Director Jake Schreier has started work on Marvel’s X-Men reboot, and he says his experience on Thunderbolts gave him the right preparation.
Schreier Talks Starting on X-Men
Speaking to Empire, Schreier confirmed he’s officially working on the X-Men reboot.
“I can’t say anything about it, but we’ve started work on X-Men, and that’s obviously very, very exciting,” Schreier said.
With Marvel’s mutants expected to headline a major new era of the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, Schreier is stepping into one of the studio’s biggest projects yet.

Lessons From Thunderbolts*
Schreier explained that his first Marvel project, Thunderbolts, taught him how to balance character-driven storytelling with large-scale action.
“There are so many things that I didn’t know about before I started [Thunderbolts*],” he said. “The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes… By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.’”
That experience will directly influence his approach to X-Men, another ensemble film that will juggle multiple characters and arcs.

Where X-Men Stands
Kevin Feige has already confirmed the script is in progress, with Michael Lesslie writing.
Feige also recently teased that Marvel will cast younger, lesser-known actors to keep costs down, with an emphasis on the “next-gen” aspects of the X-Men.
Marvel has a 2027 release slot open but Variety reported the X-Men reboot won’t hit until later, likely in 2028 or beyond.
Actors and characters from the Fox Marvel movies are also confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, and X-Men ’97 Season 2 is in the works for Disney+.
