First Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer Almost Wasn’t Released

Back in February of 2014 saw the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer released which took the universe by storm, something long time readers of Cosmic Book News recognized eons ago. Movie goers were introduced to Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and fan-favorites Rocket Racoon and Groot, all inspired by the 2008 Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Marvel Comics comic book of the same name. The trailer featured its own special James Gunn mix as “Hooked On A Feeling” hooked in a lot of new fans.

Now it’s learned Disney almost didn’t go with the first trailer (watch below).

“That trailer tested not very well. We had another trailer that was very cheesy that sold the movie as something different than what it was — that tested a little better,” Gunn told THR at the trailer release party for his new movie he wrote and produced, The Belko Experiment.

The article notes the alternate Guardians of the Galaxy trailer could have been released, but James Gunn credits Marvel and Disney’s marketing team for going with the trailer we all got to see.

“And at the end of the day, the [marketing] guys were like, ‘This is what the movie is. We are selling what the movie is. Not something else,’ ” Gunn said. “You’ve got to sell the movie for what it is, and that’s what they did. They really bought my trust with that on the first movie.”

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.
