Production on the prequel series, Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon, begins soon as announced by WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar who also showed off the following concept art.
Following the big announcement of how WarnerMedia will release all of its movies on the HBO Max streaming service, Kilar offered about Game of Thrones:
P.S. Principal photography starts on the next Game of Thrones series, House of the Dragon, in a few months. Look out for dragons overhead!
Kilar also offered an update about the Snyder Cut offering it will get released in a few months.

Details for Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon includes that it takes place roughly 300 years before the recent series with British actor Paddy Considine playing King Viserys I Targaryen who is described as: “King Viserys Targaryen is chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings.”
It’s known House of the Dragon will tackle the “Dance of Dragons,” the Targaryen civil war that ripped apart Westeros that was referenced in the first Game of Thrones series.
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s House Targaryen chronicle Fire & Blood.
Martin serves as producer with the co-showrunners including Ryan Condal (Colony) and Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones).
Additional characters yet to be cast include:
- Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen: King Viserys’ chosen heir, a dragon rider who grew up expecting to become the first ruling Queen of Westeros
- Queen Alicent Hightower: Viserys’ ambitious second wife and Rhaenyra’s stepmother, who had children of her own with the king
- Aegon II Targaryen: Princess Rhaenyra’s younger half-brother who challenges Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne, igniting a civil war
- Prince Daemon Targaryen: Rhaenyra’s uncle, an experienced warrior
