HBO is expanding its fantasy lineup with a brand-new live-action adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, and it’s coming from none other than The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin.
Following the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, HBO has partnered with Hasbro Entertainment to develop a TV drama set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, continuing the story where the acclaimed RPG left off.
From the Mind Behind The Last of Us
Craig Mazin, who brought The Last of Us to critical acclaim on HBO, will create, write, and showrun Baldur’s Gate.
He’s also an executive producer on the project, along with Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano. Chris Perkins, a key figure at Wizards of the Coast, is on board as a consultant.
Mazin, an avid Dungeons & Dragons fan and longtime Dungeon Master, has reportedly clocked nearly 1,000 hours in Baldur’s Gate 3, even beating it on Honor Mode.
“It is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast created,” Mazin told Deadline. “I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life.”
Set After the Game, With Familiar (and New) Faces
Unlike The Last of Us, which closely followed its game source, HBO’s Baldur’s Gate series will be a narrative continuation of the events from Baldur’s Gate 3.
The show will explore the aftermath of the game’s epic storyline, introducing new characters while also revisiting powerful heroes from the original cast.
The structure is expected to follow a D&D-style journey, focusing on relatively unknown adventurers who grow in power and eventually cross paths with fan-favorite characters, now legendary within the story world.
Mazin has plans to reach out to Baldur’s Gate 3 voice actors for possible involvement in the series, similar to how actors from The Last of Us game were included in the HBO show.
Not Tied to Another Game — A Freer Story Path
Because there is no Baldur’s Gate 4 in development, Mazin has more freedom with the TV series’ direction. The show will draw primarily from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons lore rather than the original two games.
HBO and Hasbro also confirmed that Baldur’s Gate will run alongside The Forgotten Realms D&D series at Netflix, with both shows taking place in the same shared universe.
A Major Franchise Investment
Hasbro and HBO are clearly betting big on Baldur’s Gate, especially after the third game’s massive success, with 15 million players, 34 awards, and historic recognition as the first game to win all five major Game of the Year titles.
