Steve Agee for the Creature Commandos panel and we’ll fill you in on all the details of our monster army and the seeds of the #DCU!” Gunn posted on social media.

The official HBO NYCC schedule can be found here.

Earlier in September, Gunn also spoke with EW.com and teased his DCU plans.

Superman is the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic,” he said. “[Creature Commandos] is a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like. There are a ton of fun references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming. So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.”

Gunn also talked about what he likes with DC being different than Marvel.

“The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman,” Gunn said “It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it.”

Gunn added, “I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos. That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.”

Creature Cmmandos premieres Dec., 5 on MAX. Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
