Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are officially set to return as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
The upcoming prequel film will include the two original stars (via THR), likely in a flash-forward sequence, though plot details about their appearance remain under wraps.
This marks the first time the duo has appeared in the franchise since 2015’s Mockingjay – Part 2.
Their return isn’t all that surprising, as 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, led by Rachel Zegler, failed to reignite the franchise the way the original films with Lawrence did.

About the Film
Sunrise on the Reaping centers on a young Haymitch Abernathy and the brutal 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The story takes place 24 years before Katniss’s games and explores the origins of the character first played by Woody Harrelson.
The film stars Joseph Zada as Haymitch and Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird. Francis Lawrence, who directed the last four Hunger Games films, returns to helm the project.
Release Info
Lionsgate will release The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026.
