WB Insider Says DCU Lanterns Series Is 'Really Good' (Exclusive)

While we were at Comic-Con over the weekend, a Warner Bros. insider told Cosmic Book News that Lanterns, the upcoming DCU series, is “really good,” and while it starts off grounded, it eventually leans heavily into sci-fi—something that should ease concerns from fans wondering how Green Lantern fits into a more Earth-based story.

Starts Grounded, Then Goes Full Sci-Fi

I raised concerns about the show being described as “grounded” and set in the American heartland, which doesn’t line up with the Green Lanterns being cosmic space cops.

The insider acknowledged the concern but clarified the show starts grounded for setup purposes and then shifts into full sci-fi later in the season. So yes, space stuff is apparently coming.

John Stewart Is the Lead

The series has previously been described as centering on Green Lantern John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. According to the source, Stewart is indeed the main focus of the show.

Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Plays a Key Role

Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner—who also appears in Superman—has several standout scenes in Lanterns, from what we are told, and the source said his dynamic with the other Green Lanterns is one of the highlights of the series. This lines up with recent comments made by Fillion where he said his Guy Gardner drops a lot of f-bombs, which hints that possibly Lanterns will be rated mature.

Lanterns release info

Lanterns stars Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Laura Linney has been cast in a mystery role, with speculation pointing to her possibly playing Carol Ferris, also known as Star Sapphire. Kelly Macdonald plays Sheriff Kerry, who is said to be Hal Jordan’s love interest. Ulrich Thomsen takes on the role of Sinestro.

The series, which consists of eight episodes, is expected to debut in early 2026 on HBO Max, though no official release date has been announced. Damon Lindelof and Tom King are co-writing and executive producing.

The official synopsis reveals that Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and veteran Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. While grounded on Earth, the show still leans into classic Green Lantern lore, featuring rings, powers, and familiar characters. Showrunner Chris Mundy has described it as accessible for new viewers, while rewarding longtime fans. He also noted that Season 1 is a complete story, not currently tied to other DCU projects, but with the potential for future seasons.
