This past Comic-Con saw Geoff Johns offer that the Green Lantern Corps movie will be a complete re-imagining featuring both Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and now he offers further details including that it wonāt be similar to the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Collider comments that Marvel had success with its space movies with Guardians of the Galaxy and that it could open the door for Green Lantern to show some cool stuff, which saw Geoff Johns offer that he both agrees and doesnāt agree, but he couldnāt go into much for fear of spoiling things.
āI agree in both a similar way and a very different way, too, because you canāt be just āitās DCās Guardians of the Galaxy,’ā Johns said. āā¦Because James Gunn did such a great job on that, but you got to look at it like⦠I donāt want to get into it, either.
Geoff Johns did discuss rebooting the characer following the 2011 Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie.
āI think you look at everything ā this is when I do comics, too ā you look at everything that worked and didnāt work, on anything,ā Johns said. āLike revamping a character, reintroducing a character, Iāve done it a lot. The creative kind of viewpoint and way into the character and rebooting and changing it and reintroducing it, is informed by everything. Itās informed by comics and both what works and what doesnāt work. I donāt wanna spoil any of the story there, but if people liked my run on Green Lantern, then hopefully theyāll like what Iām doing.ā
Johns also has some opinions on the Green Lantern movie, as he is asked about how they will be doing the suits in Green Lantern Corps, but again, he doesnāt want to go into specifics (which sounds like Johns didnāt like the approach).
āI look at what they did with those suits. Look, I have so many opinions that I wonāt say,ā Johns said in regards to the 2011 Green Lantern movie. āā¦Thatās such a down the line converastion about director and costume designer⦠You think about it, but when Iām writing the story, I am not worried about the practicality yet of the suit. In my head, a tangible suit is cooler, an enhanced tangible suit is better. But itās really going to be about where we are in the director and everything else, and thatās a question, we get a great script, and we get a great director, and they want to make the movie and then [weāll see].ā
Geoff Johns also revealed that he is currently writing the Green Lantern Corps movie and that they have to get it right to move forward.
āAnd right now, look, Iām just writing a script, and hopefully this script gets into a place where Warner Bros., and DC, Walter [Hamada] and everybody ā [once] theyāre really excited about it, when we get that right, then weāll move ahead on the project,ā Johns said. āBut we gotta get it right.ā
Geoff Johns also offers up that he canāt totally start from scratch as Green Lantern has a history in various media.
āIām taking everything into account. Thatās what you do. You are not starting from ground zero and going āIām going to tell a story about this.ā Itās connected to everything, animation and comics and zeitgeist and other movies,ā Johns said. āThere is a lot to take in and then redirect, and I am trying to do what I did on the comics in a way, do a rebirth.ā
Finally, Geoff Johns says that he is really happy to return to his role as being a writer, where he has more control.
āWhat do you do to try and reintroduce a concept and a group of characters and make it ā this applies to everything I work on ā but as a writer, and thatās what I really wanted to get back to, is being the writer, when I do my comics I feel I have more control over the minutae, because the minutae it does matter. All those little choices add up to something good or something that doesnāt work. Part of the reason I want to get back into the writing of it all is because I want to form that minutia myself.ā
